Thank you eronfilm for the posting on criticizing music. Don Cherry of course is one of the great horn players of all time. There is constant exploration in music, the 60s a real testament to that. Musicians explore then re-define themselves a result of discovery from that exploration. Don has put me in total oneness with music in following his exploration. One may not appreciate ever place the exploration has been but it cannot be discounted.
Woops to Craiglend. Mea Culpa. I looked at my CD's and I was thinking of Stellar Regions, where Ali played alone. Ali and Jones both played on Meditations. Was "Stellar" the first record that Alice Coltrane played with John? Thanks, and check other new young jazz drumming giants like Tyshawn Sorey or Jamire Williams.
This footage comes from a documentary that was shown on Swedish television. I don't know if the documentary was a Swedish production, but it was very interesting and it had lots of shots from Don's time in Sweden, with all the beautiful textile applications that Moki had done.
The first time I heard Rashied Ali soloing on Coltrane's Sun Ship my brain almost melted. I was 18. I am a drummer and R.A. is one of my heroes. All you idiots that don't think this is music need to expand your music intellect beyond Kenny G. These guys are titans of jazz. Rashied is comping and trading 3's in heaven now.
Luckily i got to see Don Cherry perform with "Codona" with Colin Walcott and Nana Vasconcelos back in the 80's...great trio, also "Old & New Dreams" with, Dewy Redman, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell, sadly Ed, Don and Colin are no longer with us, as well as Rashied Ali whom i never got a chance to witness in concert, of course the great James Blood i've witnessed in performance..
Rashied Ali is a hero of mine, and I appreciate his music, free jazz is an aquired taste but you have to just wrap your head around the cocept of what free jazz is you have to take small bites, then increase the servings. I never understood it but eventually I heard the music
Hahaaa. Wow. Not one thing about this is normal. The clothes they're wearing, the place their playing, their attitude. The filming's crappy, the sound quality's bad. But you know what... THIS IS AMAZING. GOD BLESS DON, RASHIED AND BLOOD. amazing people playing amazing music.
if you're talking about around the 8 min mark, then i'd suggest "grazing dreams" by colin walcott with john abercrombie (ECM)...if you're talking about the middle, i'd suggest "tales of captain black" by james blood ulmer on on Artists' House (out of print)
Awesome Drummers from that period of Avant Garde or whatever it is called are always mind opening and fearless. Or atleast from what I've been blessed to hear in my short life. Seems there is a certain time frame from the past like for Fusion and other forms of Jazzier and especially improvisational styles. Almost like they could dissapear someday and people will only have weird abused exploited child entertainers to look at. What is more abstract in culture? Perhaps one is more visual.
I interviewed Rashied in 2008 just before he died, and he showed me this clip on his Mac. He was psyched that it was up on YouTube. Thanks for posting!
Don Cherry, James Blood Ulmer, Rashied Ali - thank god for these medicine men. - People who don't dig this probably need 5 sessions chromatique colonic irrigation, or a good old fart.
One of the tedious things about Youtube is seeing the comments from folks who've got nothin' better to do than criticise what they don't like. THIS is for those who crit unneccesarily: Music, art, film, dance - whatever, you name it - are very subjective things when it comes to what you dig and what you don't dig. Let's say I said I liked the color green would you say "Oh, that's lame!" or "Green? That's not a color!"? I hope not. Please don't do it regarding other things. Thanks.
Fantastic stuff - thanks for this rare post. While some will appreciate its true worth, others will rant - not having a clue what it's about. They should find something they like rather than run down what they don't understand.
Thank you for posting this very challenging music. I don't listen to this kind of thing all the time, but the older

I agree that it is quite a challenge to listen to this noise. It cracks me up that you actually think that listening to this opens your mind. I'd advise you to close it fast before real damage is done. Listening to repetitive, nerve wracking loud noises has been known to cause REAL brain damage. They're doing something REAL alright. Just like it would be REAL if I went out in the alley and banged on trash can lids. These are guys noodling on their instruments. Period. Just keepin' it REAL.
Oh, dear friend of Lord Krishna, you must be sent here as court jester. Your comments are truly too humorous to be offensive. The "noodlers," are the players who know enough of the "rules" to inoffensively play over a set of changes without causing undue stress to the listener (or to their own tiny minds). Everybody, whether playing inside or out, is guilty of noodling from time to time. Perhaps you should try listening to some of these players in more conventional settings. Just try.
They indeed may know enough to be unoffensive; unfortunately by not applying that knowledge they are offensive.
An analogy would be a builder who decides to build and experiments by building disregarding all rules. He doesn't level or clear the building site, follow any building plans, measure his cuts, plumb anything or check for square. Unsurprisingly his house doesn't stand and he is left with a pile of materials scattered about. No house. Here we have notes scattered about. No music.
Funny, as to free jazz I've always dug drummers best: Rashied Ali, Ed Blackwell, Billy Higgins, Charles Moffat, Milford Graves etc. To me they sound intellectual the right way. When I heard that Sunny Murray sometimes played with a set of knitting needles, it made me laugh. Love it!
wow, so many different sounds evoloving; music soothes the beast, keep the peace! RIP ALI, another great artist that Blessed our senses...I am thankful for being able to listen to this sounds..thanks for posting..
Go in Peace Rashied! Many a night I spent in your club Ali's Alley down in Soho, NYC before all the designer shops and high end yahoo's moved in to gentrificate the area. Jaki Bayard, Hammiet Bluett.. and many many more.. you are already Missed!
I understand that it can be hard to enjoy that just by listening, but here you can even see what's going on - that's great. I like it.
It's neither noise or Jazz, let's think about 'sound' here - and maybe sound just doesn't follow the categories in which we like to think. It has been there long before us...
If you don't like it you might have a totally different taste. :-)
Oh no I really don't know what jazz is. With a collection of over 400 jazz albums and CD's, having gone to more jazz clubs, seen more live jazz performers over a 35 year period than you probably even know existed; I think I have a pretty good grasp of what jazz is and ISN"T. This ISN'T!
I did leave my ears open; that is for the very short time I could stand to hear this noise. You don't want it classified as jazz, fine. Then noise it will be. It sure as hell isn't any classification that would be called music; regardless of the category.
All music is just noise. It all has to do with what you or your surroundings have convinced you sounds "good". It's all a very individualistic and opinionated thing. Some people can't relate to this type of expression and that's fine, but don't dismiss it as not music. That just makes you sound like a nazi and a fool.
No all music is not noise and only a fool would make such an idiotic comment. Noise is defined as sounds that lack musical qualities.
Speaking of Nazi's; I'm sure they used this type of noise to torture prisoners. I'm also sure that it was very effective. Racket really is the best word to describe this. Racket: confused clattering noise. Also noise: sounds that lack agreeable musical qualities or are noticeably unpleasant. The definitions of those two words perfectly describe this video.
Ha. You can read definitions from a book all you want. All music is is noise or sounds. How you organize them or hear them is up to you. This is beyond book definitions. Oh well, maybe you'll grow up and learn to appreciate this type of expression one day. I guess I should have learned by reading your other comments that you are just a closed minded nazi. That's OK. Enjoy that.
Definitions are how we use language and words. Their meaning is how we communicate. Therefore when you know the definition of a word you know how to use it properly. The definition of noise perfectly describes this video. Just because you don't like accurate and clear definitions doesn't make it incorrect or inaccurate. It simply makes you ignorant. Immature, lacking in discernment, naive and tasteless people appreciate noise. May you grow out of those qualities. Open your mind to that.
Wow. Same argument. It's like arguing with people who believe in god that use the bible as their argument. You are using a reference that has no credibility to me in this argument. So, I'll let you enjoy what you enjoy and I'll enjoy what I enjoy.
If the argument was correct initially and you didn't understand it, then it was clear that I had to draw a picture to help you understand. It's like talking to a child with simple words and then when he doesn't understand, you have to draw him a picture. Thank You. I will continue to enjoy music and you can continue to enjoy noise.
Also it amazes me that references to definitions of words used in an argument has no credibility to you. That's like saying you give no credibility to a gun used in a gun fight. Don't use ad hominem arguments either.I make a claim, you point out something objectionable in me,the terribly offensive NAZI term, therefore my claim is false. It's very weak to use that argument. The nazi claim belittles the victims of the atrocities by the real nazi's when you use it so irresponsibly. Shame on you.
All of those people look bored. Free stuff is cool, but I don't know... I like it when people play outside of the changes but still keep the form because it adds more of a structure while still sounding chaotic. Jazz rules!
Fucking precious cargo. These guys are on the short list of reasons why I don't go on a killing spree... Don Cherry, Ali, and Blood Ulmer, together?!!!!???? O.M.F.G.
Bellissimo. E che mago il chitarrista. La prima chitarra free jazz che io abbia mai sentito. Don Cherry sempre fantastico. E anche il batterista ci sta dentro alla grande.. awesome!
some may say that from the look of the crowd that this music is discredited from being truly enjoyable but if you really look into their eyes you'll find that they've probably forgotten all the woes of their day . . .
Thanks for posting this. Cherry had a good technique here, and Rashied Ali is awesome. He will always deserve great credit for Coltrane's Interstellar Space, an incredible work. Love Blood Ulmer too! Love to hear the musicians' voices; love to look in the subtitles for cognates with German and English.
If I'm not mistaken, this program was called "Don Cherry : Det Aer inte min music (It is not my music)," directed by Urban Lasson for a Swedish TV, 1978(motion picture).
This is amazing. I would like to hear more free jazz stuff of Ulmer but it´s hard to find. I´ve never seen an album that he plays with this Ali and Cherry. Does it exist?
What´s the title of the original concert? Is there any album or video of this concert?
Woah...this is really fantastic! Thanks so much for sharing! Any idea when this is from?

I don't exactly understand this music... but I connect to it more than I do to most popular music. Thanks for posting.

Thanks for posting this. Cherry had a good technique here, and Rashied Ali is awesome. He will always deserve great credit for Coltrane's Interstellar Space, an incredible work. Love Blood Ulmer too! Love to hear the musicians' voices; love to look in the subtitles for cognates with German and English.

a rare and beautiful performance. Don plays kamaln'goni later on in the video, prefiguring later projects like 'Nu'.

OK..
If I'm not mistaken, this program was called "Don Cherry : Det Aer inte min music (It is not my music)," directed by Urban Lasson for a Swedish TV, 1978(motion picture).
Thanks for sharing.

Those pockets on Cherry are different lol.
Blood Ulmer plays like a god on this vid.
Rashied makes us walk and drop all over the music.
Outstading.

They've never recorded any album together.
But, there might be a documentary with this show made by a Swedish TV program somewhere..
1978.

I'm a huge fan of all these guys and all their work.
I think this particular performance needs a bassist however. jsut for that deeper layer underneath it all.. it sounds hollow in segments

This is amazing. I would like to hear more free jazz stuff of Ulmer but it´s hard to find. I´ve never seen an album that he plays with this Ali and Cherry. Does it exist?
What´s the title of the original concert? Is there any album or video of this concert?
