@redshadowsword Neil is a preacher not a God. I hope he continues to preach the importance of scientific literacy over blind faith for years to come. And hopefully he'll get a little more open about his disbelief in God like Dawkins has done. The more respected scientists there are who are willing to reveal their true beliefs the better the world will become. Religion always remains a taboo subject for most people. Until people get more open to new and rational ideas, the world isn't changing.

@redshadowsword Dude atheism is for dummies who want to know it all. NO ONE knows rather there is a god or not and it is arrogant and idiotic to say that you do.
@gtas321 First of all, what I said was joke so get over it. Second, nowhere did i say that i claim to know if there is a God. As an atheist, I don't BELIEVE in the God because there is no proof of God. True, there is NO proof that there is no God, but there is also no proof that there is no leprechauns, fairies, or boogeymen. You most likely do not believe in them....so why would you believe in God which has just as much probability of existing as little winged people that live in meadow.
@redshadowsword Of course you would regurgitate one of Dawkin's arguments. When will atheists learn to make up their OWN arguments..
Comparing god to that of fairy tales that we can track to their roots and dispose of, or even go out and prove for ourselves, is not comparable to the existence of god. And I am scientific deist, the god that I believe in is a hell of a lot more likely to exist than a person with wings...
@gtas321 Due to the fact that i would rather not waste time arguing with you, I propose a we call a truce. There is no way you will get me to accept your point of view, and vise versa. Let us leave it at that. I bid you good day and at this point will politely exclude myself from any further conversation with you.
@gtas321 Religion is for people who want to "know" it all. As an athiest I don't need to "know" it all the lazy way. I accept there are things I can't explain and I don't just chalk it up to an all powerful being that must have created it. Maybe it is what it is, and that's all it is. Religion=control and gives people a meaning when there is no meaning. I wish I did believe because it seems so much easier and convenient than not believing in a god or omnipotent power.

Heavenly Father, we thank you for the encouragement that we receive from your word. It always ministers to us in ways that we need. Your word lifts us up when we are down and humbles us when we become too high minded. Lord, again we thank you for your word. In Jesus' name... Amen.

@UberREDKitteh Most preachers are passionate about what they do to. Usually they aren't that bright. Neil is probably pretty smart. Nontheless when he makes a corny sentence like he did i still think he deserves to be laughed at, just like the preachers deserve it on such occasions. I definetely don't like his attitude either. He definetely oozes cocky "humbleness" like i mentioned before.
I have never been so touched and felt like I am greater than when I heard the words starting at 9:07 Science is my religion and Neil deGrasse Tyson is my Pastor.
Yep, it's true. A good appreciation of astrophysics is really good for putting the proper perspective on things. It should humble people to realise how incredibly small and insigificant we are.
I am Black, and I have to ask a question. The question is, "Why do Black people hail Cornel West as a groundbreaking intellectual while this man, Neil DeGrasse Tyson, walks the Earth?" This man is my hero! Neil is the real deal and an inspiration. Cornel West is an overrated double talker. For the human race to survive, religion has to fade away.
@finan03 "i wish this man could have more of a political influence on the usa."

@ViXoN2 I do not care about color. I was commenting on the negative side of a culture I am very familiar with because I was raised in it. Being very familiar with that culture; I observed that many Blacks in this country do not even know who Tyson is. I feel this is the direct result of being taught to respect double talkers with no scientific background like West.I admire Tyson and feel the Black community should give him more press. This would influence the next generation of children.
@ViXoN2 There was nothing in the comment you commented on that indicated I actually care about race. Mentioning the race was the way of be very specific about the group I was referring to.The group I am from.I know, from experience, that the unwarranted reverence for religion and double talking theists is contributing to the lack of progression in the community I am from.
@7A35 West's ideas are definitely what one might call "out there," but he and Dr. Robert George (also from Princeton) have done three panel discussions at my school in recent years, and West is absolutely hilarious. A guffawingly funny man.
@7A35 Statistics show the higher the standard of education the less likely to believe in a sky fairy, apparently the human rae is getting smarter around 3 IQ points per decade as quoted by Michael Shermer, so we should se religion slowly phase out.
@ZukefliJohan Have you seen the quote that says if every atheist left the US, America would lose 93% of it's Nat. Academy of Science but only 1% of prison population?
I think Dawkins may have mentioned that, funny also when he mentioned members of congress that admit they are atheist, one or two I think, which is statistically almost impossible, sort of showing people lie a lot about their faith to fit in.
I wonder how many normal people do that so not to dissapoint their family?
@NarlepoaxIII here you go, no counter examples but sure go ahead and attack me personally, great job I guess you learn that from the bible and Jesus LOL
It's not that I don't have any, it's that I have hundreds, and all of them would be too complicated to explain to someone as steeped in hatred as you.
The 5:14 astronomical image of outer space resembles to me at least the uncanny face of a beautiful woman. The smeared blue conceals all except for a right eye.
I LOVE IT :) DNA has proven our connection to one another to and Neil DeGrasse Tyson has also proven what else were made of. NOW if you believe the bible that's cool to whatever floats your boat because it says were made from dust, or clay and isn't clay dust and water in a scene.
to ZaXJQuiX (where did that handle come from?)...the term used is "religious NUT"...wish it could be "fixed"!...guess it's one of the dilemmas facing the fact that we're humans!...or do you prefer some form of oppression, repression to "fix" it...I am sure a Hitler or Stalin could!...
@LindavG "Is Neil deGrasse Tyson an atheist or a pantheist?"
I'd say it doesn't matter much; most likely he's an atheist by most definitions or interpretations of that word. As long as he is open to new evidence/observations and not fixed by some old religious text or "divine truth", and uses reason-based inquiry methods to back up his search for knowledge, he's ok with me. But my guess is he'd label himself a plain atheist, with appreciation for the magnificence of the universe.
Life without religion is not empty or scary. It is bigger, more astounding, more beautiful than anything religion has claimed and more importantly, it's the truth. We've outgrown religion, we no longer need it to unlock the part of our brains which that same feels shuddering awe.
"These talks about astrophysics bring me more into Islam by each progressing day :)"
Funnily enough, for others, these very same talks about astrophysics turn away people from religions such as Christianity and Islam...I guess people take what they want from it :)
All national institutions of churches, whether Jewish, Christian or Turkish, appear to me no other than human inventions, set up to terrify and enslave mankind, and monopolize power and profit.
Sometimes, the thoughts from Tyson'll pop into my head whilst I'm walking outside and looking outside (I can see them because I live in the country). I'll look up, and I'll remember that I'm part of this beautiful community we all live in, the community we call the universe, and I'll choke up simply from the majesty and beauty of it all. No religion will ever muster such a realization of wonder like science and knowledge; because I know it's true.
Neil deGrasse Tyson - "OUR COLLECTIVE FREE TIME NEEDS TO SHIFT AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE TO EDUCATION. WHETHER YOU'RE A YOUNG STUDENT OR FINISHED SCHOOL LONG AGO, GET OUT TO THE LIBRARY WHENEVER YOU CAN AND WORK HARD TO LEARN EVERYTHING YOU CAN ABOUT THIS WORLD. EACH INDIVIDUAL AND SOCIETY WILL BENEFIT FROM BEING ABLE TO SOLVE MORE PROBLEMS AND MAKE BETTER DECISIONS. EDUCATION IS AN AMAZING DISCOVERY PROCESS THAT REPAYS YOU ENDLESSLY."
Now if this was taught in a classrooms today, just think how advanced we would be as a species, rather than the corrosive and primitive explanations of religion today.
To those saying that religion and science should respect each other. That sounds all well and good in theory, but when it comes down to it. When science advances and more discoveries are made and the textbooks have more info added to them and/or are rewritten and updated. There seems to be some religious nut trying to stop that from happening, claiming that its all wrong and attacking science. If you want respect to happen, look at fixing the church first.
@ZaXJQuiX good point. I am a non-believer but always sort of appreciated the fact that even the ultra conservative catholic church in the last 30 years or so (under pope John Paul II) really embraced science when the goal was the search for truth (ie; evolution, space exploration, quantam mechanics, the age of the earth, fossil record). Why the baptists and evangelicals and other christian groups are so opposed to the pursuit of knowledge is quite the conundrum.
@daledaddy1 The Catholic Church accepted Evolution long before the past 30 years. However the current Pope has declared Scientists should have faith in God, or something to that effect. Officially the catholic church is yet ready to embrace science or other worldly evidence unconditionally. The church is still say condoms don't prevent the transmission of STD, when they clearly do when used.
@daledaddy1 "I [..] sort of appreciated the fact that even the ultra conservative catholic church in the last 30 years [..] embraced science when the goal was the search for truth"
It could be just a fad, or perhaps the church is embarassed over how Christianity has dealt with people doing open inquiry in the past and wanted to make things right for once. In any case I agree, it's a good thing if they accept some parts of reality, even though they still have many delusions.
@ZaXJQuiX Look up Neil deGrasse Tyson on Science and Faith, he addresses this issue himself, and reminds up its a very small portion of people who feel threatened or want to attack science. And also that 40% of scientists are religious, and are able to co-exist in both world absolutely fine.
@KarazhanIsCake I like what you said. Wouldn't it be lovely if everyone did respect eachother and these forums were a place where everyone could come to speak of ideas and learn from everyone else instead of being like my parents house at thanksgiving with all the pointless arguing and fighting.
All of the arguing is wrong. There is no reason to bash religion or science. Respect one another, accept that these people are different and let's reach the stars, for one reason or another, with or with the help of each other.
@KarazhanIsCake It's the problem side of religion that's wrong. We don't care if people need their religion to feel good, but if they need it to kill other people and hold back science and distort the research that's being done, then they definitely needs to be confronted. Ignorance can never be good.
@luvtrails There's no waste here. I've seen and experianced miracles. Just this month I had a blood enzyme level 20 times higher than normal, and was losing masss rapidly. But a day after being prayed over, a test showed my levels were perfect. This is just one of many times God has pulled me out of trouble, and just knowing that He gives me purpose gives me the strength to live.
And what drugs were you prescribed to combat your illness? You may think it is harmless to believe that your recovery you due to the mercy of your god, but I believe it is an insult to both your doctor and the entire science of medicine. Another thought, if your god cured you, who made you sick in the first place.
@4dojo so what. prayer has been proven to do nothing. there have been studies on the effects of prayer on hospital patients and it shows that the people prayed for don't get healthy anymore than the people who weren't prayed for. how arrogant of you to think the creator of the universe intervened on your behalf and saved you meanwhile there are people suffering and children born starving to death all over the globe. wake up moron
@nilbog44 But you cannot expertiment on people who are prayed for over people who are not. The people praying would only be doing it as an experiment, rather than as a servant of God, who is not a vending machine. Indeed, I have been healed through prayer and I'm one of countless others.
@4dojo you don't know what "healed" you; you are just assuming it's prayer- you have no evidence. People are always using words like god and prayer to explain things they cannot- just be a MAN and admit: you don't know what the hell is going on, or what happens when we die.
You, like ALL humans, are AGNOSTIC. YOu do not know.
Believing in a god is boring. Believing in the universe is much more exciting and interesting. I think George Carlin said it best, "It doesn't punish, it doesn't reward, it doesn't judge at all. It just is. And so are we. For a little while."

@redshadowsword Neil is a preacher not a God. I hope he continues to preach the importance of scientific literacy over blind faith for years to come. I wonder how many normal people do that so not to dissapoint their family?

ZaXJQuiX 4 months ago 76
@ZaXJQuiX good point. I am a non-believer but always sort of appreciated the fact that even the ultra conservative catholic church in the last 30 years or so (under pope John Paul II) really embraced science when the goal was the search for truth (ie; evolution, space exploration, quantam mechanics, the age of the earth, fossil record). Why the baptists and evangelicals and other christian groups are so opposed to the pursuit of knowledge is quite the conundrum.
daledaddy1 3 months ago
@daledaddy1 The Catholic Church accepted Evolution long before the past 30 years. However the current Pope has declared Scientists should have faith in God, or something to that effect. Officially the catholic church is yet ready to embrace science or other worldly evidence unconditionally. The church is still say condoms don't prevent the transmission of STD, when they clearly do when used.
waswestkan 2 months ago
@daledaddy1 "I [..] sort of appreciated the fact that even the ultra conservative catholic church in the last 30 years [..] embraced science when the goal was the search for truth"
It could be just a fad, or perhaps the church is embarassed over how Christianity has dealt with people doing open inquiry in the past and wanted to make things right for once. In any case I agree, it's a good thing if they accept some parts of reality, even though they still have many delusions.
0debug 3 weeks ago
@ZaXJQuiX Look up Neil deGrasse Tyson on Science and Faith, he addresses this issue himself, and reminds up its a very small portion of people who feel threatened or want to attack science. And also that 40% of scientists are religious, and are able to co-exist in both world absolutely fine.

All of the arguing is wrong. There is no reason to bash religion or science. Respect one another, accept that these people are different and let's reach the stars, for one reason or another, with or with the help of each other.
KarazhanIsCake 4 months ago
@KarazhanIsCake It's the problem side of religion that's wrong. We don't care if people need their religion to feel good, but if they need it to kill other people and hold back science and distort the research that's being done, then they definitely needs to be confronted. Ignorance can never be good.

And what drugs were you prescribed to combat your illness? You may think it is harmless to believe that your recovery you due to the mercy of your god, but I believe it is an insult to both your doctor and the entire science of medicine. Another thought, if your god cured you, who made you sick in the first place.
justinsgil185 4 months ago

@4dojo so what. prayer has been proven to do nothing. there have been studies on the effects of prayer on hospital patients and it shows that the people prayed for don't get healthy anymore than the people who weren't prayed for. how arrogant of you to think the creator of the universe intervened on your behalf and saved you meanwhile there are people suffering and children born starving to death all over the globe. wake up moron
nilbog44 4 months ago
@nilbog44 But you cannot expertiment on people who are prayed for over people who are not. The people praying would only be doing it as an experiment, rather than as a servant of God, who is not a vending machine. Indeed, I have been healed through prayer and I'm one of countless others.
4dojo 4 months ago
@4dojo you don't know what "healed" you; you are just assuming it's prayer- you have no evidence. People are always using words like god and prayer to explain things they cannot- just be a MAN and admit: you don't know what the hell is going on, or what happens when we die.
You, like ALL humans, are AGNOSTIC. YOu do not know.
Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
