  • James Jamerson on bass? Deadly stuff.

  • had my first kiss the year this came out, aahh memories!

  • THERE ARE MEME'S ARE IN THE MUSIC...WHO "WROTE" AND "APPROVED" THESE WORDS AND MESSAGES?

    REALLY ..."MY MISTAKE"...???

    M.E.

  • This is one smooth cut...would like to see a remake of this with Jay-Z and Mary or Alicia or his wife...they would kill it, either or!!!!

  • Diana Ross is a all time favorite, great songs for weddings

  • He is one of my all-time favorite artists, he left us to soon...he was a very talented guy, from what I understand he started out as a studio "sessions" drummer...

  • @blueyes816 He played drums on a lot of the early Motown recordings for the various artists on the lable, including Stevie Wonder's first album. He was also the drummer for Smokey Robinson & The Miracles when they were on tour in the early days. But before Motown he was a member of the Doo Wop group, 'Harvey Fuqua & The Moonglows'. It was Harvey who managed him and brought him to Motown. And Harvey was there to help him complete his last album, 'Midnight Love', in 1982.

  • @bolder2009 Hello bolder2009, thanks for the info on Marvin, it was very interesting. May I ask, were you associated with him, as a musician, or in some other capacity? Or are you just a huge fan like myself?

  • I started liking Marvin Gaye when I first heard "sexual healing" when I was 18, I loved that song. Little did I know about all the other greats songs he had already made, little by little, I heard them all and brought all of his albums, but this has to be my favorite out of all of his songs, I listen to it OVER AND OVER again in the car! Being white and a teenager then I didnt have a whole lot of people to talk to about his music, but it was a lot of fun hearing more and more of his older music

  • Great song. Had to look hard to find this so thanks for posting. Takes me back to childhood and summer vacation.

  • Unbeatable song, unbeatable artists; it is a winner. Thanks for this great post.

  • Good memories!!!Viajeiiiii ;-)))

  • nicey nice thanks for posting im subcribing to you.

  • I really love this version better, this version brings out the string instruments you don't hear in the original album version

  • Diana and Marvin may not have gotten along during the making of this album but their voices loved one another and blended beautifully. I did not care for her vocal pairing with Lionel Ritchie on Endless Love much preferring Diana's solo version. Of all the women Marvin teamed with Diana and Tammi Terrell were the best fit.

  • I always loved Diana's delivery of songs only the way she could do it.

  • WAS PLAYED ON WVON IN CHCAGO IN 74 I WAS IN H.S. LOVE THIS SONG

  • One of the first 45's I bought at 7-11

  • This is really it - it eclipses so many things that have since been released...

  • the 70,s was the best

  • great song from a great era in life, so much simpler then!!

  • @kcarroll64 You can say that again... mush simpler back then..

  • "My mistake " One of my old time fav's..My tenderness made you cold not sweet, cuz if a girl loves you, you only call her weak....

  • OMG! Poor Marvin. :(

  • what a great song i love it a new favorite of mine now...

  • This is my ALL-TIME FAVORITE Marvin Gaye track.

  • @OregonWolfe Its also one of mine. But he is one of those artists whose body of work is so great that I can't reduce it to one song as an all-time favourite. If push came to shove and I had to conceed to just one, it might be 'I Wish I Didn't Love You So' from 'Vulnerable', or 'Everybody Needs Love' from 'Here, My Dear', but its too hard.

  • thats music! u uv got to love it!

  • *bows* to Motown legends!!

  • When you're young and smitten, u think ur in love.....MY MISTAKE(S) X 10

  • One person made a mistake.

  • My respect to this beautiful melody. Why black people don't make good music anymore? Today's real crap to me.

  • love that harmonica!

  • Não tem pra ninguém!

  • Didn't stay on the charts . To brief for a classic.

  • A absolute favorite of mine!!!! Such talent...

  • I thought of this song last night out of the blue; hadn't remembered it for a thousand years, and did NOT remember who performed it! Remembered the lyrics but not the singers. Timeless lyric, eh: "My mistake was to love you..."

  • This goes to show...Marvin Gaye had the best voice for blending with women singers...what a gift....a talent that has never been replicated, in my view....

  • feel good miusk!!!!!!!!!

  • Listened to this as a kid. One of my all time favorites. This was when music was music.

  • Been listening to it all day!

  • @LetFreedomRing Been listening to it all life so far!

  • Love this song. The plaintive harmonica adds such a poignancy.

  • I cant stop listening to this song

  • I LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS SONG. I USE TO DO THE BUMP TO IT.

  • indeed

  • "My Mistake" - Diana Ross & Marvin Gaye" My Mistake (Was To Love You)" from 1973. The album was called "Diana And Marvin" Great Duet and a Great Song! This song was done originally by Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. Apparently no one else has done this song. For some reason, I thought another group had a version of it. My apology for my eroneous statement below. Thanks.

  • This song has been done by others, but this is an unbeatable combination. I always really, really, liked this. It came out long ago enough so that I cannot remember when it was or the first version I heard. In any event, this is a GREAT song - always loved, still do! Thank you for this post.

  • DIS IS UR SONG A. YONEMURA

  • This is just a great song by two all-time great singers. Beautiful.

  • Marvin's voice, just the coolest. Awesome.

  • Oh snap, thank you so much for posting this.

  • Marvin is the absolute smooooothest singer EVER!!!!!

  • Thanks for the memories!!!!

  • great song from a great time, thanks for posting..

  • Got the LP GREAT!

  • I lived in DC when this came out. We all use to sit in a dimly lit living room and listen to nothing but good music albums, late into the night, with incense, enhancements and refreshments for our enjoyment. Ah, the good old days. Didn't have to go into work until late morning so it was perfect.

  • @christheone8773 Oh please..stop the bull. You dont know what those two were thinking at the time of this photo shoot.

  • @gragidram and apparently YOU DO??? just thought I'd return the favor and throw a shovelful or two towards your direction!

  • @christheone8773 HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

  • This was always my favorite from the album. This alt version is superb. Who is the drummer on the track? The harmonica? It must be Stevie Wonder.

  • OMG Remember the days of 'The Centre 63'...

  • OMG - what a TERRIFIC song. This is a classic, and I am so glad I found it. I remember this very well - always loved to hear it. I thank you for putting this out for everyone to enjoy once again. Thank you so much for a great post.

  • he didn't even want to do this project but Berry Gordy persuaded him

  • @jody808 I very much understand M's reluctance. When Tammi Terrell died, M was so devastated he didn't want to record duets with anyone anymore. If I were in his shoes, I would have refused as well. They say time heals all wounds, but 14 years (1970-84) did not heal his.

  • @CCRoxtar and ALSO, Marvin was very reluctant to record with Diana, since Marvin felt that he was being ignored by Berry (as did all the other remaining Motown stars) - he was even more resentful of the fact that HER name was appearing before his, since it was always, "Marvin Gaye and....." on all of his hit duet recordings-

  • @christheone8773 I assume you know this because you were there and Mr. Gaye told you this. Throughout their careers, until his tragic and premature death, Mr. Gaye and Ms. Ross were close friends.

  • @kenhamlett1 Well, you should know what they say about "assuming" - I am only stating what I read in the biography, "Divided Soul" by David Ritz-

  • @kenhamlett1 so YOU claim!!!!

  • According to Diana Ross' unauthorized biography, "Call Her Miss Ross", the entire track was recorded separately - that is, Marvin recorded his parts one day, and Diana Ross recorded hers, the reason being that Marvin Gaye always recorded with a marijuana joint and, at the time, Ross was pregnant with her second child - She begged Berry Gordy to do something about it, but Marvin was unrelenting - but everyone was none the wiser, because it appears as though they are singing to each other-

  • @christheone8773 and of course today that is how most songs are recorded. music, backing vocals etc can be delivered digitally from anywhere in the world. i think berry and motown worked out early on that people could be touring different parts of the country and still record. they were way ahead of their time.

  • Released by Motown on January 17, 1974 and it peaked at Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March-April of that year--

  • i just discovered this song. And me and my grilfriend find it amazing.

One can complain about the internet, but musically it has turned me into an adult!

    thx for posting

  • Takes me straight back to1975 every time & the boy that broke my heart at the tender age of 17, aah the memories.

  • My mistakes was to find this tune done by two great artist

  • Beautiful song. Love the harmonica!

  • GREAT MUSIC

  • Never heard this track before, it almost had me crying alongside handclapping.

    Thanks!

  • @Greazza

I agree with you ! this song for some reason brings out a strange mix of emotions of tears and happiness with the sound of there voice together. People can say what they want about diana ross but she is truly a great singer

  • @tonecp217 There is something so sweet and magical about motown. It makes you want to immerse yourself in the magic of it. This song is so bittersweet. It sums up my emotions about Motown - the sadness I feel for the tragic end to most of the artists and the joy at listening to their great legacy of music. Thank you Marvin, Blue, Tammi, David, Eddie, Michael, Funk Bros, Levi, Mary.....................so many...............thank you.

  • 1 Fab Tune!! Thanks for uploading!

  • this is a classic tune

    rip marvin

    lovin diana

  • They both have beautiful voices!!! It's such a sad loss to know that Marvin's gone.

  • Before I heard this song on YouTube, I used to hear it a lot when I stayed with my grandparents in Louisiana.

  • I remember this great song well done by two of Motown's finest...Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye; both legends in their own right!! Happy birthday Marvin Gaye, he would have been 71 on April 2, died April 1, 1984...what a sad loss. RIP Marvin...we will always miss you and remember your music!!!

  • This is the ish anyone thats not familar with it should feel cheated i was singing it in high school and I'm only 33.
