Yes, there is money in merch but album sales DO help. The people they interviewed for this article are not exactly huge bands. Trust me, when you sell 5,000,000 records, you are making money from them. It has MORE than paid back the cost of making the album and touring.

To sumfanrock, Bands do make money off their record sales. Why do you think they promote it so much? After all is said and done, they don't make much, but they make some. I am in a touring band, on an indie label, as well I have friends in bands on Universal Records. So yes, they do make money off it. If they make 4$ per cd, sold at 15$, its not even 40%. But 4$ x 100,000 copies is $400,000. So shut up (;
