That lead guitar break has always been one of my all time favorites... not because it was technically brilliant, but because it was crazy. Notes are jumping all over the room on that one.
Pete Townsend has said that he thinks Ray Davies is the poet laureate of his time. In the book Kink by Dave Davies, He remarked after they had returned from their first U.S. tour and he heard the who's "Can't Explain" --
Oooh, they've knicked our sound! Ray should be Knighted by the Queen, Sir Raymond Douglas Davies has a nice ring to it!
To bad songs like this get sold for commercials. All I think about when I hear this song is that damn commercial. Which is sad if you think about it. It happens a lot and pretty much ruins the song.
I'm with you. Santogold already sold out "Lights Out"! I know it's money, but it pretty much cheapens and dumbs down the quality and pleasure of the song!
great clip !

Is this the appearance where Ray had been bitten by some insect on tour and had to dance with a swollen foot?

Wonder why Dave Davies plays root 6 chords for the entire song? I know it's mimed, but by doing that he can hardly take his eyes off the fretboard.

Old rock has drive to it,keeps going forward where today's music just sits there, whines, moans, going nowhere. You get the picture..

I think it's neat that the girls are models for this song. The one from 1:38-1:42 resembles Barbara Streisand a little.

Alot of people say the who are the original hard rockers. but I have to say the kinks rock pretty hard too.
TheWho1231 3 years ago 5
and the kinks were before the who, so the kinks must have had some influence on the who

Thats probably true.

Pete has spoken very highly of Ray's skills as a songwriter. I do believe he's a bit in awe of him.
