That wasn't the first review. Nintendo Power first gave it a 7/10, GamePro gave it a 4/5, and 1UP gave it a B-. I bought the game and I think it's fairly decent. It's not terrible, and the controls work for me. So no, you're not entirely right.
The point is, I didn't make judgements and accusations until I tried it myself. My friends and I had has a few laughs with it, but I knew ahead of time that Battle of the Bands wouldn't have the lasting appeal the more popular music games game. It's far from terrible, but nothing impressive.
Something I would like to add. For a game to bomb, it would have to get a lot fo 1s, 2s, and 3s (out of 10). Even if 5.6 is pretty low, it's still considered "average". I just read IGN's review and there were a few things they got wrong. For example, they said there's only four commands in the game when there's actually six. Oh well as they say, you can't spell ignorant without I-G-N.

In the video, the ranchero and rap covers of Feel Good Inc. are being played. Of course they don't sound accurate, this game is about music genre clashing hence the name battle of the bands. The rock cover would be the more accurate sounding one, but there isn't a rock band being used in the first half of the video. I thought the Master Exploder covers were decent. What more do you want? There's 150+ recordings in this game. Do you always judge a book by it's cover? Wait for reviews.

From what I've read you use the wiimote to swing left, swing right, swing down, side to side gently, side to side fast, and thrust. You use the A button to swap between the weapons you chose before the song, and the B button to dodge attacks.

IGN gave it a 5.6 medicaore rating calling the presetation lousy with decent graphics though BUT the gameplay got a 4 because they said the wiimote gestures were quote "usualy aren't fun". The point of this game is to see how certain songs sound in other styles. I never thought Tenacious D's "Master Exploder" would get into this game. I think this game will be worth buying for the laughs. It's a great addition to the music genre. It's something different than your basic "band simulator." Don't get me wrong, I love Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but this game will open people up to different music genres.
I've read about this game; the concept is to get the beats or whatever right so the band can play the song in question in their particular genre; also hear the "final boss" is a whole entire orchestra... bound to be interesting to see how songs like "Man in Consent Sorrow" may sound like in an another genre.
