Anti-Communist volunteers from the peoples of Russia fought for the Spanish Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War against the communist 2nd Spanish Republic's forces. Most of them were refugees from Soviet Russia, some had fled already in 1917 from Bolshevism.

Like Stalins ambition before WW2 was only to be the despote in a huge peasant empire he did not want to get involved in the Spanish civil war in spite of many requests.

Luckily the Soviet workers unions did not wait upon Stalins decision to collect money and aid in the factories to support the Spanish republic.

When it was already too late Stalin decided to get involved. This war and WW2 forced an unwilling Stalin into modernisation of the USSR.

@envanje With all due respect, but you believe the Trotskist version of this history. The Soviet workers were forced to collect as to create an impression of spontaneous reactions. After starvation of over 12 million citizens (seven million Ukrainians in Holodomor) in mass starvation and OGPU campaigns, the Soviet workers were just slaves of the political system. The USSR and Mexico supported a genocidal Republican Spanish regime with no respect for human lives.

@envanje In my comment, I meant the White émigré and other escaped Russian Anti-Communist volunteers, e.g. from the Russian Orthodox Church Outside Russia (ROCOC) in Paris and other communities (like Holland and Berlin-Wilmersdorf). They formed pro-Monarchist Russian batallions and supported the Spanish royalist Carlist movements in their liberation battles against the totalitarian Anarchist-Communist-Socialist-­Liberal regime of the Spanish Republic in Madrid.

It was about poverty too (but the Auxilio Social of Franco until 1965 solved all poverty, far better than your Communists ever could in entire East Bloc). I know of course that Basque Christian-Democrats supported the Republicans for autonomy reasons. The Spanish Cvil War was not about Jewry, it was about revolution vs. Tradition though. The Frente Pop. was elected in fraudulent "elections"!

But from 1931-34 the left-wing ruled horribly too. The Church helped the poor, and was not rich. Were 18 year old seminarians rich?

Manuel Azaña allowed massacred and the total mass murder of Catholic clergy, of CEDA (democratic!) politicians. The Republic was a total failure by 1936, becoming a totalitarian regime of left-wing revolutionaries from different subgroups. It was a war against Religion and against the Spanish people.
