I love listening to bluegrass flatpicking, but I'll be damned I CAN"T play this stuff for shit. I can play my Metal, I can play my Blues, some Jazz (if it's not TOO complicated), Classic Rock. I can "dabble" in most stuff, BUT BLUEGRASS. It's embarrassing, the timing has no "natural groove" feel to me, and I think being repetitively kicked in the groin feels better than a acoustic guitar "feels". :( . I guess some of us aren't meant to be no matter how much desire or woodshedding. :(
Don't feel embarassed :) Bluegrass is quite complicated! Especially stuff like that! I can't play like that :P It requires a very steady rhythm and a great picking hand.
But hey, practice makes perfect ;) Just keep that dream alive!
Chrchy- Tony Rice, Bryan Sutton etc. are all great but to overlook Steve Kaufman is absurd. A lot of players just do endless 'licks' with little regard to a song's melody - Kaufman combines both and in my opinion, ranks just ahead of Tony Rice.
I agree with John77905, and he's just mentioning Bluegrass players! There's a whole universe of music out there and comparisons of style are helpful but comparisons of overall quality can be troublesome! Peace y'all
you are correct i only mentioned the bluegrass musicians because sutten is bluegrass but you are very correct there are many great artist in a variance of genre's.
well i would not go as far as to make such a bold statement as to sa he is the best alive today. but he is one of them on a list that is about 20 deep. lets not forget the mark o conners, tony rice, roland white, norman blake ect ect ect great vid.
well it also has a lot to do with opinion and it might also help that he was the first real flatpicker i ever heard. i havent been into bluegrass that long.
Met Bryan at Merlefest a couple of years ago and got to hear him at one of the jamming/picking tents up close. A very pleasant, humble fellow, but one who has mastered his craft and art with discipline and dedication. I'm inspired to practice and try to find my voice as a guitarist. Thank you Bryan!
I had fun teaching Bryan Sutton this piece.

Yes, not only have I heard of him, I have played with him. He is truly a living legend.
