Same happened with the AF flight that crashed into the Atlantic en route to Paris from Sao Paulo. It seems it is human nature to pull up rather than push down. What tragedy. May they all rest in peace.
@armchairexpertnow, exactly the same as rev4life03, and the plane did warn them, stick shaker and I'm sure some aural alarms too, it doesnt stop them doing that would be the only possible flaw in that system, but equally there may be a time where you need an abrupt nose up. But that's a WHOLE bother long argument :p
@armchairexpertnow The autopilot was programmed to stay on the ils, when the speed decreased it had to pitch up to maintain that decent rate. Add in the flaps and that just makes it worse. Also, the stick shaker activated telling the crew a stall was about to occur, the CREW pulled back and raised the flaps making it worse. Don't blame the autopilot, it was not at fault.
So what this means is that airlines need to monitor their employees sleep schedule. They also need to provide on base sleep rooms, like hospital "on-call" rooms where pilots can lay down in a bed and grab sleep when they have layovers. Oh gosh, "this is going to cost money!" you say. Well, how much does a lost plane cost?
The Autopilot was flying the plane when it allowed the airspeed to drop from 180 knots to 131 knots. Why didn't the Autopilot increase engine output and adjust pitch to avoid the deadly stall?
@armchairexpertnow The autopilot was disactivated for final approach. If the autopilot was made to turn on automatically, then if you have a malfunction autopilot system, you could end up without any possibility to flight the plane properly and crash.
@14:38 This is the dumbest statement ever made in the history of aviation investigation. If you find all four corners of the plane, nothing fell off? Bullshit. I can think of countless cases where the four corners were there yet parts of the plane fell off. The BAC 111 that had the window fly out and had the pilots hanging out the window, several incidents of engines falling off, the time the idiot baggage handlers didn't seal the cargo door, the Aloha flight that had the roof fly off...bullshit
I live in small town Australia and the regional airline here is a monopoly that pays it's pilots less than an unskilled labourer gets (it was reported in the newspaper).
Two years ago they started importing trainee pilots from India.
I have not used their services since and now have to drive six hours to Melbourne to catch planes for work and personal travel.
Really, there was no excuse to pay the first officer less than $16,000 per year to fly a plane. That's crazy. Plus, the airline should have known not to hire pilots who lived so far from the hub. This comes down to total irresponsibility of the airline itself. I know that as a result of this crash, Colgan Air faced an intense investigation into their operations and they were found extremely negligent in almost all areas. In fact, they were not concious at all to the realities of running an airli

@meangreen4321 This is a dramatisation :P And bear in mind that pilots spend a lot of time with each other so they get to know one another, and do talk to one another like they are driving a car: it was evidenced on Airline! It's not just because the female copilot is a sexy woman.
@sertox12345 I totally agree...I would be freaked out to discover a woman working in the cockpit of an airplane I was flying on...They're too social and chatty. That's why most pilots are men--they're focused on their jobs. A woman pilot would be too busy checking her makeup and hair in the cockpit mirror.
Things happen fast. like this. Think yourself having a nap at the airplane, and suddenly you've about 3seconds to react and make correct decisions.
Captain was clearly too calm and he didn't have any muscle memory for this situation. This is what happens when the planes become too idiotproof to fly it seems.
Is it possible that the 2 hours of the delay at the airport that was mention in the beginning of the show contribute for the fatigue in both pilots ? cause it wasn't mention in the ending result of the investigation
I remember Rebecca Shaw's name when it was in the news here in au. Except the article I read said the pilots had been flirting before the crash. Can never trust reporters.
I live in Buffalo and I remember this. It was big news here. Pretty terrifying for all involved. And to think you could be in your house, minding your own business and THIS could happen was shocking. But luckily I have two pilots in the family, so I know that crashes like this are extremely rare.
All pilots should practice recovering from stalls until they can do it without even thinking. That's so basic,, but maybe they were too tired to know what was going on until they messed it right up.
Total incompetence. Regardless of less pay, "i am tired" bull crap, every professional is responsible for the safety of people they are dealing with. I am sure there are 1000s of pilots flying regional airlines with heavy work load and less pay.

it is a pity to see how the pilots were treated. all pilots are trained to prevent stalls and it they enter one how to recover. it is clear that is caused from fatigue...
Ok let's think about this, a woman with an awesome responsibility, keeping herself, the captain, and 50 passengers alive, is paid $16,000 a year, which is basically below the poverty line, that is total insanity and the airline should be directly blamed for all of their deaths and the executives should face criminal liability.
How about spending some money on beds and a quiet place to rest? Far more productive than developing systems in the cockpit to keep tiered pilots awake.
whoa what a crash i feel bad for the people who were on continental connection the pilot should of turn it off like the video said he did the oposite if i was a pilot i would turn it off in memory of the people who were in continental connection
They should raise the pay scale of pilots. A person becomes a pilot after so many efforts and at the cost of a huge amount of money. It's really disgusting that they are still not paid correctly.

@Perfixionn Arm strength has very little to do with it. There have been plenty of successful female pilots, even in military aircraft, which I imagine are harder.

@RaeRae914 I am telling you it was taken out of context. That is easily done in a non-formal forum like this. Go away. I am certainly not going to argue with someone on your level beyond this, would be assinine.
@Aviationnation10 today witch is dec 21 2011,the faa put into place new rules about things like how long a pilot can fly,how much sleep they are required to have inbetween flights and so on.
@gledalac1979 what a load of crap, No amount of enjoyment makes up for having no financial stability, these pilots get payed peanuts and the fat cat owners get payed fortunes without the pilots there nothing
@gledalac1979 what the fuck is wrong with you? Money does not make you do your job badly. Sitting in the cockpit stressing about how to pay bills will make you do your job badly.
that's not even a real reason. If you are tight on money then downsize, you will see that you live just as well without 99% of the junk that you buy. People buy junk more and more just to feel good about themselves when they can just change their lifestyle and see that they don't need any of it.
@gledalac1979 See there you go assuming that im talking about living lavish. What size monitor you sitting in front of? You have a flat screen TV at home? What kind of car you have? Hey do you have to select and choose which bills to pay? STFU if you don't know the situation of the one you speak of. I don't need to live lavish. I have a 1992 Honda and my wife a 2008 Caravan. We have 3 TV's less than 30 inches and none are flat screen and can barely pay $650 rent. Lifestyle change my ass.
@gledalac1979 I hope this is just an attempt at cheap internet trolling... If not dude, there's something wrong with yr ass. A good friend of mine was trained for this very job, and we have been aviation enthusiasts since we were kids - he has recently switched gears to become a damn manager in a diner because ~it paid more~ - how f'n sad is that? The guy who makes sure your patty melt came out to your liking is paid more than the guy who holds your life in his hands. Enjoy your pre-flight meal.
You are joking, the pilots aren't even exerting themselves, they are just riding the controls , anyone but a parapelegic can do that. Pilots job is to steer control and most of it is auto pilot not to save lives, who are you trying to fool? This is why many pilots become obese by their mid career.
@gledalac1979 really? you obviously have no experience in flying any sort of aircraft do you?, most pilots actually fly visual approaches.... they all don't do isl...
also eating is essential and lifesaving, flying is not . Humans will survive without flying but not without eating and eating junkfood is not even an option for me.
Changes needed to be made but most people, including Congress, forget that both of these pilots met ATP level qualifications. The new, Congress mandated, rules for First Officers (1500 flight hours) won't fix this problem even though they forced this change because of this accident.
@LetsFlyWa I agree. Changes they should make should be finding housing for these pilots that are close to the airports they would be working at as well as increasing their pay so they can afford hotels or a small house.
@crazyrazza4evar123 no MAN !!! lol a TAXI driver. Buses get paid like a quearter by a person so umm,,,, he could buy at least 2 happy meals in one day i think :()
Sorry, I actually live -5 mi from this crash site, and RIGHT underneath the planes usual approach path into the Buffalo airport. It's in a small place called "Pendleton." Whenever I hear a plane outside the house, I *ALWAYS* look up now and try to find where it is. I know it's probably just paranoia or something, but it's kinda eye opening when a house just 5 miles down the street gets hit by a PLANE, you know?
And even *I* think you should lighten up, dude. It's just am act
I remember reading about how 'nice' and 'good' these two jokers were after the crash. Particularly on pilot forums where Renslow was called a good stick (which proved the furthest thing from the truth). Neither one of these two clowns deserved to be in the cockpit of any commercial aircraft. Pay was not the reason, lack of ability/talent/skill/etc. were the reasons.
The hiring of pilots should not be based on HR evaluation, it should be based on flying ability, pure and simple. Or this happens
Funkyllamah, I thought since you would of been at full flaps you would first have to drop the nose, gain speed and than slowly retract the flaps. This idiot first rose the nose of the aircraft, than retracted the flaps . So if I am correct the pilot had brought the aircraft into a full stall, than the aircraft began to spin and no make it worse they first offier retracted the flaps. Anything to add?
Wow, I only have 31 hours in a Cessna 172SP and I even know that if the aircraft begins to stall to give full power and lower the nose. I am no expert but why in hell did the first officer pull the or retract the flaps while trying to regain lift or get out of the stall? Since they were most likely at full flaps there would be no reason to retract the flaps. Like I said I am no pilot and this is just my 2 cents.
gee 31 hours and you dont know why he retracted flaps? if he was trying to regain lift in a stall by retracting the flaps he was trying to get more speed over the wings ffs.. You need as much speed as you can gather to regain control, you yourself had said "I even know that if the aircraft begins to stall to give full power and lower the nose." well there you go,
@intheaircop the characteristics of a tailplane stall are different than that of a normal one. The key in a tailplane stall is to get as much air flowing over the tail as possible, in order to get more air over the tail you need to retract the flaps. NASA actually did a video on tailplane icing using a Twin Otter as a test aircraft. I highly recommend that, happy landings!
it's a shame that pilots, with the responsibility of people's lives are paid very minimal wages, while idiots like Justin Bieber and other so called stars get millions of dollars... shame!
Terrible that these people lost there lives due to pilots incompetence, the aircraft was clearly going into a stall,,first course of action is to push forward on the yokes to bring the nose DOWN to regain airspeed and LIFT !! (not pull back on the yokes to pitch the nose up as the pilot did here, that would cause the aircraft to fall out of the sky as was the case.)
This is taught in flight school, why did they not obey these critical rules. I don't except fatigue as an excuse.
planes just don't stall for no reason my rc plane stall because I had the motor off and I was doing a turn and it just stall and whent in to the ground
@chemerich Rubbish. Fatigue is a very real problem, and the effects are comparable to those of heavy alcohol consumption. After driving under the influence, fatigue is the single largest cause of road accidents in the US (and the UK for that matter). It is without question something that needs regulation in the airline industry.
As a civilian pilot in training know that H.R. 5900 is going to pass, I feel quite helpless. How can non-military pilots afford such horrible paying jobs for so long with family's and still ever hope to become an airlines captan? Hopefully something out of this bill will benefit pilots as well. Hopefully.
@699backstab Even with the stickshaker and Stickpusher fighting the Captains Panic Pull, they stalled it.
Then the Embry Riddle Graduated CFI and 'rated Copilot" decided to pull the flaps up while on the stall. Incredible how they let chickens like these two be SUBpilots, ALSO CALLED PIPIPILOTS.
Most plane crashes are Pipipilot error. I dont fly with some guys due I know they will panic on an upset and stall. Seen enough of them. FAA still allows this? Or will Obama fix these crooks too.
The main factor here is that dash 8's are pigs to fly, and have really touchy stall speeds, knife edge every time, throw ice into the mix and you have a real bad groove, i still don't see why they use these planes as the " trainer " when they are really tricky aircraft, wow.
Beverly Eckert founder of Voices of September 11,a victims advocacy group was on the on that flight. She kept poking the government for making sure that those truly responsible for 9/11 was held accountable for their own actions. Also they tried to bribe her to keep quiet, but she would not be denied. 6 days after meeting Obama and other government officials in Washington? The plane she was on crashed. All I have to say is this. Electromagnetic pulse weapon.Clinton,Bush/Chaney and the rest.History!
What the hell? The airline should be paying for the hotels for the pilots that need to fly to and from places away from their bases... this is ridiculous!
Fatigue is just an excuse for incompetence and lack of training. When you learn how to detect a stall and how to recover from it, you never forget it. It's like riding a bike. When such a dramatic event happens, the pilots aren't sleepy anymore. Their adrenaline level is at its peak.

Is it asking too much for:
de-icers that eliminate all the ice from the wings, not just the leading edge?
an autopilot that maintains airworthiness and can tell pilots what they are doing wrong?
a plane that does not have skimpy wings, setting up for going beserk in a bat of an eyelash?

In the NTSB simulation based on the blackbox, the airspeed dropped from 180 knots to 131 knots while the Autopilot was ON.
A smart computer would have told the pilots that they were making a mistake in pulling the nose up.

why does the fire fighter call the neighborhood a village?
dratelectasis 4 months ago
@dratelectasis
This is a British TV Show.....neighborhoods are called villages there.
That is also why many of the measurements are in kilograms and meters instead of pounds and feet.
equarg 3 months ago in playlist Air Crash Investigation/ Air Emergency/ Mayday
@equarg Ah. That's a good point. However, it's a canadian show. And in Britain, they use pounds and feet.
dratelectasis 3 months ago
@dratelectasis
I have heard them use both metric and standard for measurements. It depends on the episode...It depends if it is Mayday or ACI.....

@gledalac1979 what the fuck is wrong with you? Money does not make you do your job badly. Sitting in the cockpit stressing about how to pay bills will make you do your job badly.

@superskullmaster
that's not even a real reason. If you are tight on money then downsize, you will see that you live just as well without 99% of the junk that you buy. People buy junk more and more just to feel good about themselves when they can just change their lifestyle and see that they don't need any of it.
gledalac1979 1 month ago

@anomalousclouds
You are joking, the pilots aren't even exerting themselves, they are just riding the controls , anyone but a parapelegic can do that. Pilots job is to steer control and most of it is auto pilot not to save lives, who are you trying to fool? This is why many pilots become obese by their mid career.
gledalac1979 1 month ago

engrtito 4 months ago
Changes needed to be made but most people, including Congress, forget that both of these pilots met ATP level qualifications. The new, Congress mandated, rules for First Officers (1500 flight hours) won't fix this problem even though they forced this change because of this accident.
LetsFlyWa 4 months ago
@LetsFlyWa I agree. Changes they should make should be finding housing for these pilots that are close to the airports they would be working at as well as increasing their pay so they can afford hotels or a small house.

It's just am act

macgeek2004 4 months ago
I remember reading about how 'nice' and 'good' these two jokers were after the crash. Particularly on pilot forums where Renslow was called a good stick (which proved the furthest thing from the truth). Neither one of these two clowns deserved to be in the cockpit of any commercial aircraft. Pay was not the reason, lack of ability/talent/skill/etc. were the reasons.
The hiring of pilots should not be based on HR evaluation, it should be based on flying ability, pure and simple. Or this happens
archer49d 5 months ago

Like I said I am no pilot and this is just my 2 cents.
intheaircop 5 months ago
@intheaircop
gee 31 hours and you dont know why he retracted flaps? if he was trying to regain lift in a stall by retracting the flaps he was trying to get more speed over the wings ffs.. You need as much speed as you can gather to regain control, you yourself had said "I even know that if the aircraft begins to stall to give full power and lower the nose." well there you go,
funkyllamah 5 months ago
@intheaircop the characteristics of a tailplane stall are different than that of a normal one. The key in a tailplane stall is to get as much air flowing over the tail as possible, in order to get more air over the tail you need to retract the flaps. NASA actually did a video on tailplane icing using a Twin Otter as a test aircraft. I highly recommend that, happy landings!

it's a shame that pilots, with the responsibility of people's lives are paid very minimal wages, while idiots like Justin Bieber and other so called stars get millions of dollars... shame!
ehabms07 5 months ago 2

choriso00 5 months ago
Terrible that these people lost there lives due to pilots incompetence, the aircraft was clearly going into a stall,,first course of action is to push forward on the yokes to bring the nose DOWN to regain airspeed and LIFT !! (not pull back on the yokes to pitch the nose up as the pilot did here, that would cause the aircraft to fall out of the sky as was the case.)
This is taught in flight school, why did they not obey these critical rules. I don't except fatigue as an excuse.

phs1df 6 months ago
@chemerich Rubbish. Fatigue is a very real problem, and the effects are comparable to those of heavy alcohol consumption. After driving under the influence, fatigue is the single largest cause of road accidents in the US (and the UK for that matter). It is without question something that needs regulation in the airline industry.

As a civilian pilot in training know that H.R. 5900 is going to pass, I feel quite helpless. How can non-military pilots afford such horrible paying jobs for so long with family's and still ever hope to become an airlines captan? Hopefully something out of this bill will benefit pilots as well. Hopefully.
ryanperrey 6 months ago
Negligent arrogant overconfident dismissive crew murdered innocent passengers. 90% of the pilots I know are exactly this type of crew.
699backstab 6 months ago
@699backstab Even with the stickshaker and Stickpusher fighting the Captains Panic Pull, they stalled it.
Then the Embry Riddle Graduated CFI and 'rated Copilot" decided to pull the flaps up while on the stall. Incredible how they let chickens like these two be SUBpilots, ALSO CALLED PIPIPILOTS.
Most plane crashes are Pipipilot error. I dont fly with some guys due I know they will panic on an upset and stall. Seen enough of them. FAA still allows this? Or will Obama fix these crooks too.
CFITOMAHAWK2 5 months ago
The main factor here is that dash 8's are pigs to fly, and have really touchy stall speeds, knife edge every time, throw ice into the mix and you have a real bad groove, i still don't see why they use these planes as the " trainer " when they are really tricky aircraft, wow.

Fatigue is just an excuse for incompetence and lack of training. When you learn how to detect a stall and how to recover from it, you never forget it. It's like riding a bike. When such a dramatic event happens, the pilots aren't sleepy anymore. Their adrenaline level is at its peak.
