  • dear youtube.. spend more time with content and less with message boards.. thank you! spare the bandwidth.

  • i only knew the goldfinger punk rock cover :D

  • i was around when this was originally released(45 r.p.m no less!!) and the term gorilla as a derogatory term for blackmen was unknown,in fact i didnt know of the term my self until i watched Thriller in Manilla (Ali v Frasier) and Ali used the term to insult Joe Frasier,i think sometimes we can look to deeply at somethings.

  • Gorillas represents big ugly men of any colour

  • THIS GUY NEEDS A GIRLFRIEND

  • Joe Jackson recorded with the reggae gruop The Royal Rasses check it out for yourself .@jedistar the force is not with you

  • How a song that is supposed to bring people together causes such a debate full of hate? I don't understand.

  • Is it just me or some of the camera angles, make him look like trololo?

  • I would love to play that song on guitar hero

  • By Gorillas, I'm pretty sure what he meant was BIG, HAIR FARMIN' BURLY dudes who look like they earn a living as loggers, BY CHEWING DOWN TREES,... Then they star in "old spice" commercials! I'm sure he didn't mean blacks, Some of the most gorilla lookin' people I've seen are middle aged and of Mediterainian blood! they don't loose hair, It's just headed south! 'bout half way down the back, It gets tired and turns gray to white AND PRESTO!, One Silver back Gorilla!, But heck, they're family.

  • 8 people thought Jim'll fix it.

  • @TBBOCIChannel

Given Joe Jackson is a short and scrawny bloke, I took the gorilla reference as meaning big burly thick men - of no specific colour.

  • @domprague Joe Jackson is a very Tall {6'6"} skinny bloke you mean....

  • @evelynmh

I always heard that he was a shortarse. Well, I've learned something today. Thank you.

  • Sir Jimmy, what a guy NOW THEN NOW THEN

  • Joe Jackson: A cross between Joe Strummer of The Clash and Donald Fagen of Steely Dan. He's got that attitude going for him. You can detect it in this tune.

  • This song is about that blonde-haired fuck introducing the song

  • @dahltome lol!!

  • couldn't believe it but I actually heard this on the radio this morning on the way to work.....amazing!!!!!

  • I acutally heard this on the radio this morning on the way to work...couldn't Believe my ears....

  • Want. Want. Want to have been alive in the '70s! Damn '90s birth...

  • RIP Jimmy!

Tune. Teen Angst all over again

  • Some girls are just shit magnets !

  • A legend from my hometown! :o)

  • I do believe that Joe Jackson is Billy Crystal

  • Good tune brings back nice memories, probably be banned today though because of the PC nazis

  • @DemocracyCountsx

    What? Why?

  • @domprague "pretty girls going with gorrilla's down my street", it's about a white girl going out with a black man, this type of thing is now promoted now by the Marxists who want a one world govt with coffee coloured people.

  • @DemocracyCountsx

Always struggled to work out the words. Well, I think plenty of people besides Marxists would object to a human being being called a gorilla.

  • @DemocracyCountsx You are a twat. I'm serious. You are a MASSIVE twat. Alright then, bye, bye, see you, bye.

p.s. No, really. I think you are awful.

  • @DemocracyCountsx shut up you halfwit gorilla's has nothing to do with blacks you moron

  • @hilly1690 How utterly naive.

  • @DemocracyCountsx or in your case how utterly stupid

  • Before his time

  • The freaky guy at the beginning is Jimmy Saville a Radio DJ/TV Presenter on Top Of The Pops in the UK, who sadly died a couple of days ago R.I.P Jimmy

  • r.i p jimmy saviile he rocked good memories of top of the pop.s

  • that guy in the beginning is pretty damn freaky but i love joe he rocks

  • Grayson Perry was so good on TOTP

  • WoW!! had forgotten all about this song from high school senior year... Oh the insecurities a teenager faces :)

  • His son Michael was pretty good too.

  • Wow - Give credit where credit is due.....it's not Sugar Ray :O

  • great song from my teens

  • zzdave you talkin' bout jimmy saville? very strange freaky guy

  • Great track : great album ......

  • very perceptive and intelligent of you demongene, jedistar needs to check the story, history and explanations of the song and the lyrics. In England and Scotland, I have heard people call bigger, less beauty blessed individuals Gorillas, thats all it means, 'How could a pretty girl be with that guy" ?

  • He sounds like a racist to me. I am sure he says referring to pretty white women dating black men "Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street"

  • @jedistar He uses the term Gorilla to mean ugly men. If you equate Gorillas with black men then that says more about you....

  • @jedistar I think he meant muscular men in general, girls who would not go out with skinny guys like himself opting for somebody bigger, more alpha, more threatening looking, that's what he meant by gorillas apart from his opinion that those guys are also ugly in the face and possibly beastly by character. I'm a black woman BTW and never heard or felt that he was racist/making a racist crack whenever I heard this song close to when it first came out

  • :D

  • he was like a precursor for Morrissey wasn't he

  • no

  • Thumbs up for Jimmy Saville tho :)

  • Una de las lineas de bajo que adoro y este grande del new wave seee...

  • Haha, heard this ages ago on Something about Mary

  • @SuperMegabar wasn't this also used in Dumb and Dumber?

  • I met Joe Jackson in Philly for a book signing. He is a big big man. BTW his autobiography was excellent - pick up a copy if you have a chance!!!

  • I think its a question we all asked before!

  • So Steady as She Goes...

    (insert same base line)

  • gah.. this song is the story of my whole life.

  • There's pretty women out walking with Gorillas who got meat......From the window, I'm Staring While my pickle grows mold

  • gotta love that guitar.

  • My favorite line is "They say that looks don't count for much, if so, there goes your proof"...

  • If you listen closely you can hear the bassist missfinger the fret on the second bar of the second chorus....ah... I always wanted to write something like that but I dont know what the hell Im talking about.

  • 1979. - Man, all I can tell you is that was possibly the LAST real great year for music. Can't tell you how much fine material was released in that year.

  • @oldjizzy Interesting point, some validity there but I think that ABC album, Specials, Haircutt 100, English Beat, Madness, B52s, Adam Ant, Dexys all had some pretty good (mostly debut) albums too, but perhaps that was all before 1980 ...

  • Man I love the tone of that Bass guitar

  • 1979 - The high water mark for popular music.

  • Graham Maby best bass player ever?

  • @bodoono Can't say if he's the best ever but he's very, very good. Saw Joe Jackson a couple years ago and talked to him outside the venue. Very engaging and a nice man.

  • DID FUCKING EMO PHILLIPS GET A DYE JOB? JUST FARTED

  • She does it because she is a woman . Don't try to understand them , it'll just make your head hurt .

  • i asked this question a million times as a teenager

  • Great song, great memories... thanks.

  • sounds like steve miller at least i thought and still do...

  • Is there an intelligent guy in the UNIVERSE who hasn't sat, shaking his head and muttering these exact lines?! So many gorillas, so few girls. *siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh*

  • Rick Springfield could have did this song......OoOh, Dr. Drake..♥

  • Just heard it on the radio and had to find it on yt.

It is one of the greatest.

    Thanks for the upload!

  • It´s like he captured what all the 90's movies was about in this one song. It´s heartaching marvelous.

  • Looks a little 'Johnny Lydon-ish' at times.

  • when music was good..ty for the post!

  • Joe Jackson was so under rated it isn't even funny.

  • is she really goin out with him? ...... classic tune!! ... wish all song's were this good!! ..

  • Aweome song, great choice for the Vid Club - nice work KW

80's video club shout out - MB, KW, PS, BAAL and don't forget the CoolWhip, everythings better with a little CoooooWhip.....

  • All of his versions are great.

  • I still can't get over how this studio recording sounds like it's from a bumble gum band from the 90s.

  • hope you werent driving a car at the time!ha lol

  • The Raconteurs fully stole this song for 'steady as she goes'!!!

  • Graham Maby is a beast bassist. Joe is a poor man's Elvis Costello - I say that with high praise. He has a great talent for hooks and he mixes in humor too.

  • This song has what I call white emotion. It's not emulating black Soul, RnB or even reggae. It has a ton of emotion I can feel but the delivery is definitely white .It came out when I was 15 and experienced being cheated on for the first time.

    I love it!!

  • anyone elese freaked out by the guy at the beging?

  • @ZZDave22 . i take it you're not british. thats jimmy saville. google him. he's .... a bit of a character.

  • @ZZDave22 It's Jimmy Saville ! He did a lot pop TV shows in the UK.

  • @ZZDave22 He was a legend when I was growing the only Jimmy Saville

  • @ZZDave22 That's "Jim'll fix it" my friend ;) aka Jimmy Saville, he's a legend !

  • @ZZDave22 Hes European what do you expect they are all a lil weird =]

  • @ZZDave22 If 'beging' means 'beginning', that's Jimmy Saville OBE. Legendary English radio DJ and television presenter.

  • @ZZDave22 Yep!

  • @ZZDave22 no thats jimmy saville he is a legend

  • @ZZDave22 Jimmy Saville?

  • @ZZDave22 Nope, just freaked out by your spelling.

  • @ZZDave22 Wow - I can barely read that. Might want to work on that spelling there champ.

  • @ZZDave22 Yes, he is Jimmy Saville...honestly look him up, lives in a caravan, multi-millionaire runs marathons at 75 with a cigar...you can take the piss but he is something that makes the world better....millions to a mental hospital........weird but MARVELLOUS.

  • @fleaby glad to hear he's still alive. I was wondering if I did really see him, now I know it was him floating around san francisco about a year ago, not many people look like him in the world but I bet he now doesn't need the peroxide dye for his hair cause it's gone naturally white. He had his head blonde like that since 1967

  • @ZZDave22 no

  • @ZZDave22 You're either a Yank or very young. That's Jimmy Saville OBE, a once great stalwart of British TV and culture. Amongst other things he hosted a long running series called "Jim'll Fix It" in which he granted the wishes of, mainly, young children. I suppose the clues were all there really.

  • @ZZDave22 Yes, I am freaked out by the weirdo at the beginning/

  • @ZZDave22 its the legend that is Jimmy Saville and he is/was a bit eccentric but a genuinely nice chap.

  • @ZZDave22 beging?

  • something about mary.excellent song

  • @ 13 I was partying with Joe down that street.

  • The baseline in that tune makes it all work.

  • joe jackson sounds black?

  • agreed, ozoid.

  • Good Grief! I've never seen Joe with that much HAIR! ; -)

  • AWESOME SONG!!!

  • the thing I really respect about joe jackson is that he made his name with these guys - then he went solo, made it big, became an establishment musician, wrote film scores and did concept albums with classical musician and whatever... then 35 years later or whatever it is he comes back to the UK and goes back out on tour with this original line up. Pretty cool.

(I wonder if Paul Weller will ever read this ;-)

  • @SAHBfan Interestingly guitarist Gary Sanford wasn't invited.

  • Then ultimate playa hata anthem...

  • a timeless classic i wish i was 18 again

  • jimmy savilles a weirdo

  • Yes she is going out with HIM. Why? She was tired of you enormous nostrils .

  • everyone in this video had the raddest hair

  • Joe Jackson isn't dead.

  • the presenter is the one and only sir jimmy saville - who claims to be the first ever dj to use 2 turntables

  • Who is the presenter? He looks like an unholy fusion of Riff-Raff and the first Doctor Who!

  • lmao i was so shocked when i heard this song because it made me realize the racentours stole the bass line in "steady as she goes" i like this one much better though

  • Easily one of the best musicians of the century. Right alongside Elvis Costello, Lennon, and Billy Joel.

  • I can't believe this song was made in the 70s. It sounds really 90s IMO. The versus sound EXACTLY like it came from a Sugar Ray song, so it's no suprise they covered it.

  • Damn, i used to think this was Sugar Ray's song, never knew they were doing a cover

  • @undergroundbasement ...Just a bit of advice when it comes to music. Read the CD linear notes. You are not alone when it comes to not knowing about cover songs, not just this one, but cover songs in general. I don't know how old you are, I'm 38, and growing up when you bought a record or a CD you read the notes, we wanted to know who in the band wrote the lyrics for which song. It might be outdated, especially due to not that many true Rock bands around these days, but you knew what was what.

  • @markob200 Sorry man, I stopped reading liner notes when I stopped buying CD's and started downloading all my music off peer-to-peer programs on the web 9-10 yrs ago, and I'm 34 now, I probably won't ever have any liner notes as long as the web exists, but I know what you mean.

  • @undergroundbasement well you'll be in the clink soon. Good luck to you!

  • @plasticonofan Now that really pissed me off, I'm mad now, there's only thing that's gonna calm me down ...and that's to go download 1000 songs, ; )

  • If u truly Love music, then people's looks shouldn't matter? If looks are equally as important to you as the music, then the advertising media has officially succeeded in taking over your brain, your opinions and worse, your soul.

  • @3DSpirit you certainly speak the truth...............

  • Is she really going out with him?

Is she really going to take him home?

    Tonight?

  • why he "was" ?

  • @marvin1905 he passed away

  • @hoplite46 Joe Jackson?? No he didn't . Who r u talking about?

  • @hoplite46 Well this is news to me I read years ago he died of a heart attack or am I getting confused with Robert Palmer?? Thought they were both dead. Damm this is confusing!!!

  • What the fuck is all this shite about his looks? Shouldn't you be on the "American Icon" or whatever the fuck it's called pages?

  • geme geme hq sound with a video someone then eme fast asap chalenge with the whole song !!!!!!! please..

  • Thumbs down to the TV editing twonks who cut the last bit off.

  • "Pretty women out walking with gorillas down my street". What a killer opening line.

Great memories of a great musician.

  • Sir jimmy Saville A.K.A. Britains oldest teenager

  • I saw Joe Jackson around 1980 in the Top Rank in Cardiff on a Sunday Night. The band was superb. But unfortunately the next night I saw Slade, and that remains the best gig I've ever seen. I doff my hat to them.

  • i've been asking myself this question way too often lately

  • Who is the douchebag that introduces Joe Jackson?

  • @larry1054 that "douchebag" is Sir James {Jimmie} Wilson Vincent Savile an English dj,actor and media personality best known for his show "Jim'll Fix IT" and being the first and last presenter on "Top of the Pops"...an interesting read on Wikipedia

  • this reminds me of being eight and nine years old. Talk about flashbacks!!!

  • Now this reminds me of when I was eight, nine years old!!!! Talk about flashbacks!!!!

  • Come on gentlemen, he may not be a Brad Pitt,, a quarterback, an alpha male, a gorilla...but he sure looks decent, like some stereotypical father of some random television show. And to be honest, I think everyone recognizes himself in the song some point in his life.

So thumbs up for Joe Jackson.

  • he looks like jesse tyler ferguson from modern family.

  • How it must suck to be this talented and see the "pretty women out walking with gorillas" knowing you've got talent and sensitivity and insight that should make the wooing easy. If you could only get rid of the spots and the greasy receding hairline and the funny overbite she'd see the real you. Ah well. A great song all around!

  • @scientifico are you male? If so then why are you so interested in another mans looks.....closet homo perhaps......it's time for your nightmare to begin sonny.....oh god, am I gay???....oh god am I gay??? lmao

  • thsi song may be old but every guy has wondered what she sees in that fuck wit at some stage

  • He's a very talented songwriter but doesn't sound like a happy guy.

  • WOW!!!!!! FLASHBACK, HUH????

  • I love this song...but did Joe also realize that he's not that easy on the eyes either

  • @kookoo78

You're right, if only he were better looking, he'd have the respect we give good looking songwriters like Elvis Costello, Ric Ocasek and Lyle Lovett.

  • So true - nice irony - you're obviously not American lol cue outrage

  • talented man, felt unappreciated in the uk i read somewhere,i had a guy in my class at school in 79,double of joe jackson, met him for the first time in 20 years and said"hi joe" and he instantly turned round, lol, great artist chech out "be my number two"

  • that bass sounds nice

  • This song is so true it should be my theme song.

  • It made number 13 in the UK

  • Great Artist that's who he is. Cheers! :)

  • Hit #21 in the US (Billboard). How'd it do in the UK? God bless!

  • welcome to the late 70,s early 80,s peeps.all good stuff with no pop idiols.lmfao.enjoy this tune.

  • Did wezzer cover this?

  • @clivusx2 Not Wezzer but Sugar Ray the ones who did When It's Over

  • Jesse Tyler Ferguson from Modern Family looks just like 1979 era Joe Jackson

  • legend, underated at a time when there were many great musicians....

  • The first time I heard this song it was by Sugar Ray, I thought it was their song, I was wrong, when I did hear it by Sugar Ray I remember thinking how much it had an early 80's new wave sound to it, I should've realized it was a remake, what happened to good music like this... back when you had originality and creativity , now everything is corporate spin, production and American Idol, some of the best music came from 79-85

  • im a 15 year old guy and i love this song lol

  • @kowcow67 I'm 15, and I'm from france and I love this song too (;

  • Now then, now then - Showaddywaddy!

  • it makes me feel old!! but it is brilliant, songs arn't written like this any more, what a shame!?? great stuff.....
