Whatever happened to James Baker? The Victims, the Scientists...what a pedigree. In the late 80s I seem to remember I saw a single from the James Baker Experience called ``Born To Be Punched'', which to my lasting regret I never bought. Haven't seen or heard anything of the man since.
@ChicksDigBeige The 'punch' song is on my nzoz1985 channel... simply type James Baker nzoz1985, you'll get it... he's still busy working in bands and whatever... there's a wiki write up on him.
Kim and the most excellent James Baker on drums... WTF.... They didnt have live tv in the 70's 80's. it was all lip sinc.. Not a choice of the artists, just the way it was. This is classic Australian roots music. James is the best. xx
@SnotAngle ha ha ha, Countdown was a terribly tacky show. Some wise guy must have thought it'd be great to put on both bands in that one segment, finding some humour in the band names... whatever... The Aliens had another hit called 'Confrontation', which got them commercial success.... whilst the Scientists were being refused gigs inspite of their appearance on Countdown. Aliens sucked - Scientists were cool, but the latter struggled.. but hmmm... who, on youtube, are getting the most views
Sounds quite 60's. Nonsurprisingly. Never heard so much punky beatmusic as on Oz radio and Bruce Milne in particular. Ok for a starterspoint. Later on they would blossom in swamplaaaand.
@StayFrosty4 it is a good song. it's also a good band. the leadsinger may have seen better days. however, he isn't the ugliest thing fronting band. in fact, i would think of him as looking a little everyday. i wouldn't think his looks would even call for a comment. are american really that superficial?
@nzoz1980 Unfortunately many of my fellow americans fit the 'ugly american' stereotype epitomized by StayFrosty4. First heard The Scientists with the 'We Had Love' & 'Swampland' 7"ers when I picked 'em up new at a local record shop. Fantastic band, I still play those records and a couple 12" LP & Ep's I found back then, too. Long live Kim Salmon, long live the Scientists.
give that drummer and kick drum!! Excellent track. They've reformed I see and are playing ATP New York. Unfortunately I live in Auckland so wont be making that one, shame...
Check out AK79, the classic New Zealand Punk compilation that has: Suburban Reptiles, The Scavengers, The Terrorways, Proud Scum, The Swingers, The Primmers, Toy Love, The Features, Spelling Mistakes and Marching Girls (aftermath of The Scavengers). killer comp, check it out.
study that drummer his name is James Baker. He is instumental in starting up and playing in every really cool band to come out of OZ - the Victims, Hoodoo Gurus, Dubrovniks, James Baker Experience, Scientists, Beasts of Bourbon plus others....legend
That's James Baker kiddo. Drummer for The Hoodoo Gurus, and The Beasts of Bourbon. He was doing swamp and grunge way before Seattle "discovered" it...
Once owned bassist Ian Sharples bass rigg a nice big 70's number until it blew up and burnt down my cousins house to the ground.Oh well, all in the name of r"n"r i suppose.
I remember seeing them on Countdown. As with all decent bands in the so called Countdown era, they only got their 3 mins of fame due to a pop song. Fortunately other radio stations played The Scientists as they evolved with a cult following, and we could all buy their records and see them live without the BS of that idiot Meldrum. Being out of Australia for sometime, I have not followed the band and was pleasantly surprised to see Kim on TV. He is still a very handsome man!
@nzoz1980 Lead guitarist is Ben Juniper, son of the well respected Perth artist Robert Juniper. I remember Ben telling me many moons ago about being in The Scientists and how he appeared on Countdown. Thanks for the upload, I now, finally, get to see the performance.

1) Tales from the Australian Underground, Vol. 2: 1977-1979 on Feel Presents/Revolver label.
2) Inner City Sound: Australian Punk and Post-Punk on Laughing Outlaw
Good time for Aussie rock, both in the mainstream and the underground.
