  • Basically all you photo geniuses, you get what ya pay for, ask professionals about their equipment not a bunch of jack offs on YouTube !

  • @morloff Don't be rude.

  • Dam dragging on with the review.. This is horrible..theres more HUH than anything else.. And did you know that the 50 f/1.4 smokes this L piece of crap..smokes it out of the water..

  • @BX0207 Umm not really. The L beats the 1.4 in every aspect pretty much. Build Quality, Color Rendition, Bokeh, and sharpness. The only thing is that its overpriced at $1600. Nevertheless, its Canon's best fast 50.

  • this guy thinks that bigger is better

  • stupid asshole. Where are images taken with this lens? Asshole!

  • why u make movies with calculator

  • I had 50 1.4 and it was kinda excellent. Compared to that 1.8 is rubbish and then again, compared to 1.2, 1.4 is rubbish.

  • PUTT OFF that dam lensdop., What a terrible video

  • @CreativeOutletHobbie Lensdop means frontlenscover.

  • Why dint U get the 85?

  • @gonetoworkbbackin5mi I eventually did get the 85 also and I made the right choice getting the 50 first. The 85 is a very niche portrait only lens.

  • Get a girlfriend.,this isnt the way too get a hardone.Or you must buy a Canon EF 400mm f1.2 L IS USM.

  • The 1.8 is much sharper wide open and has a higher resolution at f 5.6

  • Dude wanna sell the old 50 mm 1.8. Or even since I'm a struggling student give it away????

  • @justinjohnsonist hah thanks for paying attention to the video. The 50 1.8 actually makes a good gift, so its gone.

  • yawn

  • The first lens review I have ever seen with the lens cap on - well done.

  • If I could afford the 85 1.2 I'd get it. I just got a 5d2 and my 50mm 1.2 is now too wide to what Im used to on my 40D. If I had the 85 1.2 it would be close to the focal length I was used to shooting with the 40D. Good review man.

  • @KeijinShiho Keep playing with the 50. Try to get use to the new width. People just love that range. Thanks for watching

  • @KeijinShiho why i use a 28mm on my 40d as my 50. so when i upgrade to full frame ill be right at home with 50mm. 50 on a crop is too narrow for me.

  • buying a lens for over 1000 $ using a filter on it?... hmmm i don't know..

  • @dominikwoerner Yes it's a great safety feature. Buy a high quality filter

  • @dominikwoerner As long as you buy a nice filter. I bought this lens and got a filter... not for front element protection, but to make it fully weather resistant. You have to have the filter for this guarantee.

  • How is your lens at f1.2 because a few complain about it not being sharp at f1.2

  • @InFrameProduction not as sharp as the 85, but good enough at 1.2

  • Best of best, leica 50mm f0.95 :)

but i still enjoy my 50mm f1.0 that i've had for 6 years

  • @HitmanGTA4 yeah but i would never be dumb enough to spent 10.5k on a lense..... even if i was filthy rich i would never spend that much on a lense like that, the most i would go is 5 k on the canon 300mm f2.8L thats if i was in need and had more money than brains

  • @shreader327 Back in the day wasnt that expesinve, i payed around 2K used

  • THE KING OF THE LENSES.

  • @richardxs The 50 may not be king, but I like it.

  • @CreativeOutletHobbie maybe not King you are right, maybe The Prince of lenses...I was looking for it at amazon, pretty expensive huh? around $2000

  • @richardxs I've found that amazon doesn't always have the lowest prices for lenses. BHPhotovideo has it for $1600. I would check them and then Andorama. Lens prices have gone up lately as well.

  • @CreativeOutletHobbie yeah! you are right, thank you for the link.

  • @richardxs Didn't you know another lens??? Do you know f/0.95 Noctilux? 50 1.0L?? You just THE KING OF THE LAME.

  • @hutdockz I know about it but dont have it :P...ok it is not the king it is just my favorite lense til now.

  • @richardxs king's always the 85(:

  • @richardxs nope, the 85 1.2 MK II still reigns supreme as the king of primes (at least for Canon)

  • WOWW... IT IS BIGGER... IT IS BETTER...

  • So despite all the dialogue; does the lens cap come off?

  • @46ace I have a more detailed view in another one of my videos.

  • This is my next splurge..I have always wanted one but now that the issues have been relatively sorted with the 09-11 copies i will be definitely getting one..

    I love my 50mm the most.. :)

  • I don't think there is a back focusing issue with this lens, I think the FOV is so shallow that it is difficult to auto focus exactly where you want.

  • The back foucusing issue i think is mainly user error. Shooting at 1.2 alot of people cant hold the focus still and blame the lens.

  • +$700 for all L series lens xD

  • @olegnabunyi except for the 70-200mm

  • You haven't found backfocus issues because thast not what it does. It's known for whats called focus shift which occurs when you stop the lens down from about f2.0-f4.0 at or near minimum focus distance. The date code has nothing to do with having or not having the issue. It is inherent in the design of the lens. You probably just don't shoot under the circumstances where you would notice the issue.

  • Ear piercing audio . ouch!!!

  • @MsDreamingLife

If you need to ask that question, you shouldnt buy a 1000+ dollar lens.

  • You meant saturation is rich and bokeh is round. =]

  • Wait, how do you know when your lens was made?

  • what does noise have to do with your 1.8 lens?..

  • @sillywabbit92 if using low f (like you would with a 50mm f/1.8 during low light conditions) and raise the ISO, there's likely to be more noise. I have the 50mm, and aside from the focusing problems during low light conditions, I tend to get a bit of noise (even at 400/500 ISO) and lose sharpness when I get rid of it. The main reason why is because you don't get IS with this lens. Otherwise you could just use a lower shutter speed and switch on the IS instead of using low f and highier ISO.

  • HELLO. I HAVE THE CANNON 5D MARK 2, AND I WAS WONDERING WHAT LENS WOULD BE BEST TO CREATE A MUSIC VIDEO. WHAT LENS WOULD YOU PREFER TO GIVE A CLEAN PICTURE LIKE THE TV SHOW "HAWAII FIVE-O ON CBS". PLEASE HELP ME. THANKS, I HAVE THE 24-105; HOWEVER, ITS NOT DOING A WELL ENOUGH JOB FOR ME.

  • @NEENOCALIMOVIES you are probably just having focusing and stablitiy issues. although you are using the same camera, people who are shooting hawaii five-o use even more expensive automatic focusing equipment and rigs. the 24-105 should be sufficient

  • freaking awesome lens,man..

  • people who are worried about getting blur from a lens dont deserve this lens. seriously, if you cant understand light and shutter speed, you dont deserve a godly lens like this...

  • i got the same mouse and i hate it -.-

    whatever. Nice lens ;)

  • @MsDreamingLife Seriously you must have something wrong with your hands if you shoot pictures with IS on al the time. Why dont you just try to shoot without IS on.

  • @MsDreamingLife yes its a perfect lens for low light photography. Most prime lens don't have IS.

  • Thanks for the review. Like you, have the 5D2, and 50mm 1.8. I've been eyeing the 50mm 1.2L for the longest time. But now Sigma has the 85mm 1.4. Decisions, Decision.

  • @raymhensley Look up Canon lens date codes on google and you can figure out the year system. If you buying used you can confirm it that way. If your buying from andoroma or BH then your probably getting the latest.

  • Hi, I am using a 7d Body and considering getting a prime lens. I use a 7D and obviously it has the 1.6 crop sensor. So a 50mm works out to actually be around 78mm, right? Since I am using a 7D, would purchasing the 35mm L give me the same results as the 50mm on a 5D? I love the results one gets with the 50mm 1.2 but im just wondering how it would be different on the 7D and if I should consider a different L lens. Thanks.

  • @EggiWeggi I don't have any experience with the 35l lens, but your logic is correct. I have looked at the 35l lens but I felt it was to big physically for ease of use. I think that lens is somewhat older as well so I'm wondering if they are going to update it soon. Maybe rent one and see what you think or start with the non-L version first.

  • @CreativeOutletHobbie Firstly, thankyou for the quick reply. I went to a local camera store to speak further about them as well. I really love the 50mm lens and am thinking of getting the 1.4 in the mean time and will consider upgrading later on.

  • @EggiWeggi No problem. That sounds like a good idea. I upgraded from the 50 1.8.

  • sexy! Not as sexy as the 85mm f1.2 but still a really nice looking lens

  • @3883624 thanks. true about the 85 1.2. I played with it in the store a lot and did a lot of reading and I just felt the 85 was to long and heavy for what I needed it for. I still want to get it at some point.

  • I have the same setup as you and jumped from 1.8 Mark II as well. Totally worth it. I too have a 2009 lens and no issues to report. Interesting short story: I bought this lens and didn't use it often for a month or two after purchasing it. Found myself using the kit lens (24-105mm L) more often. But now that I started using the 50 1.2 I can't put it down!!!

  • @alexan215 its on my camera 90% of the time as well. Now I just wish the 5d 2, focusing system would be better or upgraded.

  • I'm sorry to say but you should of got the Sigma 50mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM lens. It's better than the Canon 50mm f1.2 in every aspect .

  • @soysaucenwasabi That looks like a nice one.

  • shutter speed brohaim!!! duh!!! =)

  • @ignacymatuszewski excellent, good to hear. This lense has barely left my camera since I bought it.

  • I was waiting for you to take off the lens cap off.

    never happend.

  • @CrazyJimKU sorry about that. I have other videos on it now.

  • Good vid, Just got my 50 1.2L for almost a week, my copy is the early Dec 06 version, UU12XX, been shooting and testing it in both Day and low light with it wide open @1.2 at low light it does take a lil more to get it focus spot on, in day light it is sharp at wide open and fast, no real focus issues here, loving it!

  • Thanks for getting back. Can't wait for more vids on this beast:) It would be fantastic if you could put up pictures taken with this lens also. Thanks for the vids!!

  • Great vide.

I also was looking into getting this lens but was held back do to the backfocusing reviews. I'm really happy to hear that you're not having any issues.

btw, how is the focusing in low light conditions? and can you do a video showing focusing speed? thanks!

  • Thanks! Focusing in low light conditions is the same as any other lens. If there isn't any light and no contrast, then it wont focus. If you do find focus manually it takes an amazing picture. I have some shots of a pitch black sky on high iso with this lens and its pretty impressive. I'm planning to do some more video's on this lens.

  • Hey- thanks for getting back.

Can't wait for more vids on this lens +your other gear.

I really love the design and look of this lens also.

  • @JD95

the back focusing issues only apply to the early build date models back in 2006, if you buy one that has a build date in 2009/2010 you wont have this issue.

  • 50mm lenses are great walk around lenses for 35mm cameras, unfortunately with the crop factor on most digital slrs it loses some of that. However it is a great investment if you ever see yourself getting a full frame in the future, especially if you like low light shooting (which I know I do). Of course you already have a full frame camera, so Im sure its a great fit.

  • Congrats man! Glad to hear you are having no back focus issues, I know you were concerned with that. Are you planning on selling the 1.8?

  • the 50mm is a "must have".
