That really depends on which side of Taiwan you live in. If you live in the 'green' south, you will meet many separatists. If you live in the 'blue' north, you will meet many pro-unification people whose parents or grandparents flee to Taiwan after Chiang's KMT lose the civil war. You say Taiwanese are not Chinese and vice versa. But I tell you I am a Liaoninger and I do see myself as being a Chinese.

Yeah, those who came with Chiang's KMT in 1949only makes up 20% of Taiwan's population. I was born and raised in Taiwan. None of my family members nor my childhood friends want unification. My ancestors came to Taiwan long before Chiang did, and many people like me see ourselves as "Taiwanese". We do not oppose the visit, but it has to be done in equal footing between Taiwan and China. When Ma Ying-jeou meets a Chinese envoy, his official title becomes "you". This was how he was addressed.

China is using agreements with Taiwan to prime for unification, something the experts agree. I don't know why they think it's going to suceed, but I think they are just naive. The CCP and KMT are just out of touch of reality of how mainstream Taiwanese think about themselves and their future. If their opinions are not respected, things will turn uqly quickly, and Ma Ying-jeou will be toasted.

Tell you the truth. There is no market for unification in Taiwan. <1/10 wants unification, and it's still declining. Roughly, 1/3 wants independence. The rest wants to maintain the current status quo, which basically means de facto independence, not unification. If you follow Taiwan's politics, unification is not even mentioned during elections, and there has not been large protest that demand unification. It's too complicated. Not sure what China can do.

When Lee Tung-hui was in power 20 years ago, Taiwan's constitution was remodified about Taiwan's territories and how it views PRC. Under Taiwan's modified constitution, the PRC is no longer an enemy and the laws that only apply during wars against the mainland were lifted. However, even though Taiwan does not see PRC as an enemy, it is not the case the other way around.

You can blame the Chinese who came to Taiwan in 1949 during the Chinese Civil War. These Chinese people "worship" Chiang Kai-shek like a god. They called him the "savior of the Chinese nation". The irony is that the "savior of the Chinese nation" stole money from China. My ancestors were not followers of Chiang nor did they came to Taiwan with him. We never like him. Discrimination? Non-Chinese, non-Chiang followers like my grandparents were discriminated by the Chinese for 50 years.

Unification is the political platform of the KMT. However, such support is very low, almost non-exist in Taiwan. Unification is more of a historical artific due to the nature of KMT history than anything else.

Yeah, migrations to Taiwan started since the beginning of the Qing dynasty. However, most of the people who migrated during the Qing dynasty are not the same people as those who came in 1949 during the Chinese civil war. They are different in term of their political views.
