@collalilly fact is, the windscreen(shield) is there for safefy, with a crack the window is no longer as strong, and is a safety hazard.
Maybe you should retract that comment about the Police being a "dumb shit" and be grateful he is looking out for your safety, oh and one more thing, it's illegal to drive with a cracked windscreen(shield).
