  • Americans also thought the Opel Kadett was "OK" in the late '50s and early '60s, when a growing number of drivers were dissatisfied with the huge, strange-looking cars that Detroit was manufacturing. That was when Americans for the first time began to buy large numbers of foreign cars, mostly from Europe. Volkswagens did the best, but a lot of other cars were around for awhile before they stopped being imported.
