  • Education is a big part, but it's not just about the education. It's the rich experience and the opportunities that you get.

  • i notice that those who say ivy league schools don't provide the best educations are those that cannot get into them.

  • @rockerboy64 -- I got into one of them. I can tell you from first-hand experience that they don't offer the best education. Once again, you must first have a strong and specific academic interest that is best be served by a strong academic department. Once you identify 4-5 such departments, the choice of college or university is the SECOND most important decision -- not the first.

If one first seeks to be a scholar, the Ivies are seen in their proper place.

  • One more comment: Focusing on departments rather than schools makes

differences standout. For example: Dartmouth College's liberal arts departments

are just plain bad -- according to any measure. Compare them to the same

department at a good state university, and Old State beats Dartmouth hands-down. The Ivies simply don't offer the best education. Neither do they offer the best 'pedigree' -- any school that has a serious alumni following will help you just as much as an Ivy on your resume.

  • If one is going to be honest about things, trying to get into the Ivies is not about

desiring the best education. Most people are motivated to go to the Ivies, I think,

for pretty ugly and selfish reasons.

If one desires *the best education*, then the question is not really about which

school one should attend, but which *department* one should enter. The

decision about 'which school' then comes into its rightful second place in the

    analysis.

  • @36outof50 The standards for these schools far outweigh many of your normal school.

  • @dp9eagle13

Not true. At least half of every Ive League class, in my opinion, is admitted based on something OTHER than academic scores and class rank.

Moreover, for every high-GPA student admitted, about 5 or more students with a similar or HIGHER GPA is rejected. Also, the 'standards' issue is sort of a moot point, is it not? The fact remains that a better education can be had elsewhere for many of the departments in Ivy-league schools.

  • @36outof50 The point is that the individual that places his hopes in solely ivy league schools would surely become bitter. Greatness is within a person and not in ivy league schools. The only problem is that society has become so competitive that people easily feel a sense of not belonging when they dont gratify their dreams of not enrolling in ivy league institutions like YALE, HAVARD, CORNELL, PRINCETON, U PENN AND COLUMBIA. In conclusion education is borrowed knowledge.

  • We should just make all universities like the ivies, teach students to zox, and then we would have a real education system as opposed to what is being sold to the world as education.

  • @iZ0x Dont be terrified buddy! We do have good education systems. The standard of text books used in these Ivy league schools are similar to those use in for profit schools like Ashford Devry and others. Always remember that it is not where you go but how productive you become. If you take a critical look at the big corporations you can easily conclude that the executives that went to these league schools are the ones that cause financial malfeasance in most cases.

  • @tamale8861YOU"RE RIGHT they cause financial fiascos as one professor told us b/c we are so smart we have the most potential of screwing up the world lol an "evil genius" I guess one could say... so need to use those smarts for good

  • Ivy Leagues can actually be cheaper to go to than state schools because they offer need-based financial aid. They're VERY generous to those that need aid and aren't nearly as anal about giving you money.

  • Princeton is such a cool place to live, not necessarily to go to school though XP

  • i would love to go to an ivy. tradition, fun, and an amazing education. i want the best!!! YALE!!!

  • Columbia :)

  • Can't beat ivy league. What did everyone else think of the new one called "You Have A College Degree, Now What?" Heard the book has gotten good reviews so far.

  • "The Ivy League: Brown, Columbia, Dartmouth, Harvard, Pennsylvania, Princeton and Yale Universities" anagram-ciphers to "Secret GP/DoD2 halo lab torture 4 hive suave ninny rich 4 mind & code war valued 2 instill overbuy & main parent any land".

  • @bb4960 you forgot Cornell

  • While it is true that Ivy Leagues are better funded and give you better opportunities for a career. It is still the same education in its structure. The classes are the same, the teachers are the same. Really you are paying to have that prestigious name on that diploma. Perfect example of the so called "Elite" separating them selfs because they have more money that us common people.

You need to be pretty rich to afford a school like that, even if you are smart.

  • It would have been nice (better) if the videomaker had listed the name of the respective university somewhere, discretely, on each image...

  • its not exactly the same for every college/university. There is a reason they are the Ivy League. you get first rate education and funding and have much more opportunities after you graduate. If you were about to hire one of two people, one from let's say community college or one from Harvard University with the exact same grades and courses, most of the time, you'd go with the Harvard Graduate.

  • @xxoRebel That is where employers make the biggest mistakes of their lives. Harvard education is great but success is within a person and not an Ivy league school. These same graduates are the ones that ruin most companies. Let me ask you a question, How come financial professors in ivy league institutions are not the richest people in the world? Productivity in a company has nothing to do with an Ivy league education. it all depends on an individual capishe?

  • @tamale8861 , good analysis

  • Columbia! Thats the truth.

  • Names are B.S. if you know what you are doing you will suceed in life, otherwise you will be a mediocrity clinging to names to boost your self esteem....

  • Colleges and universities are endorsement institutions. The main issue is whether you score well enough to get in. The higher the school's requirements the more prestige. Afterward it is probably whom you impress among the faculty and fellow students. If you make the right friends, you're set.

  • You learn basically the same things in college/university and you strive for the same thing - getting a higher education and ultimately, a degree. The differences between prestiges universities and state colleges are the price and the personalities and the community as a whole. You're basically paying for only the experience, not the education. :)

  • I meant to say "...in any college/university that you attend and..."

  • You're also paying for the opportunity to network with people who have lots of $.

  • The experience and the connections.

  • @JonPiano not really... community college is not the same as an Ivy. most people do for wat u said but also for tradition and an excellent education. at least that's why i would like to go. :)

  • @JonPiano Of course, in some cases... no doubts. I just admit that the experience you getting there , that brilliant experience, actually is the education itself . : )

  • @JonPiano Umm...you're also paying for the name...which still, today, gives potential employers a certain impression...You also, if you're from a middle class family, get to hobnob with the scions of the rich and make lifelong contacts....nepotism is a very advantageous thing, and that is the cold hard truth...

  • @JonPiano I disagree. I went to a private catholic college when I did my undergraduate coursework then tried a state college. The caliber of professor was not there. They did not even challenge me. I ended up going back to a private catholic college for my masters..Perhaps an Ivy for my doctorates..

  • @JonPiano

I wouldn't entirely agree, though I do feel that the most important reason Ivy Leagues are so highly ranked is that they choose the best students and put a ton of pressure on them, not necessarily because they teach that much better than other schools.

  • @JonPiano

Not to be a dick...but thats something someone who didnt go to/get into a "top 25" school would say. Universities like Harvard, Yale, MichiganGrad, Duke, Stanford, etc. have professors who dont use the books but WRITE the books. The education is unique and for lack of a better word, "better"

  • @JonPiano The things is though, Ivies and other top schools offer the best need-based financial aid. In a lot of cases Ivies are cheaper than state schools. I think that's part of the reason why people choose top schools over state schools (and they want to be around people like themselves).

  • Hi Rock, basically the Ivy League is conference of schools (not unlike the Pac-10, Big-10, SEC, etc) on the East Coast of the US. They compete in NCAA Division 1 athletics. The conference is comprised of Yale, Dartmouth, Cornell, Princeton, Harvard, Columbia, Brown and the U. of Pennsylvania. The institutions are nowadays noted for their academic excellence more than athletic prowess- but at its core, "Ivy League" is simply an athletic conference. Try wikipedia/googling it for more info. Cheers!

  • Ohhhh that music makes me want to throw up with jealousy... ahahaha

  • Be the first 8 universities to be established in America...

  • So why is Cornell in there and the college of william and mary not?

  • Because Cornell is an Ivy and CWM is not.

  • which (witch) Ivy league is the best (topscoreprofiling)?

  • my sister went to U.T the university of Texas Austin and the went for her masters at Upenn and i fell in love with every ivy league school cause there are simply beautiful but also cause there really good schools

  • sure the campuses are pretty. But are the people friendly to non ivy league people?

  • Canada is the same with UK...degree in Universities only..Colleges offer diplomas.

  • hi, i'm canadian and i go to brock university in ontario.

i would just like to add that some colleges offer advanced diplomas as well as regular diplomas and certificates.

ALSO they have joint programs with universities for certain majors where you can take 2 years of college, 2 years of uni. and still get a degree not a diploma.

    hope this helps!

  • have a question for any american. can you get a degree from colleges over there or is it just diploma's like over here(UK)? please write back

  • You get degrees, not diplomas from American colleges.

  • in America,

college & universities are the same kind of education,

    yu get a degree.

  • hay guys is georgetown, stanford, syracus also part of the ivy league?

  • No. There are 8 Ivy League schools: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, Yale.

  • i live in australia and i wanna so badly go to harvard!! maybe i should just give up :P

are the SATS really that hard???

  • SATS aren't that hard, and besides they're graded on a curve so as long as you score better than the average you're fine. Also, living in Australia gives you an advantage for Harvard because they're always looking to increase diversity.

  • does someone here attend yale?? I'm very curious how that is . But i don't think i will go to yale because im dutch and yale is way too expansive. Do you get a scholarship for yale? x

  • I was wondering the same....I'm Singaporean

  • Why were Dartmouth, Cornell, and UPenn left out?

  • They aren't the four schools for Ivy League. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Brown

  • There's actually 8 Ivy League schools: Brown, Columbia, Cornell, Dartmouth, Harvard, Princeton, UPenn, and Yale.

  • Rutgers would've been in there had the people in charge of sports not gone whoring after football. Idiots turned down an opportunity back in the 50s to join... way to go

  • Thought that I saw Sage.

  • wtf. penn is in the ivy league too..

    why wasn't it shown here?

  • about the "deny you for being over qualified"... well you have to be in order to enter an Ivy League, and really, you would only turn down an Ivy League to go to another Ivy League... right?

  • Not necessarily. Some go to state schools because it's cheaper.

  • my brother got into brown and upenn

  • Accepted to Columbia for Master's Degree!

  • Congratulations! Welcome to Big Apple!

  • @psulions09 I did Grad School there...Congrats...You'll love the School and the City...

  • haha, get this. I didn't get accepted to UCSD, but i got into UCLA, Berkeley, and Brown. Go figure.

  • you cant get into ucsd unless you are asian

  • i hear there's mad kidnappings in san diego

  • hahahaha

  • hopefuly ill get into columbia

  • I got into Brown =)

  • Ivy league schools Are better because the students are obviously more motivated and better academically. This allows the professors to teach more to the students and to make it more challenging.

  • Go "BIG RED"!

  • lol to all the people who be hating on the ivys....u know had u been accepted u woulda gone :)

sorry u just wernt up to their rigourous standards.

  • Columbia is a very nice one ! Mainly because it is close to the NYC

  • Its not close to NYC...its IN NYC.

  • Ivy League Schools are like the biggest scammers ever. I have met like a 100 people over the last 12 years who transferred to Ivy League Schools from other schools. All of them said that there is no difference between Ivy League schools and other schools in terms of the content/quality of education. They only difference, they say, is that Ivy League schools are WAY more expensive and that its way more difficult to get into them. Once you get in, its all the same. George Bush was an Ivy.

  • you could get the same education from wikipedia. your paying for the name and reputation.

  • I agree, that's the way to go sooner or later.

  • are you sure?it is very different.the culture of the scgool and the activities, too.what is more, the people arong you is difernt

  • True but the name will look good one your CV. It will clear the way for more opportunities and offers.

  • Lol, George Bush was an Ivy. I like the way you used him to kill the Ivy name. Hahahah Good comment thumbs up!

  • Obama, John Kennedy and most members of the Supreme Court are Ivy League graduates. Bush #1 was actually a very good student and athlete and war hero.

  • Bush #2 was also ivy league for your info

  • I guess Cornell doesn't count as an Ivy?

  • ivy's are terribly overrated

  • i want to go to brown more then i can put into words

  • Its like going to a school where you have your own teacher as well as the fact that it is basically a castle. pretty awesome

  • dream.

  • If these photos are taken from 5 Ivies, why are 1/4 of the pictures of Princeton? Because Princeton is the best of the best.

  • beautiful place

  • Ivy Leagues are the best, they sure do cost alot but they pay off. I have an older sister going to CORNELL university. My goal is to go to UPENN i heard it was rank.....5? IDK but IL's ROCK. At least you get a good life when ur done you know?

  • so many of my friends are going to ivy league schools! it's INSANE!

  • your college is one of your biggest investments. If your capable of buying a new suv that depreciates in value, why not waste money on an elite college?

  • that's not true, they don't suck people's money away. They actually offer great financial aid.

  • I still think Stanford and the College of William and Mary are better universities in a traditional sense. Ivy League schools are too elitist and overrated.

  • They are overrated because most of the shit you learn you can learn elsewhere. Its all about the people you meet and their job connections at Ivy Schools that you pay for. Alumni go to great length to ensure young students get internships at great places.

  • Schools like Harvard and MIT are different from the best of the best because they attract scholars, professors, and students from around the globe. The best of the best, moreso over Oxford or Cambridge. Not to mention, Ivies have an unlimited supply of money.

These schools are research universities and do not promote "the shit you learn elsewhere." Its schools like Harvard that develop the newest AIDS or Diabetes drugs. But yes, they are elitist. But nevertheless still the best.

  • You are absolutely right. I was mainly referring to undergrad business and law programs. I should have mentioned that. The people you know are far more important then accounting 101 or Strategic management 101. But you must the programs of undergrads teach the same material no matter where you are. It's not like Harvard has has special material or topics that are not covered at Duke.

  • From what I understand, an Ivy League education is more intense than what you would find in public schools or mid-tier private schools. The fact does remain, having a degree and an Ivy League education is a benefit.... a guaranteed successful career.

  • While you go to the basic 101 classes at Harvard like you would at any school, you're often taught by some of the smartest people in the world. As an upperclassman or a graduate student, you are taught by the absolute best in their profession. Learning from someone who is the best makes the subject so much easier and enjoyable to learn. THATS what you get out of an ivy education. Besides awesome bragging rights!

  • Ya, I go to Penn and it's the #5 school in the nation...and you're not gonna put it in here, good work

  • What about Pennsylvania, Cornell, and Dartmouth?

  • "What about Pennsylvania, Cornell, and Dartmouth?"

They're just not Brown, though they would like to be :)

  • Good one. Cornell is the best.

  • MIT ain't one of the Ivy!

  • It was Columbia, not MIT.

  • Haha! Yes, it was Columbia. But Columbia University is not part of New England. New York was a Dutch colony, not that of the English.

  • Drink up baby, stay up all night with the things you could do...you won't but you might

  • Elliott... right on.
