Someone hit it on the head with the (over)expansion issue, honestly around 88-89 or so when the heat/wolves/hornets/magic started is when problems started, you had to have an expansion draft and you had good players on decent teams leave and those teams, along with the new expansions do horrible for several years. Those teams started breeding one off draft pick superstars and the team concept was confusing to say the least to many guys.
As everyone who saw the 80s already knows, it was the best decade ever for the game. So many good teams and great players. From 1990 on it became pathetic poor team play.
true money changed it all, some players today get 80 million and they aint even touched a nba ball. doctor j retired and his net worth is under 9 million, jabar 18 yrs=20 million,moses 18 yrs=28 mil,lanier 14 yrs=1 mil,dominique 14 yrs 23mil,jerry west 13 yrs=90 thousand/carmelo 4 yrs=29 mil,artest 7 yrs=39 mil,arenas 7 yrs=53 mil,kobe 10 yrs 128 mil,jermaine 10 yrs 127 mil,g hill 13yrs127 mil,j howard 12 yrs 138 mil,most these playas aint do nothing for the nba. it was the old school that did
There was no typo on my part & from my point of view the game went down hill from 1990 onward. Expansion and free agency ruined it. Michael Jordan's style of play certainly didn't help. Outstanding ball movement disappeared that made the game so great in the 80s.
P.S. Officiating suddenly started deciding games. Just ask the Knicks who saw MJ shoot 28 free throws in a crucial playoff game.
No, bulls fan, from the time the 90's expansion teams came in it started to really fall in quality. Expansion teams have weakened the 3 major sports the last two decades.
I agree the 80's was the best era. However I think it had a hangover of greatness till 1995. Its still baffling to me how Pat Riley had the FastBreak Showtime Lakers then went Piston Thug Style with the Knicks and Heat.
dirty Celtics? LOL The sixers were old and tired. The 86 Celtic team was the greatest team ever. The 80's was a great basketball era. NOT like today, with a bunch of gang bangers running around. NO team ball. Just a bunch of crap. Oh, and David stern.. YOU SUCK>

well thats your opinion, i personally think nba ball was fine up until the late 90's, when the era of hip hop completely ruined pure basketball

I meant dirty as in scummy and unlikeable, although McHale and Ainge weren't exactly clean players :)
