Is anyone's opinion going to be changed from all this haggling over which version is best? Not likely. It isn't automatic that the original is the best. To some it is. To others it's not.......it's a matter of opinion!
Dylan's version is the best and most heartfelt, but a close second is the version by Them with Van Morrison. This version just sounds like a person singing the song and not feeling the words.
Re @red1dev: This is a very bias dylan-preferer response. Why does one version have to be better? Consider that the song is not just for the listener.
@red1dev Dylan's version is the best. Sure someone could re-paint the Mona Lisa, but could it be better? This is one of Dylan's masterpieces, and Baez is paying tribute to it. But, they are Dylan's words and feelings. Only Dylan can express the true feelings behind the words. Joan Baez recognized Dylan's brilliant songwriting. She has a beautiful voice, but Dylan's songs are not necessarily meant to be sung with a beautiful voice. So many of his songs come from heartache and misery.

How many times do I have to state that music is like any art form, a matter of personal taste. 'Better' or 'worse' is all relative to the listener's ear. I like both Baez & Dylan, but I prefer Baez's rendition of this song. As someone once said, 'opinions are like arseholes, everybody has one', including you & I !!
by the logic expressed here, Kriss Kristofferson's versions would be the best renderings of his fine writing, which most people--including Kristofferson--say is simply not the case.
@tigerdylanyoung Haha, it is all true. and still Joan's version is much better. Much more width and tension in betwenn text, sound, and melody. I mean: I not just like it more -- it IS much better. It needs to be heard, though. Thanks Joan -- most underrated angel of a long gone epoque.
@tigerdylanyoung Yes,I agree with you in essence, and I'm not a great fan of covers in general, but I do have a soft spot for this one. This one and Farewell Angelina are two of my favourite Dylan songs. The latter was,of course, also covered by Baez, but I much prefer the Dylan original - together with its "camouflaged parrot" extra verse! Bob Dylan was a huge influence on my writing right from the early 60's and it's a sign of his genius that all his songs still sound fantastic and are still hip.
I like it best when the "The Seldom Scene" - Bluegrass/Folk got a hold of it - youtube.com/watch?v=tQTgnPnp8Ig&feature=endscreen&NR=1

The best version of this Dylan Song is from Van Morrison / Them.

Dylan and Baez needed to meet. It was in the stars. They both heavily influenced
each other.

@celiimar I don't care for it either. The only thing interesting about this song is that it may ahve been witten with Baez in mind.
