Ya'll should also research the terms sexualism, homonegativity, and heteronormativity on Wikipedia. To some extent any discrimination against LGBT people could also be construed as forms of gender discrimination.
Homophobic is more mainstream usage and has gained popularity in media so people use it. Heterosexism is a term more used in academia, especially in sociology and gender studies. I agree with you though that it is a better word to represent the meaning. Very few people are actually "scared" of gay people as the phobia implies, its more of a hate of homosexuals and an obvious exclusion, disregard or degradation of any person claiming sexuality other than the hetero norm.
well that would make it sound like being gay makes you a different gender. I think the term homophobic is the best word. These people fear them because they are afraid because they are different and people fear what they do not understand.
You could say that about anything though, and often people don't care to understand. Also, being gay is something that has little meaning for a single person on his/her own; it applies to pairings of people, based on gender.
Hmmmn? My first comment didn't go through. I was just saying that you should just call them bigots, because that's what they are. Don't get so bogged down in the semantics of bigotry. If they are bigots about gays, they are almost certainly bigots about every other oppressed group also.

I don't care for the word homophobia, or homophobic.
Because it's plain old fashioned bigotry. Someone who discriminates or has issues regarding gay people is just a plain old fashioned bigot.
