I prefer Persona 3 and 4 because I like the social links and Personas in general, but this game is still great. Not finished it yet, but looking forward to it.
Shin Megami Tensei games beat any FF anytime. I liked the first few FF games but Shin Megami Tensei always looked badass. Exccept for the Persona 3 and 4. Persona 2 Innocent Sin keeps being my favourite.

How do I keep my demons with me in this game? I want to keep certain demons but they level up really slowly and I find demons who are just naturally at a higher level.
@Owlleen You can't, you have to fuse them at the Cathedral of Shadows. You can inherit skills to fused demons, but trying to keep the same demons through the whole game isn't productive.
I know its not the case - but so far while I play through it - I cant shake the feeling this is the remains of Tatsuya's world from innocent sin; esp. with some of the vague refrences about "a man that travelled to another world~"

@Rubytyr It has nothing to do with the Persona series. Persona is like a side series and SMT is the main. Most of this is linked to the former SMT games and theres references in this one even linked with the old one. It's assumed that even one character is the main character from SMT 1 who did the "Unforgivable Sin" and he has to keep coming back living through hell with there being nothing he can do about it.
I still want to understand why SMT,Persona,DS or DDS,or even any Atlus video,are full of FF/S-E haters.....you're guys are almost as annoying as Sonic fanboys. -__-

@KeeperOTDH2 Definitely. It's one of the best RPGs on the PS2, if not the best, at least in my eyes. It's thought-provoking, difficult, varied, and epic in both the ancient and modern senses of the word.
It's not for everyone, though. When Hard mode is described as "a difficulty level suitable for one seeking the thrill of death," it means it. I died to the Hard Mode TUTORIAL BATTLE. TWICE. If you can take the lumps and learn from your mistakes, though, it's great fun.
@MyHumanLife I live in Belgium, so maybe that makes a difference. I must say it was a used game, but who cares, there's no difference between new and used, used is just cheaper.

Love the game and its corresponding parts; though I ended up playing them in reverse. (first game in the SMT series that I played was Nocturne, then DDS I and II)
Overall i'd say it is a beautiful game. Great graphics for their time, amazing (and original) stories; and great deal of reference to multiple different mythologies. In my opinion this game is one of the best games that I've ever played and the best things about the game were the sound-track and story
I like how in Nocturne the main character just never gives a fuck. He fights anything in his way for no reason. The Matador shows up and is like, "You are a fiend like me! Let us have a duel!" The Maincharacter isn't like, "Woah Woah, let's talk this out." he says, "..." and murders him relentlessly.
@BakuTex Yup. The story is that one of the staff members thought it would be great to include Dante in Nocturne since he would essentially fit into the demon themed game. So they presented the idea to capcom and they agreed to it with one condition. Kazuma Kaneko, the one who does the art for the megaten games, had to draw the devil trigger forms for Dante and Virgil in DMC3, which he did. lol

But I wasn't even talking about that, I am talking about my opinion when it comes to these two franchises. Everything from the Storyline, Art Direction, SImple yet hard to master Gameplay, etc. All of that make this game just perfect for me.
@paulman34340 I hope it is the first 2. The first 2 games are my favorite because Masuko composed them. I happen to like all of the games that he did for Atlus and for the Shin Megami Tensei series along with Hideto Aoki before Shoji Meguro took over.
The only sound track I liked from Shoji Meguro was Strange Journey.

@dzsidu Agree with the first one, disagree with the second. Just because Persona is the mainstream ATLUS game doesn't mean it is mainstream overall. It just has a cult following and there ARE Persona fans who adore Nocturne. Persona is just easier to get into.
I had played some of the other SMT games but this one had to be one of my favorites so far. I love how dark this one is. Playing P3 or any of the later ones, doesn't account to how well this one was made. In a lot of ways, it's similar to Devil Summoner.... I don't know which one came out first... Hmm...
Still, a must game to play for any true RPG style players.

Story-wise, Dante was hired by the wheelchair-bound man (1:01) to hunt down several powerful Fiends, including the player character.
IRL, some staff member at Atlus was a big DMC fan: in exchange for putting Dante in the game, the character designer for SMT drew the designs for Dante and Vergil's Devil Trigger forms.
Tried playing this game..dear god, I couldn't get through that underground passage near Ginza. This game does not forgive, and takes no prisoners. If you are in any way unsure what the hell you're doing, you'll get ripped to shreds.

@TClaymore yeah, in digital devil saga. his appearance reinforced my theory. Why ?, because base on the following factors,I think :
1-the battle obviously happens in the Labyrinth of Amala or the Amala network,mean that the demifiend is grinding LV before facing lucifer (base on the dying message second line),hence his possible defeat.
2-nomal battle theme mean they randomly met in the Amala.
3-the last line in the dying message :"All bent to my will" obviously mean he just start over the game.

I'm so glad they used a cel shading technique in Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga the games look just as beautiful today on my HDTV because of it. The same with Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter. I wish they had made more of the same instead of the Persona and Devil Summoner games.
I prefer this game because it's darker and have a serious story.
Persona is something more light and for teenagers(i am one but i still prefer this one),that's why there are more ppl who likes Persona more than the actual SMT series.

We seriously need more Shin Megami Tensei games on PS3, or at least PSP. So far all we've gotten are Persona and Persona 3 remakes with I think a Persona 2 remake on the way.

guys dont worry i discovered this game recently.the first smt game that i played was persona4.after that i played devil survivor.next strange journey.next persona3FES.next nocturne.and i downloaded devil summoner but i havent started it yet.the same goes with dds.smt games are better than pokemon in the terms of everything.im a fan of pokemon but i like smt better.to tell you the truth pokemon now are boring as hell.just to play these games i would give my soul to lucifer.
@Koisanjie yes you can buy it from the Us stores.but if you cant find it download the game from snesorama.just type nocturne snesorama.the proccess is a little long but its worth it.after you download it you can play it with the pcsx2 emu and it doesnt lag at all.in case it lags just ask me to send you my pcsx config.i hope i helped

@Jimster185 In exchange for the fact that Kaneko drew the Devil Trigger designs in DMC3, Capcom allowed Atlus to put Dante into Nocturne as part of the Nocturne Maniacs edition release in order to promote and popularize the game. We only got the Maniacs version.

One of the team was a huge fan of Devil May Cry, and convinced the Nocturne team to ask Capcom for permission to use Dante in their updated rerelease of Nocturne, which was the version that made it stateside. Capcom agreed, in exchange for character and demon designer Kazuma Kaneko's services in designing Dante and Vergil's Devil Triggers in Devil May Cry 3. And now you know!

Of the PS2 SMT games, this is by far the best, with P3 in 2nd place (along with P4 if you like P3, since they're pretty similar), and the devil summoner series in 3rd (devil summoner has the cool style, and nice story, but kind of bland gameplay...) with digital devil saga being terrible enough that I shouldn't even mention it :D In my experience, you should like this game way more... The only thing is that it is, as jrpgs go, fairly difficult.
@ashleeldixon you'll probably like this game alot, its like a way darker version of persona 4 (well thats a bad comparison, imo its on a level of its own....)

I don't actually play SMT so could somebody tell me why is Dante from DMC in this?

@TheLiidu Dante is part demon and if I remember right you can recruit him or fight him or both I dont remember. Capcom gave them rights to put him in otherwise he wouldnt make an appearance

Story-wise, Dante was hired by the wheelchair-bound man (1:01) to hunt down several powerful Fiends, including the player character.
IRL, some staff member at Atlus was a big DMC fan: in exchange for putting Dante in the game, the character designer for SMT drew the designs for Dante and Vergil's Devil Trigger forms.

Tried playing this game..dear god, I couldn't get through that underground passage near Ginza. This game does not forgive, and takes no prisoners. If you are in any way unsure what the hell you're doing, you'll get ripped to shreds.

There's always flame in SMT videos, WTF people?! The entire franchise is awesome, just because you like one game more than other doenst mean the others are crap, and you people are really making flame about SMTvsPersona?
Just enjoy the games, geez, but the probality of those guys continue with their infinite "battle" is more high than I expect. And while you do that, I will continue to play my favorite games from the series (SMT III, DS and P4).

Nocturne is one of the best rpg of ps2!
Along with Dragon Quest VIII, Shadow Hearts 2,Persona 4 and Tales of the Abyss.
King Abaddon and the DDSs were great too.

Good question. I have two theories:
1. It's Hijiri (0:53) recording his experiences in the Vortex World
2. It's the record of someone from another world who survived that plane's Conception and escaped into the "main" game world. His journal became a piece of occult lore, part history, part prophecy.
It's actually very possible that both theories are true - get far enough into Amala and you'll see why.

@TClaymore nice theory, however, seeing the neutral ending came before the true demon ending (which many believe to be canon) and consider every character personality.I believe the neutral ending to be canon. seriously,how the hell do you turn completely demon at heart and follow Lucifer just because you fought a few fiend that come out of nowere.jeez,did the angels kill his girlfriend,NO! .and don't forget Dante,we all known that Dante is a nice guy.

@TClaymore yeah, in digital devil saga. his appearance reinforced my theory. Why ?, because base on the following factors,I think :
1-the battle obviously happens in the Labyrinth of Amala or the Amala network,mean that the demifiend is grinding LV before facing lucifer (base on the dying message second line),hence his possible defeat.
2-nomal battle theme mean they randomly met in the Amala.
3-the last line in the dying message :"All bent to my will" obviously mean he just start over the game.

I'm so glad they used a cel shading technique in Nocturne and Digital Devil Saga the games look just as beautiful today on my HDTV because of it. The same with Breath of Fire Dragon Quarter. I wish they had made more of the same instead of the Persona and Devil Summoner games.

Depends of the taste.
I prefer this game because it's darker and have a serious story.
Persona is something more light and for teenagers(i am one but i still prefer this one),that's why there are more ppl who likes Persona more than the actual SMT series.

guys dont worry i discovered this game recently.the first smt game that i played was persona4.after that i played devil survivor.next strange journey.next persona3FES.next nocturne.and i downloaded devil summoner but i havent started it yet.the same goes with dds.smt games are better than pokemon in the terms of everything.im a fan of pokemon but i like smt better.to tell you the truth pokemon now are boring as hell.just to play these games i would give my soul to lucifer.

@Koisanjie yes you can buy it from the Us stores.but if you cant find it download the game from snesorama.just type nocturne snesorama.the proccess is a little long but its worth it.after you download it you can play it with the pcsx2 emu and it doesnt lag at all.in case it lags just ask me to send you my pcsx config.i hope i helped

@Jimster185 In exchange for the fact that Kaneko drew the Devil Trigger designs in DMC3, Capcom allowed Atlus to put Dante into Nocturne as part of the Nocturne Maniacs edition release in order to promote and popularize the game. We only got the Maniacs version.

One of the team was a huge fan of Devil May Cry, and convinced the Nocturne team to ask Capcom for permission to use Dante in their updated rerelease of Nocturne, which was the version that made it stateside. Capcom agreed, in exchange for character and demon designer Kazuma Kaneko's services in designing Dante and Vergil's Devil Triggers in Devil May Cry 3. And now you know!

Of the PS2 SMT games, this is by far the best, with P3 in 2nd place (along with P4 if you like P3, since they're pretty similar), and the devil summoner series in 3rd (devil summoner has the cool style, and nice story, but kind of bland gameplay...) with digital devil saga being terrible enough that I shouldn't even mention it :D In my experience, you should like this game way more... The only thing is that it is, as jrpgs go, fairly difficult.
