can you run crysis with out unlocking the cpu cores? im building a new rig and my iss teacher told me i dont need anything higher than a dual for gameing? :)
@scottomgxD yea, I actually never unlocked my 2 extra cores because my mobo didn't support it. A 3+ghz dual core is all you should need for gaming. I feel like 4/6/8 core would be better for a program like adobe after effects. For gaming, quad core (at this point 2011), it's just not needed. Dual core is more than you should need to get and you'd be better off spending any extra money on a better graphics card. $180 gets you a graphics card that maxes out any game today (2011)
@whiteout130 You're right, the games coming out now a days are taking advantage of 2,4,6,8..etc cores. So you upgraded from a 2 core cpu to a 4 core and you saw big increase in performance? You have a nice card btw.For BF3, I would disable vsync. This is a known issue. Your card should be able to run BF3 on ultra with vsync disabled.
@whiteout130 ahh, the dreaded BSOD :( - Hopefully you have integrated graphics on your motherboard so you can debug if it's a problem with the video card. Or even test with an older pci express gpu you have lying around or something. It's probably a hardware problem though. Figuring out which piece of hardware is always fun....not... lol
@josener26 unlocking makes it into a quad core with the right motherboard you can turn it into a quad core for a dual core price I got my unlocked and overclock to 4ghz
@FarizMetal If you get the right motherboard, you can unlock up to 2 more cores. You need a motherboard with ACC to do this and an AMD SB710 or AMD SB715 southbridge. You go into the BIOS to unlock them. If your mobo supports it, simply google 'AMD Phenom II X2 555 unlock cores' and there is a tutorial for you. Basically, if you find a section in your BIOS called Advanced Clock Calibration.....All you need to do is set EC Firmware Selection to Hybrid, and ACC to Auto and that's it :)
hey which one is better amd athlon x4 640 or amd phenom x2 555?? i want to buy new processor but i don't know which one is good for gaming. pls reply.
I'm getting this CPU and will pair it with my current PNY GTS 250 1GB GDDR3. I will probably unlock the CPU into a quad core. Is the processor good for gaming? I have always been an Intel guy.
@EvasionX2 It's great for gaming. The latest CPUs from intel (i3, i5, i7) are really great, but they are expensive. Your best bang for your buck is to get the dual core AMD and unlock it to quad core. Even at dual core, it's all a gamer should need for current games.
If you get the right motherboard, you can unlock up to 2 more cores. You need a motherboard with ACC to do this and a AMD SB710 or AMD SB715 southbridge. If you need more information on this, happy to help.
It's been working great and it would leave you a PCI slot free to fill with a sound card or anything you want.
But yea, that motherboard is REALLY great for the price. onboard 5.1 sound, onboard video, dvi and vga ports, AM3, pci-e x16. 4 ram slots for the ddr2 you already have. Sounds like an awesome buy :) great job!!!
@CrazyNinjaMike I changed my mind about a week ago and purchased and now have in my possession (N82E16813131618) an Asus M4A77D because of the ACC capabilities.
@FerAG200xx I think you need your eyes checked then lol :) - Crysis is a beautiful game to play and sometimes you'll find yourself just admiring the breathtaking graphics.
@PoisonDreamz lol, it's a great game. From 2004 to 2006, my brothers and I would play on lan every few months. But FerAG200xx said that it looks like Crysis, which I'm sure he was joking haha :D
@CrazyNinjaMike Yep, nice video btw. I am going to buy that 3.2GHZ AMD Phenom II X2 555 Dual-Core processor too, but i will continue play randomly cod 1 with my little bro too XD
@FerAG200xx yep, doom 3 in ultraquality. All 4 games at the highest possible settings/resolution. I'm using a CRT monitor, so resolution was 1280x960 on all games. Anti-Aliasing is set to 0x (removes jagged edges which isn't noticeable at higher resolutions anyway). Thanks for commenting.
And for RAM. For Crysis, the max you need on windows XP is 1GB to 1.5GB and on Vista/Win7 , it is 2GB. I've only found one game actually use more than 2GB and that game is Civilization 5 (later in the game and on largest maps)
For most games, 2GB should be plenty. If you want to, max you should get is 4GB for 32-bit OS. It will show up as 3.5GB.
@dexdervinzippo Cool. The hec Orion 585w is really great for the price. That's what I have in this rig, it's running a 9800GTX+ (which is basically a GTS250) flawlessly without any problems. It can't do SLI though, but no biggie. I have a micro ATX setup anyways.

@CrazyNinjaMike I had a hard time playing BF3 on high settings with just two cores.. I didn't bother playing anything else.
my specs:
x4 555 phenom II ofc.
16gb gskill ram 1600mhz
XFX 6870
yada yada yada.
I find more recently released games use more of my PC with that being said having more cores would be a increase in proformance.,

@CrazyNinjaMike I havent checked if vsync was disabled or not- good call.
But yeah, I have seen a increase in performance with more cores. I've been BSODing lately.. :( so i havent been able to play many games.

@CrazyNinjaMike This is the motherboard I'll buy, because of the southbridge and my crazy amount of DDR2 ram I have laying around in my room.

@EvasionX2 nice motherboard :)
You have a PCI-e x1 slot. I filled mine up with this wireless card:

It's been working great and it would leave you a PCI slot free to fill with a sound card or anything you want.

i will get this CPU, it is good for gaming?
dexdervinzippo 1 year ago
@dexdervinzippo I messaged you some information on what makes a CPU great for gaming. To sum it up for other people:
1. Some games, such as Crysis, can only use 2 cores and show ZERO improvement when going to 4 cores on the same type of CPU.
You will find newer games though will use 4 cores as time passes.
2. High clockspeed is good for games. 3.2Ghz is a dream. You could probably overclock even higher.
So yep, this CPU coupled with a great graphics card (even a GTS250 1GB) would rock at games!
