@Inyourface209 no, he isn't dead, the producers said that it is up to the viewers to interpret the ending, and personally, I think he should be alive because of all the little 'hints' they gave proving him to be alive at the end of the show. You can search for info.

No, the two are best friends (but become enemies in the second season) in the anime and are often coupled together. It's basically like in the series Naruto with Sasuke and Naruto (for friend/enemy relationship turned into yaoi).
