Season 2 has always been my favourate. Frank Sobatka is a truly great character, and Chris Bauer was so good as him. And wearing a fat suit. I love the scene in the penultimate episode when he puts in an honest days work. And it is the season where we take joy in seeing the team being put together again. And I know he is a nasty bastard, but Spiros is so cool to watch. Thanks, fellow Wire fans.
Funnily enough, the depiction of the working class being an alienated, effectively limbo community, is pretty much parallel to the way people tend to regard this season compared to the others. The first season felt more focussed on the street "game" and how the pawns are effected by the choices of their commanders. The second is also a "game" but of a different sort - much more political, set in a different part of town, different effected people etc. Still good, but a very different feel imo.
@RevZman Yeah, probably part of my problem is no one in my family ever worked in a factory or on the docks or anything. But I gotta say... Ziggy really took season 2 out of contention for me. He's by far the most annoying character on the show, and then he goes crazy and shoots a bunch of people? Almost as ridiculous as the entire season 5 plotline.
He's annoying, definitely, but mostly he's just pathetic, and his shooting was something borne of desperation and acknowledgement of that fact. I want to hate him, but mostly I just feel bad. Anyway you're entitled to your opinion of course, I just don't think you made much of an effort to relate to Ziggy.
But then again I'm one of those people who thought season's 3 Hamsterdam was more ridiculous than season 5's serial killer plot.
dude fuck just a season.. THIS IS BY FOR from 95-2011 the MOST UNDERRATED SHOW TO HAVE BEEN ON TV(premium channl if you count it being on HBO first) :)
I've never in my life watched a TV series that I felt was greatness the 1st time i watched each season and then realize it was even greater than that when I went back and re watched it.. Keep in mind I only seen Season 4 once..but I will go back and rewatch the entire series here again soon.
@hotblooded1983 I felt what you're describing here even more with Frank.
In my opinion this is the toughest to watch season... you understand the characters but there's just no way they're gonna just walk away from all the dirt. Very strong message, most definitely.
Yes - I never noticed it before, but they repeat the instrumental and third verse. I am pretty sure it is the original recording; they just played with it to make it fit the time they needed.
Notice at 2:36 that old lady has a "For Sale" sign in her house.
Social stratification - the drug dealers, the urban underclass, the forgotten America meet with the elderly (who are in this position because of capitalism).
@MobHeataEnt Prop Joe is in the video and features alot. Cheese shows up in this season. Avon is in jail. The kids show up in season 3 and omar is in new york.
Season 2 focused on the white working class neighbourhood or white trash some would say.
Along with all the incredible parts of this show, the way everything comes full circle by the end of the season is just amazing. Just look at the shot at 00:52 , where they are putting the women in the can up as black, it's the exact same shot as from when they first went up as red but with Landsman and Rawls roles reversed. That kind of subtlety is what really sets this show apart from all the rest.
i agree but i also would say season 2 of the wire is the 2nd best season of any show in tv history once uve been thru the whole series and then give season 2 a second look. i found i appreciated it a lot more the second time watching
Ziggy was stupid and irrational, but in the end he was just a scared kid living in a scarier world.
-My god, i dont mean offense to my social justice teachers, but this show has taught me and made me think way more than any book or documentary. It goes beyond the drama, this is life.
Everyone of these actors deserves a job in a tv show that's as good as this! And us, the audience deserve them to be in a tv show as good as this, too.
This is genuinely exceptional television. 3:38 to 4:06 just sums up in under 30 seconds the crippling, devastating effect on the working class, particularly the identity of the working class man, of the loss of America's industry. Season 2 was absolutely amazing and the plight of Frank Sobotka, the representation of the dying, struggling working class, was just heartbreaing. The richest get even richer, and many who were once middle class get poorer. Those 30 seconds almost had me in tears.
very well said my friend. in my first watch i thought this was the worst season, but now after watching all the seasons multiple times i gotta say this is probably my favorite
@Eradicus ..for some reason seris 2 dosent seem to get enough credit....i dont know if its because the story was taken away from the streets etc.....but i fucking loved it.....working class dockers who dads and grandads had been dockers....now it was being ripped away from them...cant remebr his name but the clip of franks son...on the prison landing is harsh...look at how small he was..how scared he was..only gonna 1 outcome there
@Eradicus absolutely I am a teacher in detroit and people assume that season 4 was my favorite but season 2 was because the results of our education system failing to adapt to a 21 century economy are clearly presented. after bunny colvin frank was favorite wire character
@Eradicus- Couldn't have said it better. This whole montage is amazing, right down to the song. Every aspect of it is so true and shows the sad reality of society. Heartbreaking.
@Eradicus Thank you. Look no further than the comments below to see how people generally feel about season 2. But I still can't understand that attitude, because as you so eloquently summed up, it was an intimate look at the state of American industry and the working class. Honestly I feel kind of bad for people who can't see what a great season it was.
When America goes bankrupt and its infrastructure falls apart, and people ask how it happened, I'll quote Sobotka from season 2: "We used to make shit in this country ... build shit. Now we just put our hand in the next guy's pocket."
the best and most moving season is the 4th but the second is the best season standalone, the 4th needs the third season to make any kind of sense but the 2nd is just a story about the death of industrial america and how the world has turned its back on the people who built this country
Funny that the pro-Union folks view this season as some sort of tribute to the institution of organized labor when it's Simon himself, who has said repeatedly that he is not showing any support at all for Unions and that have become a shadow of their former self. Anyway, a very underrated season, IMO. Tells a wonderful story of corruption and how the urban centers of this country have completely defaulted on their social responsibilities.
Im a canadian and no expert, but I believe that this season was supposed to be taking place in the South Eastern district (that was valchecks district and his beef with frank over a church window is the launchpad for the season)
best fuckin season the greeks are fuckin bad ass mutha fuckas love em lol and ziggie is funny wen hes walking the line the look in his face like damn im fucked
Amazing montage, very well edited, towards the end you can just feel the tension rise as the images of rust and decay overwhelm Nicks thoughts. Its all over for the IBS boys
cant help but think back to the convo Nicko and his pop had in the bar were they talk about dock work. Nick asks if he misses it, and his father says "wouldnt do me no good". Def what Nic was thinking as he walked away. The situation was way out of nic's hands by that point...for his own good all he could do was walk EPIC
This is my favorite montage, so well done. The upbeat sounding musics distracts you to the point where you almost forget that just everything you are watching is completely horrible.
Yes - it is from his album "I Feel Alright." The title song is Tom Wait's "Down in the Hole." Steve sings the 5th season version. And yes, he played Waylon, Bub's NA sponso.
@Eradicus Wrong... the entire series was the best when the show did not just focus on just wire taps because that would just be insulting to the viewer.
everyone says this seasons underated which it is a bit but thats just because the other seasons are so incredible, but no one can say that this was better than any of the other seasons
I could watch this season's episodes over and over again. I really wish this show never ended. The corruption and societal ills in Baltimore are everywhere.
My opinion on this season: Absolutely fantastic, enjoyable and informative. I just think the other seasons are better. Seasons 3 and 4 of the wire everyone should watch at least once IMO, and of coarse before they watch those seasons they should watch 1 and 2
Actually, "I Feel Alright" was the title track of Steve's second album (and first rock album - the first was acoustic) after he got clean. So I always assume it refers to feeling alright sober. There is a cockiness, though, which might be attributed to early sobriety. Or maybeit is just him. He got clean in 1994, the album is 1995.

frank sabotka sorta reminded me of shakespeare's julius caesar. he was a decent man who just wanted to do what was best for his people, but just got too caught up in it. a real tragic hero
If its dirty at this level in government just guess what the top levels of government must be like (can you say USA, BRI, GER, CHI, JAP, RUS, IRN, IRQ, AFG, etc.)
You know what's funny? People do serious dirt. They sell drugs, they smuggle drugs, they do all kinds of extortion or they mame and murder, but as soon as their own get hurt or killed, they wanna question God or they want this game this dirty business to be fair. ha! Guess what fool, you shake hands with the Devil and you actually expect him to be a gentleman? ROFL!
I think that the bad part of the season was that by the end the police stuff got kinda stale. The Port stuff, by the end, became riveting. This is definetly one of my favorite seasons of the Wire.
Every season is better then the last, but no season was ever bad. It's the exact opposite. Every season was great and built upon the stories and charcters of the last
I have visited Baltimore since 1993. First time ,as a British ex-Merchant seaman, I thought my wife's cousin was exaggerating violence in some districts. I know better now but to this day she goes out without locking the front door. The contrast between life styles is amazing. I love the city, got onto the set of Homicide Life on the street.. The Wire is educational with the interaction between crime, law enforcement, dock work, politics, the press and the school system beautifully shown.
This is the anthem for anyone who needs to get wasted at the end of the week to getaway from what ever eats away at your soul. When I heard this song,It reminded me how I struggled to get to the end of the week to get wasted. I had framed this kid&as the years went by my guilt just grew. Then I would hookup with other coruptcops and we all get wasted together.
The "white corner boys" are a real part of Baltimore, Michael "Omar "K.Williams said so in a voice over in season 2, that he visited east Baltimore for work and "Their was this poor white community that really had this ghetto-culture.."
really every single fucking minute of this show is head and shoulders above anything EVER on tv, even six feet under and that was great 2, treme is getting good though. simply the best acted, produced, written, and directed series. cant wait 2 watch it all over again on the 101!!!!
You what bit I love? When Ott - the black guy whos supposed to take over the Union after Frank - tears down his election poster. The FBI comes in and says if they don't elect someone other than "Frank's people" they're shutting down the Union.
By tearing down his own poster he proves he's one of Frank's guys. It's just a great show of solidarity. Most here probably don't give a fuck...but my god, I love the union guys.
@Eradicus I agree great scene... its done so subtle that if you don't pay attention you will miss the meaning but thats what makes the wire such a great show.
Nick wiping his eyes at the end is as sad and moving as Wallace's last few moments, Michael and Dukie saying goodbye to each other, or Randy walking into the group home.
Though it isn't important, me as black person, I loved the 2nd season at most.
Season 2 brought in the smartest villain in TV History, The Greek, the best quote ever by Frank "pockets", best music sung by the fried of bubs Mr Earle, and it kinda reminds me of the classic greek tragics. A person gets insulted in some trouble until his whole life gets fucked up and he dies (RIP Frank).
All in all my favorite season, don't forget the D'angelo storyline, that was so touching.
just finished this season yesterday, and i absolutely loved it. full of twists, well-developed new characters, and showed a whole new dynamic in the drug trade and crime scene of baltimore. and this ending scene--when the images of urban decay flash by and then it cuts back to nick and zooms in--its bits like that that make this show so amazing. love the wire.
i just finished this season and i still liked season one a little more although i agree this was still a masterpiece. i hear that season 4 is the best so i have good things to look forward to
@mattmann9218 Season 4's my favourite season, actually. Season 2 is criminally underrated. It just went to show you that The Wire is not a simple cops/drug-dealers show, it's a show about society.
Ask people what their least favourite season of the Wire is. If they tell you the 2nd season, well then guys, you just don't get it. The 2nd season is absolutely the most important. If you want to learn anything about the fallacy of capitalism, the death of Industrial America, the decay of the West, the loss of working classes and everything that they stood for, then look no further than this. This is the greatest parable on television.
But hey - gangsters are shooting things, so who cares?
@Eradicus i think the fact that the season's kinda slow in the beginning; sort of reflecting the difficulties in getting the police brass to revive what will become the MCU later on; season 4's even slower to me in picking up the pace. But for me its Seasons 1,2 and 3 thats the best of the wire ;-)
brwhizz people dont know what they were talking but this was integral to the shows progoression as important as anything ever did. look what this illustrates how we can alll lose playing this game

isn't this Steve Earle singing? Later tuns up as a bubs councilor as well as doing the ol' wire song some other series?
ritualpenguin 1 year ago
@ritualpenguin
Yes - it is from his album "I Feel Alright." The title song is Tom Wait's "Down in the Hole." Steve sings the 5th season version. And yes, he played Waylon, Bub's NA sponso.

@darlincommitme great song, plus I've been looking for this particular 'end of season montage' for a while. Great piece of sound 'n' vision.

Season 1 - 3 were the best, when there was an actual Wiretap

@Eradicus
I agree with you, however I like 1-2 best.
season 4 was murky.
MrJacobfromDenmark 1 year ago
@Eradicus Wrong... the entire series was the best when the show did not just focus on just wire taps because that would just be insulting to the viewer.

A great track to finish off this season. In Steve Earle's pre smack days I suppose.
johnhenry222222 1 year ago
@johnhenry222222
Actually, "I Feel Alright" was the title track of Steve's second album (and first rock album - the first was acoustic) after he got clean. So I always assume it refers to feeling alright sober. There is a cockiness, though, which might be attributed to early sobriety. Or maybeit is just him. He got clean in 1994, the album is 1995.
darlincommitme 1 year ago
To be clear, these were the first and second after he got clean - 5th and 6th studio album overall, not counting his live album and compilations.

frank sabotka sorta reminded me of shakespeare's julius caesar. he was a decent man who just wanted to do what was best for his people, but just got too caught up in it. a real tragic hero

Jailbreak1247 1 year ago 3
i just finished this season and i still liked season one a little more although i agree this was still a masterpiece. i hear that season 4 is the best so i have good things to look forward to
mattmann9218 1 year ago
@mattmann9218 Season 4's my favourite season, actually. Season 2 is criminally underrated. It just went to show you that The Wire is not a simple cops/drug-dealers show, it's a show about society.
PentagramSchematic 1 year ago
Ask people what their least favourite season of the Wire is. If they tell you the 2nd season, well then guys, you just don't get it. The 2nd season is absolutely the most important. If you want to learn anything about the fallacy of capitalism, the death of Industrial America, the decay of the West, the loss of working classes and everything that they stood for, then look no further than this. This is the greatest parable on television.
But hey - gangsters are shooting things, so who cares?
Eradicus 1 year ago 22
@Eradicus Agreed.
PentagramSchematic 1 year ago
@Eradicus i think the fact that the season's kinda slow in the beginning; sort of reflecting the difficulties in getting the police brass to revive what will become the MCU later on; season 4's even slower to me in picking up the pace. But for me its Seasons 1,2 and 3 thats the best of the wire ;-)
woodwyrm 1 year ago
@Eradicus There ain't nearly enough shooting for people to like The Wire just for the shooting. I'm sure people have their reasons.
