  • @FMdyn Wow, you really don't know what you're talking about, do you? Did you even think these (free!!!) tutorials are about techniques? And wow, you can make a cube in Cinema4D? So you can press a button? If you're so good, then post a link with a UVW unwrapped minecraft material. Else, be nice to people who try to help others... Thank you, Iceflow Studios

  • Brilliant video! Here's a tip guys, after you make the gradient, render clouds, then continue with the stained glass effect, it gives a more even colour, rather than lighter at the top and darker at the bottom :)

  • @FMdyn Yes, much easier, I always get the perfect size/angle depending on how big the image is, for example I made 3(16x16) cube sides on a 256x256 canvas, also I can customize much more freely without some pre-designed 3D cube. But yeah, stick to your noob 3D cube instead then, I really don't care.

  • @FMdyn I very well know that you can add textures to the 3D-cube but I still think its much easier to add textures to this in the way you want and if you want a perfect cube that only shows three sides like this.

  • @FMdyn Noob? Did you even read my comment? Read my comment again, and read it just as I wrote it, because that's how I ment it.

The cube that Photoshop offer you is not as customizable as this due to the "snap on" lines that was mentioned in this video. This allows you to put any texture on the box with ease, for example SMB textures or any other. You just don't seem to see the potential.

  • @FMdyn Pretty useless comment. It's not only a tutorial for Minecraft icon's but for the whole box thing.

  • You sound like Danboe

  • vanishing points should be further away. Than it looks better immediately! Looks good now though! good tutorial. ty!

  • doesnt look PERFECT but its really good that you did it from scratch

  • Nice! I think that the pixelation process will be very useful to me in the future (i'm doing art for mobile videogames with some friends)

On topic, i'm not very sure about the gradient for the green face of the cube, dunno but maybe a diamond from the center (light) to external (dark) would be more believable?

  • Where Did You Get Your Square Brushes

  • i think this would be 1000x easier in illustrator

  • Do you belive pixel mattor is better than photoshop?

  • To Howard: How come when I Ctrl+Click when I am in free transform, the corners of the texture DON'T snap into place? I even showed the guides but they don't seem to snap into place. I have to put them in the exact spot. Please help!

  • @RyanAlbaProductions Yeah, that's my problem too! :(

  • @RyanAlbaProductions Is 'snap' under the Window drop down menu checked?

  • Your voice sounds lower, Howard. o:

  • Minecraft block texture always screw me up. They just seem so .. unparallel .. or whatever.

  • God asked Howard to teach him how to use photoshop...

  • Hey Iceflows!

When I try to use the Filters for the gradient, I can't select anything in "Texture" and it's gray'd out. I have the gradient selected, and I can apply other filters to the layer, but I can't use "Texture".

Is there a way I can get the textures? Thanks!

  • @xxwafflez I found out how to do it if you still need help. Go to: Image->Mode and click on 8bits/channel. It worked for me.

  • Like a Boss

  • This is pretty cool, but MC blocks are 16x16 XD

  • It sounds really funny when you say vertical lines xD

  • do you play minecraft?

  • you are doin' a great job ;)

  • The lighting on the bottom back corners doesn't look right, but i'm sure you could fix that pretty easily

  • Nice job. Thanks for posting.

  • 6:53 "Accept the changes" - Best advice on the video

  • Wooooo New Youtube love it <3

  • you rule, I don't play minecraft, now I have an Icon laying around because you made me. lol! excellent tut, as allways.

  • awesome! you're a photoshop god!

  • couldnt this be done with more control in illustrator with live paint?

  • I'm not into Minecraft but I can and do appreciate the lesson nevertheless. I learned a couple of things. I'm always willing to watch tutorials even that don't directly pertain to my interest in the hopes of learning things I can apply to my Photoshop uses.

  • Professional, concise tutorial

  • Nice Tutorial! Never thought it is that simple :D

  • YESSSS! The Ice Guy and Minecraft together it gives me tears, its so beautiful =]

  • Just created a minecraft block in photoshop. I am now a complete nerd :3

  • absolutely the best tutorials i've seen so far. sometimes i watch your videos just for fun. :)

  • I have never really liked Minecraft, but I found that fascinating! I don't know if I will decide to try to make a Minecraft cube like you have done here, but there are many things that I can apply this knowledge to in my own Photoshop documents. Thank you!

  • Great tutorial, really professional

  • Great video guide maker\commentator. amazing quality of work.

  • amazing!! :D

  • I can't believe I'm the commentator that knows this advance -_-

  • Wow. Great tutorial.

  • How do you get a beveled edge that's shown on the final picture?

  • @spreepin Just add a light Drop Shadow to the top layer.

  • Minecraft 3d structure tutorials in the future? :D

  • Now, make the cobblestone block :P Awesome tutorial.

  • This looks better than the original Logo...? Wow

  • your tuts are clear and profi as usual / thanks for sharing...

    enjoy!

  • I looked at the end result shown at the beginning thinking can't be that difficult. But you methods shown can be used for multiple things. kudos.

  • I h8 mine craft but your tutorials are awesome :)))

  • Check out EvanEckard, he is an upcoming tutorial youtuber. Maybe you could collab with him! Excellent tutorial again!

  • Lol could you give a tutorial on minecraft creepers? I can't seem to get them down.

  • i think the top texture looks somewhat out of place.. there is too little pixels in the back half. therefor not blending nicely with the left block, but still nicely done ;)

  • That is unpredictably amazing!!!! Can you do smth more difficult??

  • square brush!!!! Jesus didn't know that they existed!! dumm me i never goggled it at least!!!!

  • what's your big project?

  • what's is Minecraft ??

  • @nonatanoftona is this your first day on the internet?

  • @loliputsIV yes :-D

can you still tell me what it is ?

  • @loliputsIV a sandbox game where you can build whatever you want and do whatever you want. Watch this and u'll see what's minecraft - /watch?v=3rhYLe4Q-IU&feature=channel_video_title

  • I've just got a Mac xD

  • @PrishtinaHack My condolences.

  • finally completed my dock iconssssssss

  • ThisssSSSsssSSS thutorial is great!

  • F**king Amazing

  • Nice. I'll remember your method on creating "pixellated textures" via mosaic filters. Smart!

  • You've got a wonderful voice for tutorials, BUT YOU MESSED UP THE SHADOW DIRECTION >.< it was perfect untiil it shattered at 7:10-7:15

  • Brilliant!

  • 3:33 = Jaw Dropped

  • If you want this to be a tiny bit more authentic set the cel size during the mosaic stage to 32 (Minecraft textures are 16x16). Also Minecraft does duplicate the same texture for each side of the block, most of the time.

  • My reaction at 3:34, HOLY FUCKING SHIT!!!

  • rly nice! thanks! =)

  • @minecraftful . I'm in the same boat

  • Thanks, you are damned awesome! :)

  • amazing!!! you re awesome :)

  • :D

  • wow, this was completely amazing...

  • can you just narrate my life.

  • Another awesome job from the photoshop guru!!

  • There's so much minecraft stuff now!

    I LOVE IT!

  • this is awesome!!!

  • lol I dont even use photoshop and I still watch ur vids

  • All of my other subs are Minecraft channels. This one confused me for a moment, then I realized. LOL

  • I would recommend changing the gradient so the top of the block doesn't look faded-

maybe making the mosaic just a standard gradient.

  • @MASTURCHEEF001 By standard, i mean without fading to the other color.

  • One of your best tutorial IMO, thank you!

  • i don't even use photoshop but i find this fascinating. Your great production quality and clear and non obtrusive voice has made me a long term subscriber. Keep up the good work brotato.

  • @sprunk1234 Thanks!

  • awesome tutorial

too bad i dont like minecraft :)

  • i always enjoy your tutorials

  • cool tuts as usual :).

  • woot minecraft :D Awesome tutorial

  • Woo! Just made it :3 Looks awesome, thanks for the great tutorial <3

  • Another win! :D

    Nice tut!

  • You're amazing.

  • great vid but i would suggest to not use a gradient, at least not such "strong" one on the top of the block as the dark side seems like a weird shadow i think... maybe just green with the two filters (what a great idea!!) would work? :3 great job anyways!

  • If you use 32 instead of 40 when pixelating, you'll get the number of pixels used in the original minecraft texture. 16, that is!

  • amazing tutorial ;-)

  • Very, very good!

  • Excellent tut...idk what that one guy is saying about your voice; it's probably the best I've heard in a tutorial of any kind. If anything, I would thank you for not blaring some irrelevant, annoying music behind you.

  • @EoCx Thank you. :)

  • Protip: Maybe put some music behind your voice. Just seems dull. very very quiet. Still love watching your videos!

  • @armyboy1207 I tried that awhile back. It was too distracting.

  • This is very nicely thought out ;D

  • @Axol Thanks!

  • Why do you make this so easy?

  • I really enjoy your art work that you do in photoshop. I wish I could even do the basic easier things with ease. I just wish you would upload more frequently. Thank you for all your videos that you have uploaded so far you are great!

  • @bfudge85 I'll be uploading more frequently soon. Currently working on something big. :)

  • @IceflowStudios i can't wait! I love to watch your videos...you are an unlimited source of inspiration! Keep it up! You make such a good job!

  • Very good tutorial, as usual :)

    keep it up!

  • Thanks for this video!

Nice to see you actually seem to enjoy playing Minecraft, too :D

Your double-filter trick should also be great when creating custom player models, i'll try that one out soon!

  • @LinkEX Definitely. Hope it works out.

  • epic stuff !! keep it up =D

  • That was amazing..

  • Thumbs up for the 301 club!!

  • Thumbs up for 0 dislikes!

  • that was awesome, but since mincraft icons are 16x16 i'm guessing you can make them in ms paint xD

  • @ovidiupatronu you can also get them at 512x512

  • for the top green layer I'd suggest dragging the gradient from top left corner to bottom right corner, that way the gradient will be straight when you mold it to the shape... just an idea.

  • that was fu2ckING amazing!

  • I'm attempting every once in a while, to make a texture pack; the way you create the "noise" is really amazing! Would you mind if I (or someone else), used it as an easy way to create a minecraft-esque texture, instead of having to handpaint every pixel?

  • @mrisump Go for it!

  • Howard...you created the minecraft logo, didnt you?

  • These tutorials always sound so proffesional, GJ.

  • @xblizkx Thanks!

  • Technically minecraft block textures are 16x16, and in that icon they were 13x13.

  • OMG HE PLAYS MINECRAFT ASWELL AHHHH I LOVE THIS GUY

  • Howard are you a minecrafteer?

  • @fivestarlesson I'm trying. I don't have much time to play, but I certainly like the concept.

  • @IceflowStudios Would you like to have a server to play on? (mine) to learn the game?

  • @fivestarlesson No thanks. :)

  • Btw. Great tutorial as always, I love it and your voice too ;-)

  • @ToReEnT Thanks! Still a little raspy. Recovering from illness.

  • Mineshop. or Photocraft if you prefer.

  • @smay96 Photocraft...I like that!

  • I just love how you explain your tutorials. Great job sir.

  • @zealWarcraftmovies Thank you!

  • Is it just me or is that cube a little off?

  • @JanEgbersNL It might be, but it's the same perspective as the original Minecraft icon. I wanted to keep it 'true' to the original.

  • @JanEgbersNL

It is optical illusion, don't care :-)

  • I was watching Minecraft vids all morning and went to the main page to try to watch something different, and look what showed up! lol

  • @SourExplosion It was meant to be. :)

  • Nice!

  • Awesome!

  • i love minecraft

  • Can you make a tutorial on making something more like this -----> /watch?v=aBkTkxKDduc pleaseeeeeeee :)

P.S. Thanks in advance even if you don't make the tutorial anyways :]

  • Sir .... you are a genius :O

  • that's amazing :o

  • ... I'm viewer 301.

  • its a bit too sold green near the edge of the the top of the cube.

  • WoOoW

  • Amazing tutorial, amazingly easy to understand.

  • The cube looks warped... I know it's perfectly built but I think skewing the bottom in might make it look better since at this angle, the bottom corners won't fall directly below the top corners like the guides force them to, in this image.

  • If you really wanted to be more accurate, you can find all of the block textures in the .minecraft folder that the game creates when you start it up, and then you won't have to make them yourself.

  • @Ashanmaril That's no fun! :)

  • @IceflowStudios True... And I guess in that case, you could just go on Google and find the logo yourself, too! XD

  • @Ashanmaril Another thing to consider, is that creating your own textures allows you to create hi-res icons. The largest I found on Google was 256. I could, if I really needed to, create this icon at 1024.

  • Minecraft!

  • Great tutorial as always! I like how you are going into more design videos rather than photo retouching.

  • Holy Cow Minecraft!

  • Best tutorial yet. Great job

  • MINECRAFT!

  • minecraft bandwagoner

  • nice!

  • This method to create a cube is just awesome :O

  • @RxZ95sssPG Hottest cube around! ;)

  • or just do a screenshot of one of them ingame and cut it out..

or even better: open the terrain.png
