Like the former commenter I also found this album a bit of glorious discovery with each track and this one in particular is a thrill. I very much enjoyed watching your performance as I have often times wanted to peek at Donalds handiwork, and this was just exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks and do more!!!
the chord sequencing that starts at 1:15 has to be one of my favorite moments every of recorded music. it's cool seeing how it's done. thx for posting
Got some great memories of this song. First time I heard it was in a record store. I remember when 'Caves' started. I just couldn't believe that this music even existed, with a smile from ear to ear. I felt like Howard Carter uncovering the tomb of Tutanchamen. The greatest musical find of my life. I felt deeply thankful and happy, no other way to describe it. After hearing your rendition, I just have to get back to my piano and play. Compliments!
Dude, thanks so much! I was trying to figure this song out FOREVER the other day and couldn't get the last few chords from the chorus/inversion thing. Gah. Kudos. You're awesome.
Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoy it! It's my favourite off this album, and one of my favourite SD songs in general. I think they've been playing it live quite a bit recently, which makes me wish they would come over to England more often!
Donald the true genius behind Steely Dan? Anyone doubting Walter Beckers abilities should listen to Circus Money. The best collection of new music ive heard in many a moon. Becker/Fagan are one of the best ever songwriting teams
@logosthedestroyer agreed, but his solos on Aja were pretty damned well done (that is to say, I didn't know it was him until I read the liners).XD The video was very well done, man; you should be proud.
"The Royal Scam" is the most unsung of all Steely Dan's albums and is my personal favourite. As much as everyone reveres "Aja", "Gaucho" etc. In my opinion, "The Royal Scam" is their best album.
@ezekielthemack psstttt... keep that quiet Ezekiel! On the other hand, at least now I know I'm not alone. Royal Scam to my ears combines the best of Steely Dan (the earlier and later Dan) in one album.
This is awesome... how did you learn how to play this? I just bought a Steely Dan songbook, but the music for this song doesn't sound like when you play it.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Its learned just from ear - all the books are wrong that I've come across. I have some scores I have written for other songs though if they would help - they are just basic charts but with a little imagination you can do something. Just drop me a message with your email address if you want
There some good tablature on the net for the guitar chords. Search for "The Caves of Altamira", "Charles Seymour"; I *think* that's the one I used. Great Track!.
You did a great job. It is difficult to describe the thrill of hearing these songs for the first time thirty years ago, and those who dig recognized this song as something really unique when it first appeared in 1976. It never became a hit.
Thanks! I wish I could have heard it then! I only found out about them at college 7 or eight years ago so but they've become one of the loves of my life since then. Such an absolutely awesome band, such genius.
Despite the other comment, you'er not one chord low at all and I have perfect (apparent) pitch. You're spot .. well a bit shakey at the end but nothing important. I would buy your album. God, never give this up, I repeat, you have the gift, and while you wren't playing Stravinsky, that's a difficult piece to play. You have my applause.
Lol thanks, thats very appreciated! Well no, just semi-pro but I'm working on it! I actually play drums more than piano most of the time, I don't know why it just always seems to work out that way!
Hmm sorry about the crap sound on this one - very thin-sounding. I edited the sound to make it less boxy but the YT processing has obv filtered almost everything but the high frequencies.
Just playing bass along with this, such a cool track, nicely covered.

It's not my 'bag' to be honest. I find it rather pedestrian, and I find Becker's guitar playing intrusive.

Hey mate,
Do you ever get to play those songs in a live setting with a whole band?
Anyway, amazing job on capturing the essence of such a great band even though i've always thought Donald is the true genius behind the Dan..
Me dad fed me with them since in my mom's belly and i've never known anything as thrilling as their music.
My top 5 writer's list : Fagen,Wonder,McCartney,Bacharach,Joel just in case anyone's interested.
