they recorded Cigarettes and Valentines in 2003 and after the tapes were stolen they started to work on American Idiot which came out in 2004.

it was on the wikipedia page for cigarettes & valentines. i know that anyone can edit wikipedia & it can be a lie & stuff so i'm not a 100% sure but this song does sound like them, you can clearly hear billie's voice.

& even if they left the album behind, it doesnt mean they forgot it completely. they often play old & forgotten songs for soundchecks.

Green Day has said like in 10 different interviews that they did cigarettes and valentines and left the studio for the day and came back the next day and the mixtapes were gone. The next day Mike got to the studio early and wrote a 30 second song (nobody likes you) and then Billie and Tre added to it. They said "hey this is funny like a rock opera" then Billie's like hey this is what we should be doing. THATS how they started american idiot.

i heard rumors on the net that green day did not like the way the songs turned out and so they invented the story of the theft of the tracks, so as to increase interest in them. but this is only something i read once - i never found this source again, probably its not true, i dont believe it anyway

i dont think thats true. from what i know, the record was stolen and so they rerecorded it but the rerecorded tracks just weren't as good as the original so they scrapped it completely and started fresh and ended up with AMERICAN IDIOT. (thank god it was stolen, haha!).

im not sure about the first one, but the second one was released to the Idiot Club in 2004 via phone message, it is called What About Today (the name is normally confused with a different 1989 Demo who's name escapes me).

this almost kinda sounds disturbing, in 2 ways: 1, the quality is so bad it sounds like it must of been recorded using a microphone held up to a stereo system of some sort, and 2, the quality also makes it sound so bad, i'm waiting for a phone call telling me i'm going to die in 7 days. so these beg 1 question: where did you get this anyway?
