  • I like the steam locomotives from the Nickel Plate Road. They have a basic design and they don't look too crowded unlike other steamers with smoke deflectors, air compressors on the front of the boiler, and big and bulky builds.

  • They did a REALLY GOOD movie about 587 where some kids save her from scrap. I wish it was YT.

  • I'm not sure if a lot of people know this, but there is an effort dedicated to restoring another Nickel Plate Mikado in the form of NKP 624.

  • I am very suprise that the 587 will be back soon. It seems like the people who made the movie 587 The Great Train Robbery need to remaster the movie and release it again to have the 587 known again. Every time i watch the movie i think of the 587.

  • With that, I wish the Indiana Transportation Museum the best of luck in keeping NKP #587 in good working order. And also, I did enjoy seeing this locomotive in action on DVD.

  • Great video but it would have been better without that idiot Mike Mettert. He was one of the three stooges that dropped the engine when raising it to service the front pilot bearings...thanks mike...you moron. The best thing that could happen for this loco is for you to stay away.

  • This engine IS a 2-8-2 Mike. and it will be back before 2017, mark my words.

  • by the way the tender now is from a lima mikado not lima berkshire. the tender is from one of the 600 series mikados.

  • but the tender is identical to the ones used on the berks. You gonna try and say that all berk tenders are mike tenders?

  • the tender is not identical to the berks tenders. the berks carry 22 tons of coal not 20 tons the 600 used the 20 ton tenders which were built at lima but the tenders are not the same. remember 587 is a light mike and the 600 were not a light model and were made later

  • @yerkees9891 yes i will say there not the same the reason is lima made 600 serious engine which were actually order by NKP unlike 587 was and the tender on 587 right now is the one used on the 600 serious locomotives trust me i have a good comparison i work on both 587 and 765 so i know the difference between the 2 tenders

  • while the 765 did the new river and double heading the 1225 the nickel plate DID A TRIPLE HEADER IN THE FRONT OF TWO N & W ENGINES

  • So now I'm curious. How far along is the re-build? I just read some comment that they are riveting the boiler? How much work is left to do? I wish I lived closer. I'm in South Bend and would love to spen some weekends doind what I could to help.

  • Yes, so far they are riveting the boiler. There really isnt mych riveting left to do, but if you came down I'm sure you could find some sort of job to fix her up! Never is there boredom while volunteering at the ITM.

  • They made a movie and used her as the star. The movie is called 587: The Great Train robbery.

  • i wonder what engine the tender was from

  • My understanding is that it's off a scrapped Berk. Does look pretty out of place, eh?

  • Railroad switched tenders all the time.

  • This tender is from NKP 639, which is still here.

  • 587 is a 2-8-2.

  • ohh i loove the whistle a lot.

at around 4:23 the trains lerches a lot on the rails...its sorta scary to see it do that.

  • Excellent video!!

  • 736berkshire in 2002 nickle plate road 587 made a final run. Now how was it least back in service in 2005?

  • The 587 is not back in service. The 765 is.

  • Comment removed

  • Me and mrbassfisherman are volunteers at The Indiana Transportation Museum. Our contractor has put in over 400 hours of service on the locomotive since April. Currently they are replacing Firebox Sheets. They work from dawn to dusk and are really working hard on it. If all goes as planeed it will be pressureized this fall, not move but it will be to see if everything is working right. They keep pushing back the return to service date, but this year they are working hard so you never know.

  • i got to see you guys. i basically worship the 587. what was the 587s whistle in 1988. but now i have marhcin g band at hamsilton southeastern high school.

  • I'm pretty sure its the same. The whistle got a crack in it that kept progressing so the sound changed. or so I heard. Thats cool. I'm doing marching band for my school as well. It takes up a lot of time,

  • thetrainking, you said you volunteer at the ITM, ever met a Jacob there? hes a new guy over there and comes out ever other couple of weeks, although he hasnt been there in about 5 weeks

  • I might of met a Jacob, I've been there the past few weekends.

  • I think he's coming this weekend, I'll have to contact him! I went there sunday thru the member gates and had forgotten that 587 was over the pit getting rivets in front of the boiler with a wheel dropped! I had completely forgoten it!

  • Wow. it's been like that for a while now. lol. I watched them put rivets in for two hours one weekend. lol. There is so much skill in riveting.

  • Yeah, I'm sure there is lots of skill in that.

  • Jacob broke his arm.

  • you forget me!

  • i think 2011

  • @tracksidefan when did 765 return to steam? the year

  • NKP 765 returned to steam in October 2005 with trial runs the following March.

  • @tracksidefan did 765 make any runs in 07 or 08

  • @Strasburg1991: None that I am aware of. I think it took awhile to get the financials and logistics back up to speed after the engine was done.

  • Lol I'm not I'd be videotaping the whole time. I'd just go to see it all. I'll be 18 in September

  • hey thetrainking and we just received a few parts for our steamers so its going to be OK so lets just learn to get along ok?

  • how long does a upload take?

  • I plan to do something along those lines, since I live about 45 minutes away from Scranton

  • yea

  • I agree with you to a point. If I see a lot of DL locomotives, I'd be pissed too. But if they have that Susquehanna E9 unit, the Erie E8 unit, the Juniata Terminal Pennsylvania E8 units and Lackawanna E8 units, I wont complain

  • That's depressing. You could always transport it by truck haha

  • It would be awesome to see 587 at the 2010 Convention. It could do a double header with CN #3254. A Mikado Double-Header

  • aw, not in time for the 2010 Convention? That would be awesome in the steamtown roundhouse to see 759 and 587 side by side. Maybe throw 765 in the mix?

  • no wonder the tender's the same size as the engine. its a berk tender

  • I'm very sorry that CSX banned steam!

  • I played on this thing as a kid when it sat in the park. I've been on trains it pulled twice since it's restoration. I am looking forward to them completing this job.

  • o and i wanna check out the museum

  • how you doing trainking?

  • lol im related to steamers

  • hey thetrainking can u give me the loco after its rebiuld?

  • Same thing for the 1522.

  • lol i want it to run again but whats the 1522?

  • hey 736berkshire can we borrow the 1522 instead of the 587?

  • lol i can drive it ill prove it!

  • At least it was least it was back in service in 2005.

  • ya lol i seen too SD40-2s doublehead to seattle and it was cool it had a former CSX SD40-2 and a former AT&SF SD40-2

  • lol you better notice we would not destroy the thing in a heartbeat we like steamers around the world xD

  • lol screw the FBI we will take America to ruins if you and the ITm Just give us the 587 or we will take it ourselves or ill keep you blocked from my channel permanlty if you dont unblock ur banned

  • lol 911 cannot do Australia u idiot

  • lol this loco reminds me everyday i see it and please let us have it so i can be reminded of my old life of steam and i have a obsseion with steam and i was the engineer for 587!

  • lol if you and the ITM let us have the 587 we will let you have our 2-8-2 steam loco

  • but if we had the 587 we would be a caring country for this locomotive we want it if we have it we wont kill obama so this is your last warning give us the 587 or we kill obama

  • but our steamers have broken down so we need the 587 for the Aussies or we will kill obama if u guys dont give the Aussies the locomotive

  • but the australian steam fest would make more money if we had the 587 in it every1 will love it but if thats a locomotive i want then give it to australia or we kill ur president or else so we need locomotives like this all we have r shitty australian steam locos but there are less people at our steam fest so please let us have the 587 please oh please give it to us we wont kill obama if u do give it to us Signed starbster.

  • first of all, 587 is in america. It's not going overseas.

  • thetrainking is it ok if i borrow the 587?

  • but i wanna buy the 587 and the volnnteers is that ok to let me buy the 587?

  • 587 or 765?

  • to the ITM can i borrow Nickel PLate Road 587 please?

  • and i want to buy Nickel Plate Road 587

  • lol Baldwin built 2-8-4s too and the 10 yr old kid in the movie drove the engine

  • but its sad that it was nearly scrap metal and i miss the 587 steam locomotive and why were steam locomotives scrapped at he and of thier era?

  • lol this loco was made in 1963 and this steam engine was driven by the first kid to never derail a train and he was 10 yrs old and the driver told him how and i got to take it down the tracks in new york!

  • No, this loco was built as L E & W 5541 and in 1924 was changed to NKP 587.

  • lol i want this loclmotive

  • That was very unnecessary! There's a way to make a point without using obscene language!!!

  • My name is Richard, moved to HollyHill, FL. 16 yrs ago. I worked at ITM 23 yrs ago with Craig Prestler, Les McConnel annnnnd, oh yea Jackie! What a great bunch of folks I really miss. I'm working w/ the city of HollyHill to establish a RR museum here but It's been slow due to the economy. The museum will feature FEC, ACL & SAL I frequently rave about the FEC no 90 Il'll be sending ITM some info about the museum soon.

  • Thats cool. Me and another member gave a tour of the 90 just this weekend.

  • When can she pull mainline excursion trains again?

  • Great whistle!

  • nice 2-8-2

  • I believe this loco. was starred in a film? If so I loved it as a child but cannot remember the title.

  • 587 great train roberey

  • 587 great train roberey

  • i told u it was a 2-8-4 they r fast and powerful

  • its not a 2-8-4. It has a 2-8-4 tender

  • It's not a Berk! It has a berk tender because NKP 639 needed a operational tender(which 587 had) and they switched them.

  • Unfortunatly it won't. They are restoring it and I believe it will be up and running next season, 2009. BUT CSX in their infinite wisdom pulled some track connections in Indianapolis that have probably permenatly severed the ITM and the NKP 587 from the outside Rail world forever. :(

  • I hate CSX's attitude torwards steam.

  • screw CSX

  • Why did CSX take that track out?

  • There is a possible connection going in soon, watch carefully for news concerning CSX and Eli Lilly

  • Can they restored NKP #587 to operational again so it can team up with SP #4449?

  • I hope #587 will team up with SP #4449 soon in the future!

  • Just visited the museum on 7/24. Even though it wasn't open, I was allowed to photograph the equipment by some very friendly volunteers. See link via my profile. This is a wonderful little museum set in a really nice city park. I plan to return and take a ride. Nice job guys, can't wait for 587 to return to steam!

  • I was there on that day!!!!!!

  • and it was saved by kids! i love the 587! good luck 587!

  • didnt the 587 star in a movie "587 the great train robbery"?

  • yes. the museum also starred in a movie " Going all the Way" about two men coming from St. Louis to Indianapolis in the 50's.

  • I miss her I miss her I miss her, she was the star and beauty of the itm and her whistle made me cry she has been locked up for over 5 years and I want her back and running so I can hear her whistle again! SHE WILL NOT DIE!

  • Last Saturday (opening day at the ITM) the employees let me inside the repair shed. It's covered in rust, but it will live on. I believe it!

  • Nice big museum steamtrain, mutch bigger then the dutch museum steamers in myn area.

    Cool

  • Lovely Whistle

She looks like a USRA Light Mike
