I had never heard the Connie Francis version until I heard everyone raving about it. Yes, its excellent. However, Frank's version has a "gin-soaked" passion to it that evokes an image of a man who leads a "swingin'" lifestyle almost in an attempt to hide from the world how he waits for his one true love. I always imagined him singing this song to himself or to a woman's photo after closing time at a bar. The music mirrors that swinging, smoldering passion. Its perfect!!!
I love Sinatra, but the musical distribution and the somewhat happy music destroys the rhythm and the meaning of the song . I agree that Connies recording is the best. Sounds so pure and from heart. Nevertheless Sinatra is AWESOME!
For those of you who think Sinatra sounds drunk or annoying have some advice for you, go to the docters and have them flush out the wax buildup in those ears!!
This song was from the movie "The Umbrellas of Cherbourg"; which is an excellent movie. In the movie, just like the rest of the dialogue, it's all sung in French.
@UpwardsFallings You're so right on this one. To be fair Sinatra has done many fine recordings, but his approach here and voice are horrible. If you ever run across the one by Eddie Fisher, that recording is special. Also the one by Connie Francis is excellent.
@CarlDuke Yeah, Connie's version is excellent. I liker hers the most. But I just can't stand Sinatra's voice in here. It's too robotic and vibrato-ish. He sounds drunk.
Never mind the voice - what a SINGER!!!!

The only thing wrong with this is the recording quality. Frank is not drunk! If you want the ultimate version, check out Matt Monro's great cover!
