  • Fantastic clip! We somehow (miraculously!) just got back 4th and 5th grade chorus (in addition to general music!) in our district!

  • Chorus was not offered for me until High School. It's a shame because singing in chorus has been the most rewarding experience in my life. :)

  • Music important in our schools? No Shite, Sherlock! 'course, I don't teach music in the schools anymore because someone else didn't think it was and I became a budget cut. Heaven forbid we'd do without, for example, a few away sports games to afford to keep our music program intact. But I still sing. Yes!

  • my choir director at my church let me into a 2nd-6th grade choir in kindergarten because I was so excited to get involved.

now in 10th grade I still help him with that choir and sing in all his others. I can never repay him for introducing me to something that is such a huge part of my life.

I think everyone should have that opportunity as a child.

  • And once again something that should be a simple nice bit of coverage gets politicized. Here's a perfectly nice piece about choirs and choruses and someone just HAS to respond with the Obama mantra. What on EARTH does "Change. Yes we can" have to do with this piece? Not one thing. Just another blind Obama follower spouting the marching orders. It makes me sick.

  • Perfect for the night of the week that "Glee" airs!

  • @POLYPHONYOFMYHEART: Somewhere Over the Rainbow is being done by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square at the LDS Conference Center in downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. I'm afraid I'm not sure about Let the River Run.

  • What choir is singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow?

  • What choir is singing Let The River Run? It's outstanding!

  • This is so true. This is my second year in my high school choir now, and I plan to continue till I graduate in 2 years. Music is so important, and I can't imagine my school without it! :)

  • As a choir and orchestra conductor, I am glad to see that CBS has decided to create such a nice documentary. Change - yes, we can!

  • ANY IDEA WHO THE FIRST FEATURED CHORUS IS WITH THE DRUMS? They are awesome!

  • @bethgrvn That group is called CONSPIRARE. They have a website. Enjoy.

  • Loved this! I have been a member of different choruses continually since I was 8 yrs old. I cannot imagine my life without music - and the special friendships I have made along the way. It's a fact, people who join together and sing are just plain happier! I hope school boards will see this video, and make their music programs a priority.

  • My mom was a church chorister all her life and got me started singing Alto at age 9. I now sing Tenor, although I'm really a Baritone. My mom passed away in April at age 74. She asked me years ago when I was a teenager to always support the church choir. Now almost 40 years later I feel both blessed and proud that I have faithly kept that promise I made to her. Before her passing, my children as a gift of love to Mom made the same life commitment to her, one I hope they will keep...

  • i started singing in kindergarten in my church's choir and continued for 9 years. i did chorus in elementary school, as well as extracurricular groups in middle school and (currently) high school. i also audition/join honors choirs outside of school and regret nothing. music is not just a beat, rhythm, or tune. it is a feeling, a thought, a dream becoming reality. there are so many things we can accomplish and it's our responsibility to make sure they go unnoticed.

  • I grew up in school choirs in the late 50's & 60's. It was a big part of my life that I'll never forget. I attend Grsce Community Church in Ca. and we have a wonderful full choir that leads us to prepare our hearts for worship and also the message from the pulpit. "Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, sing praises to His name". What a blessing choirs and coral groups are. Singing makes for a merry heart!!! Thanks for the great video.

  • After participating in an Iowa City community sing at Old Brick led by the Urban Bush Women, I told one of them, "A community that does not sing is not a community."

  • I've been in choruses and choirs since the second grade. The one year my school budget was cut and we lost music was HORRIBLE for me! I love the variety of choruses out there and encourage everyone to join if you love singing. I hope they NEVER cut these programs from schools again.

  • My son is currently on tour with a well-regarded boys' choir. He's been involved for a 1 1/2 years. It is his social life. I've seen him develop maturity and responsibility since joining. My young daughter has already declared she wants to sing when she gets old enough. Keep singing, America!

  • i agree with you joelle , music is a big part of my life . by the way its beth :)

  • i don't know what my life would be like without my choir and music...

  • This was a wonderful piece to see. Those of us in The Barbershop Harmony Society have believed this to be true for many years. It is nice to see it documented and while we wish we had the market cornered on creating good, it is actually even better to see that all choruses do their part to making this a world a little kinder and a little gentler. Keep The WHOLE WORLD singing!

  • Singing, especially a cappella choral singing, is the most natural creative expression a social group can do. They don't need mechanical devices, or fancy rooms, or computers or even books in their hands! People were born with voices, and the first thing we do at birth is...SING! (Crying is singing of sorts.) Also, we are in darkness in the womb, but can hear quite well, so music and sound are the first connection we have with the outside world.

How wonderful good choral singing is!

  • Upgrade your life; join a choir yourself, or for their sake, make certain your children are in a choir.

  • Osgood well describes the social, educational, philenthropic and, of course, the musical benefits of choral singing but he could do a whole show just on the health benefits of singing as they are many.

  • And why is choral singing so valuable? Psychologist Alfred Adler would have said it's because it build feelings of belonging and significance in a positive way. Everyone needs to feel those things, and people who do can do great things! (Can you imagine violence between two people who actually sing together?) As Lou Gottlieb of the Limeliters said, "How 'bout some community singing, what do you say?" [P.S. I so wish I could carry a tune!]

  • YES! THis needs to be sent to every elected official, school board member and school administrator in America!

  • my favorite part is when he says, "cut somewhere else." i also love the loud, exuberant children's choirs!
