Canada and most European countries spend about 8% of their GDP for universal healthcare. Canadians can go to any doctor they want to get whatever services they want and overall it's cheaper! The U.S. system of private health care suffers under the heavy hand of its government. When our federal government gets involved in anything, it raises costs. Taxes, regulations, etc. work to increase those costs and market displacement. We have highly paid bureaucrats that are paid to regulate and oversee much of our economy. These bureaucrats produce nothing. The U.S. is the largest creditor, debtor, employer, contractor, pension guarantor, etc. in our whole nation. You get the picture.

This is because the U.S. government is mandating the expansion of coverage to certain individuals whilst not leveraging price controls. Also, health care is cheaper in countries that socialize the system because the government uses prices controls, generally rationing. Government bureaucrats decide what gets covered, and there are limited appeals. Once the decision is made, they generally have to seek care in a private market elsewhere. The massive piece of legislation that passed in the U.S. will produce something different, but it will still be government run and mandated that people participate.

I generally don't think that any EU country is going to pick up the tab for someone on vacation that gets hurt. And in reality there are very few people that go bankrupt due to medical bills in the US.

The problem you don't recognize is the fact that Statism destroys markets. As governments grow larger, they become parasitic. They require more taxes to generate revenue. Yes, everybody in Britain is insured when they pay taxes, and they pay dearly. They get denied treatments that people can get in the U.S., even if it is at great cost. The dentistry under NHS is astoundingly horrible. Britain nationals often go elsewhere to get care, places like Denmark for instance.

The dentist thing, that might be because we have a full fledged private system for it (so the NHS doesnt have it as a priority like i dont know, cancer which 1 in 3 people get) As for "denied" very few people get denied if it will help them live for years, my cousin for example has CF in the USA system she likely would have died well over a decade ago (lives in 1 of the poorest places in the UK), but here, she got several full heart/lung transplants, really denied huh.

And as for "pays dearly", might want to look at the overall tax numbers, this might be because our supposed "labour" government has systematically attacked the poor making them pay more and also attacked the NHS making it worse (both Labour and the tories do this). You decry the abuse of the NHS(and subsequently those who rely on it) by Labour, but you don't consider the fact that the Britain government has made abuse possible by creating such a program. Then comes the rationing. The only way for government to cut costs is to ration certain services or levy price controls. "Sorry, we can't/won't pay for that." So far as I know, Britain dentists have yearly quotas of patients for NHS.
