Nothing is funnier than a bunch of comedians trying not to laugh.Never forget the show when Bob Newhart told Dean Martin " I need a straight man who wouldn't laugh . "
@Niteowl128 the class laughed. Then she sent me to the principals office requesting a month suspension...but when i explained everything to him: he laughed and gave me a big hug. (he hates her 2)
I know on Hot In Cleveland they have guest stars on there who have worked with the main cast in the past. Since Betty White is one of the main cast on Hot In Cleveland, I would love to see Vickie Lawrence and Carol Burnett on that show as guests just to be reunited with Betty White. :)
I loved this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! With so many great segments, when they did "The Family", was my favorite of all. Later, I enjoyed "Mama's Family", when it became a show. Was "Mama's Family" ineligible for Emmy consideration, because I don't ever think
it got a nomination, much less a win, and it was one of the funniest shows on TV.
I always thought it was funny that Vicki could only keep from breaking up when she was Mama. I don't even think Tim could get to her when she was playing Mama.
@Tannimd i'm pretty sure Tim had Vicki going during the "elephant" sketch. You didn't see her but the look on Carols face as she looks at Vicki kinda senses that Vicki was loosing control
I have it on the authority of Peter Scolari (who played Dad Szalinski on the TV series Honey, I shrunk the Kids, and who was great friends with Harvey Corman) that the rehearsals often had precious little to do with what they would actually do on the Carol Burnett set, and that the cast reliably had a pool going on who would be the one to make Harvey break up on camera. Tim Conway's ability to hold a straight face was diabolical!
always love Caro B. i even wrote to her and she send me an autograph and pictures of the cast on her show, i love you for always....thanks for the laughs!
I LOVED carol and all the cast. Mama's family had a undertone of reality. I was living a difficult childhood with absent dad, alcoholic mom and brother out of control and taking drugs. It was really a tough time. I saw the quality in Mama's family but at that time it hit very close to home for me.
T.V is shit now compared to what it was in the 70's. and 80's Family shows, Comedies, Drama's, Cop shows all so good. I'm glad to have grown up when I did, I learned some really good morals and values from what USE to be on t.v. instead of a "steady diet" of the crap they have on today!!
@atlasshrugged2u Amen! I do not watch modern television shows at all. About the only things good about televsion these days are the educational channels, Animal Planet, and Investigation Discovery.
@RetroJenny Right?...doesen't it just blow you away all the crap they have on television?...
Stupid reality shows, daytime t.v. even worse, shows for kids that push all kinds of agenda's that I don't want my kids "experimenting" with If you know what I mean...
I have a collection of classic t.v. shows on DVD like Carol Burnett, Taxi, Starsky & Hutch, Wonder Years, Fresh Prince, Family Ties etc...so that my children know what good t.v. was; and I'm happy to say they LOVE it Thank God!!
I loved this show as a kid. Nothing now compares, not even the shows I like. It always made me bust seeing Carol do her best to hide her face from the camera when she was gonna lose it during a take. And when you see Vicki starting to struggle to keep a straight face...LOL I <3 this show and God bless all the magical folks on it who have made me laugh for so long.
Has Carol or Vicki ever talked about this outtake? I would love to know what was going through Carol's mind at the time (or see the look on her face while her back was turned to the audience)
I remember watching Mamas' family on CBS on Sundays right before Tales From the Darkside back in the late 80s. These newer shows do not hold a candle to the classics.
@RetroJenny Interesting! Were the first- run syndicated shows on CBS any different from how they're currently aired in reruns. Do you notice any differences
@Tonetare I was really young during that time period so I cannot remember the details, but I have heard some people say that the original airings were longer and some scenes were cut in the reruns.
@RetroJenny Actually I think they're referring to the NBC version when they say that. The Quincy shit that displayed before the longer version of the Mama's Family song which I have in my favorites; I never hear much about the first-run syndicated/CBS episodes when they were first airing though. You're the first person who I know that's seen them when they first aired
@teasz5 well on one of the "reunion" dvds of the carol burnett show i have they saud ut was always a competition for one them to make the others crack
I'm only 26, but I have very fond memories of both "The Carol Burnett Show" and "Mama's Family". Those shows are timeless. They shit on these craptacular shows we are forced to watch now.
I think the skit is the one where they play monopoly, and I belive its on here somewhere, I saw it, its great....that and when they play sorry as well, classic.
I grew up watching this show with my grandma and we used to laugh ourselves silly. As I got older I realized how much ground breaking Carol did on tv as a comedienne. AND as a dramatic actress, she got a Golden Globe nomination as best actress for the film "The Life of the Party", a true story. I'm posting for other fans in L.A. who might want a chance to see her in person, she's hosting and will do a Q&A after.

@bughousechess Agreed--Vicki was the one they could count on to keep it together (usually) and Harvey was of course utterly hopeless, especially with Tim.
I wonder why they didnt keep this version on the episode they broadcasted. The one that aired doesnt mention anything about the "time a month" joke which is my favorite part!
@EdaBrrs - The broadcast version had a joke about Eunice having splinters in the windmills of her mind. In the mid 70's, time of the month jokes were considered obscene by the nework censors. In the 50's, it was considered obscene to show a man and woman sleeping in the same bed, even if they were husband and wife.
If i understand it right they actually wanted Carol Burnett to Play Mama, But i guess when Vicki put on the make up and the costume on and did the scene they thought she was a natural for Mama, they then gave the Eunice part to Carol. My sister looks like Eunice and acts like her also
Yeah; they did want Carol to play Mama at first, but it wasn't that Vicki was better at Mama than Carol was, it was that Carol desired to play Eunice; because she could relate more to Eunice=]
Why can't they have shows like this on T.V. anymore instead of the absolute shit that you see on T.V. nowadays? Thank god I grew up watching this show!
@ChiTown7721 I agree ! I loved this show, and now there is nothing worth watching on TV, it's all crap. Maybe I'm just getting to be a cynical old man ?
@ChiTown7721 Because the people stand for it. That is why. The PEOPLE own this fucking country, but the media has them brainwashed into thinking the MEDIA owns it. If the people revolted, said "Fuck this - we are NOT turning on the TV, we are canceling our cable subscriptions," then you'd see whatever we wanted on TV and the fucking media would be kissing OUR asses. Too bad America doesn't have any balls anymore, or it could happen.
@ChiTown7721 I agree completely, but it takes a magical cast that just "clicks" and that is exactly what happened with this show. It wasn't so much about the writing and the sets, and the guest stars; it was about the timing and the genius of the cast of the Carol Burnett show that made it what it was. It doesn't happen often in variety TV, but when it does, it's magic. The last show that came close was the original cast of Saturday Night Live and for a few years after the show started.
O.M.G! "Ridin' the cotton pony." Never heard that one before. Hysterical!

@ChiTown7721 for better or for worse, people's tastes change, and then DVD's are invented and YouTube goes online

@jennifersman "for better?"...what's "better" about new TV shows?!!!
