  • I need a dirk gently movie...

  • To ALL Christians out there who feel the need to bag brilliant science fiction writers for undercutting their beliefs read all five parts of the trilogy...

    *spoiler alert*

Gods final message to his creation...

    'sorry for the inconvenience'

  • The hitch-hiker's guide has had so much praise, Dirk Gently needs a movie.

  • According to the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, the most offensive word in the universe is 'Belgium'

  • damned he was gonna write more BOOKS , now, what kind of god...!!!!

still hes the coolest writer of all times to me

  • 4 people don't know where they're towels are.

  • why do all the good people die too early?

  • @langers37 who said he was a good person? did you knew him?

maybe, maybe not, but i can tell you this he was drinking and smoking alot.

"The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy occurred to him while he lay drunk in a field in Innsbruck, Austria, gazing at the stars"

any way he was one of the funniest ppl ever RIP

  • actually, who said he was a person? haha

  • I'm Christian, but I believe that the top reason for non-Christians is Christians themselves. I don't hate people who aren't Christians, nor do I think that they are bad people in anyway. Rather, I do my best to love everyone, just as Jesus would. His entire ministry was based on love, so can we please focus more on that?

That said, I have to say that I have amazing respect for and love the works of Joss Whedon and Douglas Adams (both Atheists). So, for those dissing Adams, stop. He was awesome

  • @cromew

1 how the hell.......o kitty did you end up at this vid.

two its indeed a nice that you done believe that what stands in the bible to be truth but sadly most Christians do and i done think you can change there idea's considering this. but anyway nice that you done believe you can just kill us infidels including children and pregnant womans and steal the virgin woman who are allowed to mourn for a month before becoming sex slaves (satiric tho a part of old testament ethics).

  • I just let out an uncontrollable sigh everytime I think about how sad it is to lose such an insightful and funny human being so early =(

  • It makes me sad that he never got to watch the movie.

  • If he had written more books, chances are his legacy would not have been as great as it is. The grandeur of the Hitchhiker's series might have been tainted. Or reinforced. Whichever, of course.

  • Everybody dies but some people just do it at the wrong time.

    :(

  • @weavehole Yeah! He should have turned all of these ideas into books first, and then died...

I can't help wondering what he would have made of the last 10 years, and if he had become a more wise person with age, if that's possible. Every year or so, I return to Adams' books and go through the same realisation that he's no longer with us.

  • Happy towel day!

  • I apologize for ufewl's actions. He should not be as rude as he is. Not all christians are like him, although it seems that this is what is portrayed. Douglas Adams was a great writer. What he has or has not done is over with and there is no reason to be criticizing everyone else. Ufewl, you are supposed to be showing people Christ, not pushing them away from him like you are doing. You and other types like the Westboro "baptist" "church" are part of the problem, not the solution.

  • " he won't be laughing when he is burning in hell, he will be crying, mark my words"

This guy cracks me up :D he is inconsistent with his own "beliefs", souls can't cry dick head I severely doubt that something metaphysical would burn either....

Hell even the Vatican has gotten rid of the fire and brimstone shit opting for hell as being an absence from god, Muppet.

  • We missed out on so much when he died.

  • Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. He has a special list of 10 things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture, where he will send you to suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!

    But He loves you.

    -Goerge Carlin

  • There is no such thing, except to religious idiots, as 'blaspheming'...it's a ridiculous scare tactic cooked up by people who actually believe in such ROT. ood luck in your make believe 'hell', LOL...

  • 'Who do you think you will feel...'

Pretty sure you MEANT 'how', right?

If there IS a God, he has NOTHING to do with ANY 'organized religion'...so as long as you have been a good person (I have) you should have nothing to worry about...you, on the other hand, with your angry accusations and insults, should worry PLENTY....

  • "If you could reason with religious people, there would be no religious people"

    -Doctor House, FOX TV

  • @cecinid that's a bit of an over statement, don't you think? it would be like disproving all laws of phisics and saying that athiests are morons. i'm an imbetweener, so all i'm trying to say is lets discuss it

  • Again, dumbass loser ufewl (shouldnt that be 'uFOOL'?)...as there is NO SUCH PLACE as 'hell', Im sure artguy is laughing his ass off at you at this very moment...as all of us with an eduction above the second grade are doing...you pompous, arogant DOUCHEBAG.

  • cecinid...ufewl is just one of those sad losers that feels a need to JUDGE everyone that is not 'religious', as he THINKS he is, tho NO real CHRISTIAN would be filled with such hatred and venom. Typical of the overly judgemental idiots, Im afaid...

  • ufewl...you just don't get it.

There IS NO HELL. You are an idiot and a complete JOKE to believe such ROT. Yes, why would you want to bother with the brilliant Aadms' books? You have your OWN FAIRY TALE storybook, it's called 'THE BIBLE'.

    Good luck in prison, MORON.

  • 'Tossers, the lot of them. May he rot in hell'

Sort of hard to 'rot' in a FICTIONAL place created to enslave the mindless, isn't it? YOU sir, are the TRUE tosser/wanker.

  • The 'Hitchhiker' TV adaption is still my fave...sure, it was CHEESY and 80's, but it FIT so damn well! The guy who played Zaphod was freakin' perfect...as were the rest of the cast (especially Ford and Arthur)...the film was a disappointnment, sadly...too much attention to FX, not enough to characters...

  • The book is fantastic, the TV series are great too, but the movie fails epically.

  • its sad that he's dead but at least we still have stephan fry

  • "...it's very deep... Tell me about-"

    "No, it isn't!"

Adams is one of the best authors I know who can come up with some of the best ideas, and then pull them apart, in equally fantastic ways. Like 7677890, I wish he were still alive.

  • *sigh* oh the things that could have been...

  • Wouldn't it be great to have Douglas Adams commentating on things like the Internet?

One of the greatest authors of the 20th century, and the best tech writer of all time. H2G2 never gets old!

RIP DNA. The world is a poorer place without you.

  • DNA?

  • Douglas N. Adams - DNA, born 1959, Cambridge. Bit of a coincidence.

  • Actually, I think it was 1952.

  • he forgot the mona lisa in third class

  • he did massive amounts of writing on it, and besides that, most of the different versions are mutually contradictory. had it not been for the movie i'd never have read those amazing books or seen the tv series

  • See I just don't see it. How come it was so appalling and predictable?

It's more likely that he wrote the credits.

  • he did the entire screenplay and approved all the changes, the only differences would be improvisations on the actors part. i quite liked the movie, and i'm a huge douglas adams fan (to the point of obsession) what did you think was predictable or appalling?

  • It stunk. It was painful!! Full of ridiculous slapstick comedy. Some of the best writing from the book (the bits that convinced me to watch the original TV show) were totally cut to shreds, abbreviated, and robbed of their charm. The new stuff was painfully obvious and silly... I don't want to watch it again so I can elaborate.

Ah well, if he wrote it he wrote it. I still find it hard to believe as his last (unfinished) book was pretty funny.

  • Oh well, to each their own. I rather liked the immaturity, and i think their portrayal of Marvin is genius, and loyal to the book.

  • seconded.

  • People say that everything about the various incarnations of Hitchiker's is contradicting, and I see that. We have to respect the Authors way of doing things. But when I first read the books I loved the story as well as the caracters. The movie had just fragments of the story from the books and the radio show (at least what I have heard of it.) If Adams had much to do with it, it's with all his respect (rip) not his best work. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't great.

  • I dunno. I just remember the horrid moments of slapstick feeling totally unlike anything he'd have written of his own accord.

To have a really grounded criticism I suppose I ought to watch it again but I'm still stinging from the first time..

  • Indeed, I was dissapointed to :/ But I might watch it again, and as you say have a open mind... just take it for what it is. But I wish they sometime could make a movie closer to the books or the radio show.

  • I've been waiting for the second part to the movie.

  • can't be. They took parts from all of the 5 book trilogy.

  • Right, but there is still enough good material in the books for a second movie...

It would be kind of hard without Douglas writing the script, but in my eyes it's possible, and I would love to see it. Of course one would have to remain faithful to the original when it comes to the "spirit" of such a movie.

  • Hollywood should just let go of The Guide. We've got the radio series, the tv series, a book series, and now a movie. The Guide is pretty much done with its story. (sorry to say)

maybe we'll need new characters... but Arthur Dent's story has been told many times.

  • Those are my final responses. Sometimes it's better to ignore haters. We should be talking admiring talk about Mr. Adams, not arguing religion. No, I am not really Satan, I am however pretty tired of responding. Yes, ufewl you have a right to comment, but we, as Fans of Mr. Adams, have a right to ignore you. Carry on. Nothing negative means anything in the great scheme of things.

  • Going on to the admiring talk about the GREATEST hitchhiker ever... Will they really make a new Guide book? I hope not. Arthur, Trillian, Ford, and Marvin are all dead. What are they planning, to have some kind of adventure with Zaphod? They already DID that.

You know, they could make a sequel with different characters who kind of relate to Ford and Arthur and Trillian and Marvin... and Zaphod can guest star!

    heh heh.

  • By the way, why would a band like The Who send me to hell? Divine, not devine. Whoompha!

  • Hey ufewl; the Divine doesn't judge, so why do you? Are we feeling a little "holier then thou?"

  • Who is this god person anyway?

  • "It amazes me to find an intelligent person who fights against something which he does not at all believe exists."

    -Mohandas Gandhi*

(loosely translated = atheists are wankers)

  • (loosely translated = atheists are wankers)

Riiight...because they don't abandon all reason to believe in a fairy tale book to guide their lives? Yes, that IS rather silly, isn't it?

  • i truely respect his sense for life. he understood.... what a genius..

  • So long, And Thanks For All The Books.

    You WILL be greatly missed

    RIP

  • Why would a bible thumper who hates Mr. Adams be watching his last interview anyway?

  • christians can be total asses! isn't that right, ufewl...as Ghandi said: I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians, they are so unlike your Christ

  • Evolution did not do him any favours - lol

  • Well no, unless you consider being 6'5" tall, a brilliant writer, a multi-millionaire, a world-wide celebrity, a close friend of Pink Floyd's (even NAMING an album and performing at a concert with them) to somehow be "cool", "fun" or a "good thing"......................................oh, wait.....

  • that was sad "hopefully you will see more books over the next few years"

  • i agree :( i would have loved to see another one at least :(

    RIP DOUGLAS

  • R.I.P. Douglas Noel Adams...

May 25th, towel day in his memory, carry a towel all day, fans of The Guide...

  • wait, i'm confused--that big nucleus galaxy exploding nuclear ball thingie at 0:27, is that a real total perspective vortex? where the hell did they get that footage? where can i buy one?

  • what is all this hitchikers footage coming from? it looks like it comes from some "making of" special from the 1982 movie...

  • They did a tv show in the early to mid 80s. It's along the lines of the old Dr. Who.

  • i really miss his writings.... :'(

  • don't you miss your brain ufewl?

  • Fail troll fails.

  • Question! why is a religious fool looking at science fiction HG stuff? Don't you have your own fiction to look at? The bible perhaps?

I know. Excellent stories in the bible. My favorite's the Adam and Eve story with the Garden of Eden. I don't know why. Maybe because it matches off with Golden Compass pretty well.

    But it's all fantasy.

At least the guide is Science fiction, meaning we may obtain that stuff eventually.

However, God vanished in a puff of logic long ago.

  • You stupid idiot it was Adams who vanished in a puff years ago, God is very much alive and kicking.

Adams is beinig entertained by th devil for his sins.

So stick you golden compass up your arse and look forward to burning in agony in hell for all of eternity.

A pleasant prospect I am sure you will agree.

Don't say you were not warned - there is no way out once your in.

  • *chuckle* Isn't the whole thing about God means that he's not alive? He's um...Godly.

I don't know what parallel universe you come from, but in this one no one likes to be called an idiot. I didn't call you an idiot, only a fool. But even fools have their uses. I'm not sure why you're so anti-Adams. Just what did he do? He created science fiction comedy, stood up for the animals, became friends with Monty Python, and then rejected God.

It's weird condemning an atheist to hell. But okay. PARTY!

  • The part is upstairs, you will be writhing in agony in the basement.

  • Now, now, i thought u were a part of the many religions? Why r you condemning me to a life of torture? It is irony, of a sort. I thought wishing death upon another was against the bible?

To contradict you, i do not wish you to any sort of torture. I only hope that you'll find your way. Make yourself a life of happiness, not ignorance. If it really makes you happy to condemn someone who doesn't agree with you, then fine. have your happiness. Just stop with the hatred.

  • I am not wishing you death just imforming you that if you reject God and he exists you condem yourself to hell, that's all.

So I am not condeming you merely informing you.

The choice is yours. If he doesn't exist you have nothing to worry about, if that turns out to be the case. As you can prove God does not exist, which I assume you can you don't have too much to worry about really?

  • All right then. Fine. I'll go to hell, a place that i don't exactly believe in...just like how heaven doesn't exist either. Though...we could make a republic of heaven...that would be cool...

Do you really think i would choose paradise over following my heroes to some crackly fire pit?

I consider myself like Revan. Sure, i'll go to the unknown regions, where no one will come back, all in exchange for following equally great people.

    WE CAN SAVE THIS WORLD.

  • thank you for proving us all right about you people-hateful to the damn bone.

  • How could anyone hate Douglas Adams? WTF is the deal with some people?

  • I know! But apparently this horrible Christian feels that because he's an atheist, he's evil.

What's funny is that it was either him or some other person who warned me that if i keep up with Adams and my own Atheist beliefs, i too will burn in hell.

And i was like, "Dude. Do you really think i would choose sitting on a cloud rather than being with Adams? I'm with him until the very end."

Yeah. So what did you do? LOL

  • Hey this is hilarious-I never went to public school. I went to private school through graduation. I'm a computer engineer; more importantly I know how to spell "talentless" and understand the concept of capitalizing the first word of a sentence. Sorry, but if you're looking for idiots you won't find many who are Adams fans. The Bible......on the other hand.....

  • If Adams is in the mythological hell, I'll be there with him too. If the mythological god tries to put me in heaven I'll do my best to piss the Wanker off so badly he'll have no choice but to put me w/ my friends; Douglas and Syd and David and the rest of the Floyd'll rock out Hell so hard people will start leaving heaven. If it weren't a myth, that is-which it is.

  • Amen to that. But it's still hard to believe...why do these religious wankers expect the Enlightened Educated people (Atheists) to be afraid of such fiction? I mean...please. There are MOVIES that are more scary than hell! (Have you seen Saw? You didn't see Saw? No, i haven't saw Saw. Yeah, probably better that way. It's very Saw-see.)

And that's why Jainism is a better religion.

    Wait, what?

  • It's Saw-see, but does not see-saw, that Saw I seem to see saw.

  • yeah, i know. I see Saw and i involuntarily see saw too! Saw-see movies do that...

  • I can't wait for the new book, though it isn't adams writting it, because I'm hoping it has marvin in it. I don't imagine it would be to hard to produce classic marvin in a new book. he's rather one dimensional.

  • They can't make another book. Marvin, Trillian, Arthur, and Ford all died. The only one who survived was Zaphod.

Marvin died in book 4, remember? and the last three died in book 5.

I consider it death. The only way they'd come back is through one of the parallel universe. But hell, that's confusing.

  • I miss him a lot! That video almost made me cry! :,(

  • "wow, that's really deep."

    "no it isn't"

  • Also: There's no way Eoin Colfer's book is going to come anywhere near as good as the ones by Douglas Adams, plus I have yet to see him do comedy. I'm not too happy with it.

  • He wasn't a really radical atheist. He just saw no real reason or evidence to believe in God. He wasn't going to tell you THERE'S NO GOD, he just didnt think there was one. I believe he said it "I don't believe that there ISN'T a God, I just don't believe there is." it's sort of a passive versus active thing, you see?

  • :( I miss DNA. Can't wait to get my tribute tattoo.

  • I'm reading criticism of Adams' writing, but he certainly made me laugh more than Billy Shakes.

  • I'm not sure how to feel about this upcoming 'Book 6: ...And Another Thing', I wonder if maybe some parts of Salmon of Doubt will be included seeing as how some of it was technically maybe some of what Book 6 would have been if he had lived, humm... how does everyone feel about Eoin Colfer writing the final chapter to the Hitchhikers Series due out Oct 09?

  • He wasn't even sick, as you can see he's in good health here, but he had to die of a fucking heart attack a few days later... :(

  • you know Adams would laugh at that statement , theists don't get heart attacks ?

  • Learn to spell, and then try and verbally spar, ok?

  • What's your problem, huh? Does it make you feel special, in some way, to go about insulting Douglas Adams and making people angry? Is that how you get your kicks? By witlessly antagonizing people? If so, you're no better than you claim him to have been.

  • Well said from someone who is obviously SO soulful!

  • "A lot more books over the next few years".

    :[

  • He sure was one hoopy frood.

  • Lovely how in the hitchhiker movie they put "For Doug" at the beginning. I really like new doctor who but if Douglas had been around Steven Moffat was certain that RTD would've asked him to write some eps. It would've been amazing!

  • miis you doug! ='[

  • Douglas was a great man, it's a shame that he passed away so early. I really enjoy listening to his lectures and stuff like that, he will be missed.

At least he died with a towel around his neck while working out. I think he would be amused by that. :)

  • Yep... he was certainly a guy who knew where his towel was.

  • That shows me that you don't know ANYTHING about what he's done. He archieved a lot more than most people, and I'm quite sure that he archieved MUCH more than you ever will. He was a god damn genius. He traveled the world to save endangered species ("Last chance to see", etc), and he embedded his ideas and views about our society into his books.

P.S.: You know that there are THHGTTG novels, do you? It seems to me that you never read them... Sad. The movie is based on them, they are far better.

  • He was a visionary. Anyone not suffering from a poverty of the imagination such as yourself can see this. Go back to the ignorant darkness you crawled out from.

  • Thanks man, you crack me up - it's all in the satire blasphemous spirit of Douglas Adams himself. I can almost hear the nasal "upper class twit of the year speach" (from Monty Python) delivery of your ranting... again thanks!

  • Oh yes, I forgot: christians are immortal. He's dead because he was an atheist... was für ein schwachsinn (= what a bullshit)

  • What have you produced of merit? I put it to you that you are a turd.

  • You are a witless cocksmoker!

  • I'm sure if there is a God or Goddess or Gods that Adams is making him/her/them laugh with his dry wit.

But daft git like you wouldn't understand that.

  • "a lot more books over the next few years"!! WHY did he have to die? this will never stop bugging me :(

  • Such a rare breed of genius... so long, and thanks for all the fish ‡->

  • i believe douglas adams passing on is one of the greates losses for lit.

  • I finished Mostly Harmless 3 or 4 days after he died and was pretty much devastated when I made the connection.

If you want to keep along the spirit though, Adams started a web site with the BBC called H2G2 or the Second Hitchhiker's Guide, where everybody can write entries for a massive encyclopedia of sorts

  • I saw that he passed while eating soup in Dublin.

    I suddenly wasn't hungry.

However, I still remain a fan of Gin & Tonic.

  • he really was " one of the last of his kind ". a disappearing species...

  • I remember sitting in front of the stereo as a kid in Ohio and taping the radio series off of public radio a bit over 25 years ago. I still had the cassette tapes up until the audio CDs came out. So long and thanks for the legacy, mate!

  • I heard the original show is really hard to find recordings off. Some of the music and sound effects is copyrighted by other companies, so they aren't allowed to publish any CD's etc? I'm a hugh fan of his books, so I would really like to hear the radioshow :) Can you please tell me if you know a website or something???

  • the BBC released a box set with the original shows, plus the series of the last three books they did a couple of years ago.

  • Aha! Thanks for the info :) Are there any websites where one cane order it?

  • They have them on Amazon UK (used) and also have the series seperately. The set we got also had a "making of" disk full of interviews with the original cast and crew.

  • First got into the The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy in college. So lucky that I managed to get my hands on mp3's of the radio broadcast episodes. I still enjoy them throughly.

  • such a loss, miss him so much, i have my towel at the ready for May 25th.

  • may 25th?

  • may 25th is towel day to celebrate Douglas Adams life

  • ditto!!

  • The world lost a great man in him.

  • What a lost of a beautiful brain!

  • Hitch-hikers guide to the galaxy is the only book I have EVER sat down and read front to back out of my own free will (not force fed for an English class assignment).

I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. RIP Douglas Adams and thank you!

  • sad he died V_V

    loved his books/tvshows and movie!

  • Wow, if that interview was a few days before his death, he really looked and sounded well. How did he actually die?

    Besides: RIP.

  • He died of a sudden heart attack while working out.

Very sad. He had so much more potential.

  • RIP. My hero.

  • I'm longing for those books that now will never be written.

  • I feel cheated and I cry!

  • before his death? whats that supposed to... NOOOOOOO!!!

  • Ow. Sorry, 321sterces123. If it's any consolation, he's swimming w/ the fishes in the good way.

  • Happy belated birthday, Mr. Adams.

  • h2g2 is my favourite fictional err...entity. I'd have loved to have read those unwritten books. I was however lucky enough to have worked on the film so in a tiny way i feel part of it all! Brilliant brilliant Douglas Adams.

  • So I'm sure lots of fans want to know, what did those of you who worked on the film think of the finished product?

  • The general opinion was that it was fairly good. However comparisons are unavoidable, especially when dealing with such cult material. Everyone new the close scrutiny it would come under. Personally i view the film seperatly from the radio, tv and book incarnations. I watched it a few weeks ago and enjoyed it, but it really is a whole different thing.

  • Thanks.

  • Yeah. Thanks again.

  • RIP Douglas.

  • Er war der Beste. Wegen ihm habe ich angefangen zu schreiben. Schaut euch den Werbespot meines Buches an. Es lohnt sich. Ein Multiversum für die Lachmuskeln. Time Trip Mit Chaos durch Raum und Zeit

  • look at this whole god thing logically: in order for something to exist, something must create it. In physics, energy cannot be created or destroyed, therefore, whoever or whatever created the universe and the energy in it had to be outside of it, and hence must have been a god or god-like.

  • Your statement begins an infinite regression of questions, then who created god, just the fact that you say that there's god who created the universe it is logically correct to ask who created him. Honestly it's not easy answer but what is the probability, which is very little.

  • True, true.
