imagine your are looking down a corridor, the texture on the floor will only have its height reduced while the texture on the walls will only have its width reduced.
the term "anisotropic" means "directionally dependent".
@matteo4m WHat are you talking about? The 7970 is the fastest single GPU on the planet by at least 20%(up to 40%) and with 200%+ increase in tessellation performance. Making the fastest graphics card in the world is hardly shooting blanks.
