I can see how tiresome it would be to conduct endless interviews about your art and how pleasant it would be to joke about with a pal during one of these dreary moments. I think it has to be marketing alone that explains how fine musicians who have 20 albums are still unknown. If he had more concert tours with fellow musicians like PF, PF fans would have embraced him. I myself never heard of him until I stumbled upon him on eMusic today.
@CattailsandRoses Hit the nail on the head there, mate. I can see how a million PF fans could be in love with this guy. This coming from a PF fan myself, I was a floyd fan first and now I am John Martyn fan. Discovered him through a musician friend of mine who linked me his video of "John Wayne". Also agree about the conduct during the interview. John didn't care about who thought what of him personally, nobody is stoned in this video.
Two musicians here who I love. I never could understand why John Martyn didn't sell tons of records. I think his music should have had a much broader appeal and more fans than it did.
thats fucking a joke disgraceful jaysus christ are they on acid? specially gilmour.that is nothing to do with the song what gilmours playing.and i love both men?
my two heroes. brilliant. just to see them together never mind play together many many thanks for posting. this country this government should never stop us from sharing greats like this.
I've never seen this a a live performance ..... I searched for it and found it here ... thanks for posting a real gem and Gilmour playing as well.... what a find !!!!!
John definitely led the way. Incredibly innovative and this is just so gorgeous, chilled - and probably stoned as you say. The proud father singing about his beautiful daughter. RIP Big Man.
Wonderful performance, good to hear John from the 80's not being so self consciously 80's-centric. I usually dislike Gilmore's playing but he actually plays quite tastefully here.
I am wondering if any1 has a stronger understanding of these comparisons i am about to make than I ?
After a 1973 video of J.Martyn performing "I'd Rather Be The Devil" , I assumed that some of my favorite guitar playing & songwriting from D.Gilmour & Pete Townshend was influenced by John Martyn.
AT this point I see Martyn as the innovator of a particular way of playing , using modern technology, that Gilmour & Townshend got to afterwards.
Interesting perspective. I don't know Townsend's style too well. Lots of energetic strumming seems to be the levelof my insight, but Gilmour's playing i see as being quite different to JM's. DG's style is very much taylored to the stadium experience. He does use lots of delays but not in the same way. Much shorter sustain in the effect. And he doesn't de-tune! I think JM was before his time in lots of ways. And really varied, so i think that will have comparisons with most styles. Cheers
THANX hfxsue , i was hearing something that I wasn't going to be able to articulate very well in the confines of a U-tube post , if at all . But it was interesting to me b/c it was something that appealed to me very much in both their playing that I assumed was unusual.
I had heard Gilmour's playing long ago in my teens , but ,for the most part, John Martyn's music is new to me. I only discovered these You Tube videos about a month ago.
@pinkerton05 No i dont think they're stoned i think they're a bit tipsy more or less hence davids cheekyness which is sooo adorable hence why davids is no-1 in my older men cuties list
Jovial mood? Stoned me thinks.

Gilmour is the very definition of taste. It's a shame that popular music doesn't have room for this kind of music.
