Despite the number of race and power combinations, I was disappointed by how similarly so many of them play, and the excitement of seeing the combinations vanished in just a handful of games. I also find that you win or lose on the whim of who attacks whom. While you can make yourself a little less appealing to attack, there really is very little strategy here.
Great game for non-gamers or people who just want to enjoy the theme, but not a game I want to play anymore.
@McNoat Indeed it is. It's a quick, easy to learn, dynamic and always lots of fun. I've only owned it for a couple of days, but have already purchased all expansions (except for the story lines) and played it close to twenty times, with various friends coming over to play this game specifically. I love Risk, but this beats Risk hands down.
@AernoutMJC It's not like the unplayed games of mine don't get plaid, because they are bad (hell, one of the is "Lord of the Rings - The cooperative game"!), but only because I haven't got an opportunity to play them so far.
So, before I buy Small World, I should get those played.
Days of Wonder games are what got me into gaming. IMO they are the best quality games available. Not to take away from Rio Grande or Z-Man, but DoW just seem to be a bit better.
I've been waiting for this game and review for a long time now. It's sounding like a really good and fun game, unfortunately, it comes out at the same time where I dont' ahve the money for it. Another great review Mr. Vasel.
According to WatchitPlayed, the Victory Point step is essentially skipped for your first race.

I have to say this does not sound very fun.

@TannerWorld Oh right. Did not think of that at all in reference to this. Where's the ageless robotic singing children race?

So where does the skill come in?

@parkarboy73
placement of pieces and the choosing of the race. Politics and cost/benefit analysis play an important part of the game. Especially with more players

Why does he say "I won't make reference to Disney in this review" at the beginning?

I believe there is an iPhone version of this now available. I haven't played it, so can't recommend it.

Hey, it's an updated version of Vinci. I played the frak outta Vinci back in grad school, and it seems it's gotten a facelift.

@AernoutMJC I want to own Small World so badly, but I just have too many unplayed games in my closet :(
McNoat 1 year ago
@McNoat This won't be yet another of those. Trust me. It simply wouldn't get the time to start gathering dust.
