People would ask for money [instead of candy] door-to-door at Mummers' Dances, Abbot's Bromley Horn Dances, Wren Hunting Dances, Hooden Horse contests, Mari Llwyd contests, Wassailing, etc. In the Victorian era, alcohol or money was exchanged for soul cakes brought door-to-door. As for candy, goodie filled piñatas have been used by the Ancient Aztecs, Ancient Chinese,etc.
