This video is really helpful. I made these faults before, now I know how to remind myself everything Im getting into a pool. Thanks again for sharing!
@TheLeilisa Definitely! I'm 6'4 and with less power output I can swim the same pace as another swimmer that is shorter than me. You have more weight to pull but the same amount of drag if you keep your body straight, in other words, head down. Your reach is also further than the shorter guy's reach, thus more pulling and more power. If you look at the olympics, those guys are all above 6ft. The only disadvantage is in open water where the space is limited to how close the other athletes are.
You want to keep your air as long as possible in the flip turn to allow the extra bouyancy help your breakout. Exhale at the last minute just before you get your first breath. Also, efficiency is very important so practice that flip turn endlessly with a quick flip and tight streamline. And, have a coach look at your flip turn to get some feedback. Good luck.
Excellent video, very clear. Except the last tip -- dropped elbow -- its so common when energy levels drop. Any drill to practice avoiding a dropped elbow? Or is it something that you just have to train your mind for?
thank you so much for this video. I have been teaching (the little ones) for almost 5 yrs now and have just started coaching so I'm sure this will come in handy.
A friend of mine watched me while I swimmed the other day. He said, that even though I moved my arms fast, I didn't swim fast enough. Seeing this videos now I know why.. Thanks Dave Scott
Absolutely on eof my favoritest videos hehe(i made that word up i think)
The thing is I was always a convinced the the completing the extension underwater was more efficient But friend of mine who swim faster always told me to "EXTEND YOU ARM MORE "
And I think that led eventually to overextension. Its good to have an outline of what to watch out for and practice one thing at a time. Thanks a lot!!!
Keeping your head high will eventually lower your legs and Ian Thorpe has Strong Legs and he gets more propulsion by doing so. In the end it works for him!
I really cannot explain how helpful this video was! The instructions were so clear and fixed so many of the problems I have seen myself make. I really am so excited to try this out in the pool; just a big thank you for posting this!
Great video, thanks a lot. I had trouble finding an helpful video on youtube. Very simple, easy to understand tips. Won't make me a champion, but will definitely help me have a better technique.
This is the best video on swimming technique that ive seen. Been swimming this morning and could really tell the differencce, just by watching and learning from this clip. so thanks a lot, cant wait to go again.
shark fin its where you over exagerate your high elbow comming out the watter ...- when you bring your hand up you rub your hands aggainst the sides making you have a very high elbow!
Thanks Dave: that's really helpful stuff - I've been reading about improving my freestyle technique but it's hard to understand exactly what's meant - your video really makes clear a lot of common faults (and I have them all, but hopefully not for much longer)
I did all this fault when swimming. No wonder i cant swim fast. Can you point out about fault in kicking too please??

flamingxcoolxsharad 2 years ago
You train the muscles to avoid a dropped elbow, and a good training technique is with the elastic bands, half pulls with a high elbow.

Good clear advice. Thanks for condensing it and making it easy to understand. Now to try and work on each item on the list!!!

why is ian thorpes head so high then?

Keeping your head high will eventually lower your legs and Ian Thorpe has Strong Legs and he gets more propulsion by doing so. In the end it works for him!
