In the 90's series, a group of time travelers went back through time to stop Godzillas' creation. They took him from his island home and dumped him into the ocean thinking he would drown. The bomb still transformed him, however, he encountered a nuclear submarine and absorbed its refined, more powerful nuclear energy transforming him further. He now has 2 levels of power, atomic (Blue) and nuclear (Red). Its popularity has caused it to show up in movies even after the 90's series was stopped.

Orange is actually the color it turns when Godzilla is overheating so it is more powerful but he can't use it for long before he literally goes nuclear O_o

In Godzilla Mechagodzilla 2, Rodan's dying action was to heal GOdzilla's 2nd brain in his legs (I'm not making this up) allowing him to walk again, but the radiation also upgraded his atomic breath allowing to take down Mechagodzilla. then in Spacegodzilla, he used it to take down Spacegodzilla's shoulder crystals (while in the rest of the flick he used blue, which did no real damage to Space). In Destroyah, it was Burning Godzilla's default.

Hmm...

I'd personally love to see a band of survivors scrounging in the ruins, fighting Godzilla spawn until a big monster (kind of like Orga, but smaller) arrives and begins to lay waste them their number. All seems lost...until Godzilla himself steps in and utterly brutalizes even that giant monster. It would make Godzilla look more badass then ever and establish that he's more of an anti-hero then a villain.
