  • Just playing bass along with this, such a cool track, nicely covered.

  • Amazing! I love the time changes too! Great job.

  • You are gem whoever you are!

  • awesome.

  • Awesome. killer song.

  • very talented!!

  • dude i enjoyed playing the solo part along to this...i only have to practice to be as good as you are though

  • This has to be one of the tastiest chord progressions committed to tape in popular music history. Love it!

  • @adam872 I totally agree! I love songs built around the harmonic possibilities of that noblest of all instruments, the Piano.

  • @logosthedestroyer Nice :-) You play it very well too. I must learn it myself one day...

  • what thick harmonies!!! awesome job

  • what thick harmonies!!! great job

  • This is fantastic. I was playing bass along to this. Nice work.

  • Like the former commenter I also found this album a bit of glorious discovery with each track and this one in particular is a thrill. I very much enjoyed watching your performance as I have often times wanted to peek at Donalds handiwork, and this was just exactly what I have been looking for. Thanks and do more!!!

  • would love 2 hear on a grand piano.

  • Always top drawer, sir.

  • the chord sequencing that starts at 1:15 has to be one of my favorite moments every of recorded music. it's cool seeing how it's done. thx for posting

  • @rayboludo So few people would ahve the guts to actully put that into a commercial song - but he did and it's simply amazing.

  • Got some great memories of this song. First time I heard it was in a record store. I remember when 'Caves' started. I just couldn't believe that this music even existed, with a smile from ear to ear. I felt like Howard Carter uncovering the tomb of Tutanchamen. The greatest musical find of my life. I felt deeply thankful and happy, no other way to describe it. After hearing your rendition, I just have to get back to my piano and play. Compliments!

  • Dude, thanks so much! I was trying to figure this song out FOREVER the other day and couldn't get the last few chords from the chorus/inversion thing. Gah. Kudos. You're awesome.

  • @CheeseMonkey18 Glad I could help! It's an AMAZING song!

  • @logosthedestroyer Dude this and Night belogs to mona amazing!! just amazing

  • @TheKidstarj Thank you!

  • The piano versions of the songs really bring out the richness of the harmony. Well done - a lovely version and very nicely played.

  • @festilina Thanks a lot - yeah this tune has really meaty harmonies. What a genius he is.

  • great job! love the voicings...=] you are a fantastic player.

  • wow

  • Logo, I keep revisiting this video every few months. It's such a wonderful take on an obscure SD gem.

    Thanks. :)

  • Thanks very much, I'm glad you enjoy it! It's my favourite off this album, and one of my favourite SD songs in general. I think they've been playing it live quite a bit recently, which makes me wish they would come over to England more often!

  • @playboyv12

Well said brother, this song gives me chills. A true masterpiece, and covered amazingly! TYVM Logosthedestroyer. :D

  • GREAT JOB FRIEND

  • Donald the true genius behind Steely Dan? Anyone doubting Walter Beckers abilities should listen to Circus Money. The best collection of new music ive heard in many a moon. Becker/Fagan are one of the best ever songwriting teams

  • It's not my 'bag' to be honest. I find it rather pedestrian, and I find Becker's guitar playing intrusive.

  • @logosthedestroyer agreed, but his solos on Aja were pretty damned well done (that is to say, I didn't know it was him until I read the liners).XD The video was very well done, man; you should be proud.

  • @logosthedestroyer I love how you giggled at the end it looks fun to play when you have really got it down. Musician's high?

  • @stopthrm lol yes, it probably was although I suspect my flatmate could have had something to do with it! :D

  • Hey mate,

Do you ever get to play those songs in a live setting with a whole band?

Anyway, amazing job on capturing the essence of such a great band even though i've always thought Donald is the true genius behind the Dan..

Me dad fed me with them since in my mom's belly and i've never known anything as thrilling as their music.

    My top 5 writer's list : Fagen,Wonder,McCartney,Bacharach,Joel just in case anyone's interested.

  • great job.....you voiced it really good on a lot of parts!

  • cool

  • "The Royal Scam" is the most unsung of all Steely Dan's albums and is my personal favourite. As much as everyone reveres "Aja", "Gaucho" etc. In my opinion, "The Royal Scam" is their best album.

  • So true. It really has its own sound. Well I guess they all do, but Royal Scam is so distinctive.

  • I agree 100%

  • @ezekielthemack psstttt... keep that quiet Ezekiel! On the other hand, at least now I know I'm not alone. Royal Scam to my ears combines the best of Steely Dan (the earlier and later Dan) in one album.

  • this song is epic

  • This is just ace! Do you know the nightfly?

  • wow that was beautiful

  • Dude, I am a Steely Dan Freak, and You Rock. Makes me wish I could play the keyboards (I only sing and play drums)

  • very cool

  • Hi Dave, sorry, can you give me your new mail address, please?

  • yep will drop you a message :)

  • This is awesome... how did you learn how to play this? I just bought a Steely Dan songbook, but the music for this song doesn't sound like when you play it.

  • Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it. Its learned just from ear - all the books are wrong that I've come across. I have some scores I have written for other songs though if they would help - they are just basic charts but with a little imagination you can do something. Just drop me a message with your email address if you want

  • Very tasty!

  • Ah thanks.. good poet!

  • great song, where can I find sheet music for this? I'm a guitar player, but I don't think I have the intensity to transfer all the chords to piano.

  • Hi, sorry there is no good sheet music for this to my knowledge

  • There some good tablature on the net for the guitar chords. Search for "The Caves of Altamira", "Charles Seymour"; I *think* that's the one I used. Great Track!.

  • Thanks downtwothenleft! I just enjoy playing so all the hard work is ... not so hard :D

  • You did a great job. It is difficult to describe the thrill of hearing these songs for the first time thirty years ago, and those who dig recognized this song as something really unique when it first appeared in 1976. It never became a hit.

  • Thanks! I wish I could have heard it then! I only found out about them at college 7 or eight years ago so but they've become one of the loves of my life since then. Such an absolutely awesome band, such genius.

  • The first time I heard this song, I fell in love instantly. Don't think any other Dan song resonated that quickly as this one.

  • excellent and spot on as usual. But, man . . . you used my absolute least favorite piano setting on the p-120.

  • You just solved a mystery that's been haunting me for fourteen years, namely: what the f-ck are those chords?!?!

  • Haha, glad to hear it! thanks :D

  • Thanks, I love this song too. The time signature is all 4/4 except for that one little bit which is 5/4 at about 2.15. Hope this helps!

  • Yo, that was fuckin DOPE!

  • Thanks man

  • Despite the other comment, you'er not one chord low at all and I have perfect (apparent) pitch. You're spot .. well a bit shakey at the end but nothing important. I would buy your album. God, never give this up, I repeat, you have the gift, and while you wren't playing Stravinsky, that's a difficult piece to play. You have my applause.

    mjh

  • Excellent. Flawless. Wow. If you're not pro, you should be.

  • Lol thanks, thats very appreciated! Well no, just semi-pro but I'm working on it! I actually play drums more than piano most of the time, I don't know why it just always seems to work out that way!

  • good sound, but at the beginning i think ur one chord low.

But you're kinda cheating because theres an IPOD AT THE BEGINNING?!?!?!?!?!?!

  • I'm listening to it to remember the form of the song

  • f*ck!ng gr8 man! congratulations ! love this song

  • Thanks dude

  • That was a fantastic tribute to one of my favorite S.D. songs...

You are ready to bless the track on a grand piano my friend. Please do.

  • Haha thanks, I certainly would if I had an opportunity! Thanks for the kind words :)

  • thats really good =] i love this song, ur really talented. i play sax, i wish i knew the sax solo!

  • Thanks! Its a great solo isn't it

  • O.o omg are you doing that AS IT PLAYS?!!? you freak of nature!! -in a nice way. O.o......... wooooah

  • Totally amazing !!! U rok

  • Thankyou! :)

  • Hmm sorry about the crap sound on this one - very thin-sounding. I edited the sound to make it less boxy but the YT processing has obv filtered almost everything but the high frequencies.
