Both championship teams had goalies that had been wide receivers on the football team before they did soccer as their sole sport. So the converse of your theory is good, and I would bet that goal keepers would make excellent wide receivers once they learned proper route running.

It was not invented because people weren't good enough to play soccer, it was not made to try to contest soccer, and it wasn't made so that americans could feel different and independent.
