  • Ya I was watching this as well, and just like a few years earlier with the huge disaster on the back straightaway involving Venterini, SpeedTV did not show a replay AT ALL, I waited and waited for a replay but I knew it had to be bad since they didn't show it. Eventually both drivers were ok I guess, but ya no excuse not to avoid that sliding car.

  • watched this one, horrendous crash u can here how hard it is

  • and Patrick won the 2010 championship

  • ...and I just realized this:

Larry Hollenbeck (#23) did the same thing in the caution before, when Bobby Gerhart blew a tire and hit the wall. Bobby was coming back down the track and Larry came full-throttle by him and missed him by a foot. I hope Hollenbeck won't be back this season (at least at the Superspeedways). There's no excuse to not use the brakes, unless you don't have them, in which case you shouldn't be racing.

  • I was actually in talks with James Hylton's team to race for them at Daytona this season, but negotiations went nowhere, so I'm still looking for a ride (or a car, for a good price).

  • i watched this live and thought larry hollinback was dead.

  • I actually thought both of them were going to be severely injured, luckily they both were in pretty good shape a few days later.

  • ...

  • how many cars were left at the end of the race?

  • Both drivers are lucky i think, Sheltra is really luck because if that was dead on driver door, hes dead no doubt about it,

If you ask me this wreck was avoidable, at least the big hit part,

but in defense of the 23, Usually the car drifts back down the track there, this one didnt, and if you look, you notice the 60 slides back up the track there.

As for the 44, thats to be expected, he is one of the MOST experienced drivers there with 7 or 8 championships under his belt. Thank god they are ok

  • too bad the 44 spined out also, he didn't deserve it for his quick reactions

  • or the driver misinterpreted what the spotter told him

  • Patrick Sheltra actually came back and won the next race of the season, go figure.

  • look how fast nr.44 reacts and rushes away before crashing cars

  • i think arca cars have lights on the dash to indicate when the yellow comes out also...

  • yea they do

  • trying to avoid the crash and he got loose on the apron

  • he turned left to miss the 60, and he sort of lost traction, and when he hit the apron, he lost control of the car

  • Too bad he had a good FIVE SECONDS to get to the bottom of the track, and he made absolutely no effort to do so. He also didn't slow down at all for Bobby Gerhart's crash earlier in the same race and nearly slammed into him as well. Larry drove like an idiot the entire race and got paid in full.

  • larys spoter said you can make it cole i mean larry

  • Do they know what the break pedal is?

  • RENSHAW'D

  • not funny

  • omg you can hear the hit what great quality, horrible crash though

  • I think you are probably right but what an idiot. You don't Days of Thunder it in a two car crash.

  • Didn't Hollenbeck have a spotter? If he did, fire him.

  • Took a while to un-screw his head. Damn!

  • Oh dang those brakes are horrible and I though the COT brakes were bad.

  • ouch that must have hurt

  • i never heard if they were alright, were they?

i bet patrick was a little dizzy

  • Yeah they were released from the hospital today.

  • hehe, yea, he was out! well i dont know about that, but he had some sort of non surgery fracture in one of his vertebrae

  • That hit looked like Richard Pettys crash after he flipped

  • yea no kidding, lets see you do better!

  • the 60 44 both lookied like they wanted to take flight, had there been more wind, or a bigger draft to travel faster, they would've been sailing

  • Get Well Patrick!

  • This isnt NASCAR..its ARCA

  • Same thing don't bullshit me.

  • Are you kidding? Didn't you see that awesome 2007 Daytona finish with the win margin like .39 seconds? FUCKING CLOSE MAN.

    BTW. this isn't NASCAR...it's ARCA

  • America's best truck

  • Is Larry just a wrecker or what?

  • i'm just glad those guys got to the hospital fast enough and were ok

  • then why did u click on it if you dont like it?

  • Because I didn't know it was a nascar clip...

  • Its not NASCAR

  • ahhhh, okkkkaaaaay ,,, then what is it??

  • ARCA

  • arca is connected to nascar though. how else would logano be able to race in arca and nascar

  • Some NASCAR drivers used to drive in NASCAR and in the IndyCar series and it doesnt mean NASCAR is connected to IndyCar.

  • hahahahahahha you're funny

  • id like to see you get out there and drive!!!! it aint that easy

  • watch the Jeremy Lusk crash here: v=QhjxV34la88

  • And our recent update from the ARCA site is as follows:

According to team reports, Sheltra, from Indiantown Florida, has a compression fracture of the back. He will undergo further evaluation and is expected to be released to the care of his personal physician with no surgical procedure anticipated.

Hollenbeck, from Kalamazoo Michigan, is in good spirits and expects to be released to the care of his personal physician as early as Monday.

  • the green car did a 1620. Nice!!!

  • Wrong.

  • you are the idiot... Ever hear of too much rear bias to be jumping on the binders at the drop off point of a turn at Daytona?

    A--HOLE!

  • Yeah,because 74 wins and 9 championships is "sucking".

    He spun to miss Sheltra.

  • Bummer Man!

  • hmmm...when u see a ton of smoke ahead of u, that obviously means theres a crash...so why the hell did that one guy feel like he had to drive the a wreck at 180mph? I dont watch arca all the time, but in the cup series, whenever theres a crash, the other drivers almost always slow down so this doesnt happen. jesus that couldve killed Sheltra.

  • his spotter may have told him to speed up so he could "drive" through it before a car hit him. sometimes if you slow down a car can come from behind or the side and hit you.

  • yea thats true, but from what I can tell from this clip, there weren't very many cars right behind him. he was going faster than most of the cars around him

  • Larry Hollenbeck is one of the dumbest people I have ever met. He should not be in a race car!

  • Watch Caution number 5 that happened before this accident. Hallebeck goes screaming past Bobby Gerhart on the apron after he blew a tire. No reason at all for him to keep his speed up because nobody was around him at the time. Hallenbeck should be fined big time.

  • I just can't believe that someone who saw a car that was stopped in the middle of the track go almost full speed into the rear end of the stopped car... it really makes me wonder.

  • yah even though the whole roll cage and stuff if he got hit in the door he would absorb like 10 times more impact and be crushed and dead. thank god hes alright

  • Well.. I'm African-American and LOVE stock car racing (and I'm certainly not "trash"). So if you don't like it, DON'T EVEN CLICK ON THE VIDEO, THEN.

  • speak the truth bro. im african american too. why do people even search for these to comment stupid shit if you dont even like it. if you hate it then why the hell do you search for it, watch it, then comment on it???????

  • that hardly makes any sence

  • sdr this was yesterday lol

  • is this new or old?

  • I am white trash and I approve this message

  • Meh. This happens everyday on commuter highways.

  • ARCA - If there's a wreck in Turn 1, and there are guys in Turn 3.....they'll be in it.

  • until this morning when i heard they were ok, i thought sheltra was either killed or seriously injured because speed channel didnt show any replays of the crash and they really didnt talk about the crash much.

  • yea it was almost like the werent taping and only had a live feed

  • Scary Wreck, I wonder what injuries he has? anyone know?

  • I posted a comment last night not thinking he could possibly survive and not being able to find any more information ANYWHERE on the web. I'm thrilled to find out this morning that he is in good hands in the hospital. It is fantastic that so much safety is built into the cars.

  • It was so loud because the audio switched to in-car, it want heard from the camera we're looking at.

  • Hollenbeck in the 23 car should be punched right in the mouth. There were 2 or 3 times that there were wrecks in frontof him and he didn't lift off the throttle any time. He was searching all day to hurt someone, and damn if he didn't find one.

  • I agree it was like the old days like he was racing back to the finish line under caution.

  • I'm glad I'm not the only person that feels this way about Hollenbeck. What an idiot.

  • Was he OK? Is the whole race on here?

  • well if thats the case i would say arca has some problems to work out.

  • well its just theres worse wrecks out there. michael mcdowell had a worse wreck than this jeff gordon had a worse wreck at vegas than this it just doesn't look like a bad wreck now it was a hard hit but it wasn't a bad wreck.

  • That's the kind of wreck that killed drivers Chris Gehrke and David Gaines (search the videos and you'll see almost identical hits). Flips actually dont hurt/kill people as much as raw hard impact

  • ok i guess its just me but that ain't even a bad looking crash to me. i've seen way worse wrecks than that. I mean hell senior's wreck didn't even look bad even though he got killed it still didn't look bad neither does this 1.

  • it was a hit almost square in the driver's door, stopped, with the other car still (for some reason...) at full speed. the car getting snapped around like that didnt help a whole lot either.

  • Just goes to show you how the cars are much safer today then they were when Dale got killed. The hans device should have been called the miracle device it has prevented so many injurys

  • Man that sound is vicious!

  • Oh my god, I can barely watch that, I had to leave for work right after this, I honestly though Sheltra was done for. Good lord that makes me want to throw up.

  • Cole Trickle.

  • I just checked the ARCA website, and it says that both drivers are alert, conscious, and in good spirits!! :) Oh, happy day!!!

Can anyone recall the 2005 ARCA Daytona race with all of its crazy wrecks and flips and all the ambulances on the backstretch during the last laps? This race today reminded me of 2005!

  • I'd be surprised if he survived. SPEED didn't show even one replay of the crash. VERY unusual. Second, during the caution and the later red flag they only showed wide shots of the rescue at the # 60 car. Again, they usually have a shot as tight as they can. Last, the announcers finally, and as a viewer waiting for some kind of answer, finally said that he was removed from the car and was now in the ambulance. All of their words and camera shots were ominous.

  • larry=where is the brake?

  • ARCA guys don't know where the brake peddle is.

  • is the driver of the 60 car ok?

  • damm i though that they were both dead when i saw it on tv Holy Shit Batman :l

  • ugh, i think i agree,

  • its the first race of the year, and i already smell a speed performance award for best/worst crash

  • you think???!!

  • When I saw that I said "HOLY $#!%!!!" Then when the window nets didn't drop and they started cutting him out. I thought the worst. I so glad he gave the Thumbs Up to the crowd.

  • holy shit!

  • Kenny Wallace just announced on SPEED that Sheltra was fine, but his Back was sore as his seat had buckled upward in the crash. But, strangely, he made it sound like the Hollenbeck may be a little worse as he said he was just awake and alert.......it may be nothing. BUt his delivery of his condition was a little more.....reserved. Anyway, I've been in motorsports for 30 years and I don't think I've ever heard a crash with a sound like that.......

  • darn i wanted him to win, he had one of the best looking cars out there

I hope he makes a full recovery, thumbs up if you agree

  • Saw this one live, what a vicious hit... That sound just makes me feel weak...

  • Just a reminder to all of you. Have you seen any of the thunder roadsters race at the 1.5 mile oval at charlotte? THAT is a beginner series for restrictor plate racing :)

  • To be honest, i saw this and panicked a little. A VERY hard crash. And my worry grows for how the driver in the green car is doing (I turned to watch NASCAR as saw Arca) and then saw this...

His window net didnt come down, and they stopped broadcasting towards him. Notice there was no replays and after the crew pulls up, there isnt another shot of his car...

They only do that in time of injury, so i hope he is ok because that has to be one of the hardest hits i have EVER seen in racing.

  • i agree, i watched it live, and i litterally choked, im like, theres no way hes not injured by that, i dont even remember an impact like that in any of my video games! that easily beat McDowell's Texas crash! EASILY!

  • I just heard on the local news here in Daytona they are in the hospital and are both conscious.

  • Why do the saftey vehicles always drive right infront of the wrecked cars? Is it to protect TV veiwers from seeing somthing they don't want to?

  • I think it's to prevent people from seeing something to protect the family members etc.

  • All they've said is that he is awake, really. That doesn't really mean anything. I'm still hoping for the best, but still worried.

  • dudes shit happens, this is nothing compared to a lot of accedents, nobody is responsible

  • That's bull. I'll say again - Hollenback should have slowed down for two decisive reasons - the track was shrouded in smoke, and they were under caution. It was absolutely Hollenback's fault.

  • THANK GOD that both drivers are alright, especially Patrick. That was a nasty, nasty hit!

  • Hey RedneckLeon, get your info right before you post stupid comments. Dumbass redneck!

  • Wow, I didn't hear it before, but the sound of that impact was crazy!

  • Comment removed

  • I realize that ARCA has always been a bit of a wreckfest, but I still think an investigation needs to be made and that a few drivers should have their racing licenses should be revoked. At the least, Hollenback should pay for Sheltra's medical bills.

  • Hey Kokomoron, they have health insurance. They've both been released from the hospital. It's all part of doing business.

  • duh, will you pay my hospital bill please. I didnt know I might get caught up in a big wreck. I've never seen an accident at Daytona before. Is this the first one?

  • no way let them thats i like arca cuz they crash alot.

  • sweet this is so bad ass, i hope everybody turns out to be ok

  • Larry should have slowed down, that was at least the second time that night he didnt bother to. when Bobby Gerhart crashed Larry flew by him within a foot or so. nevertheless hes lucky he didnt get poor Patrick in the door.

  • damm i hope he is ok

  • Holy crap! What a hit, I missed this race, I was at work! Im seeing it should have been "The Wreck Fest 200"..

  • yea remember steve park's freak wreck at darlington....and tht hit was only at 100-110 under a caution...like I said...Sheltra is lucky (even though he did sustain some injuries im assuming)

  • DAMN.... I was Rooting for Sheltra too. God Bless Him

  • Larry Hollenbeck is an idiot he could have killed Patrick Sheltra.

The caution is out SLOW DOWN.

  • It has nothing to do with them being on a restrictor plate track, or even the speeds. It's the principle of the matter - when the caution starts - or when you CAN"T SEE WHERE YOU'RE GOING - it's probably advisable to SLOW THE HELL DOWN!

  • man that was even worse than michael mcdowell's flip last year at texas! im glad to hear that he is ok now

  • itsalleternal makes a good point...but the sprint cup racecars now have their drivers seated more towards the center of the racecar....so the Sprint cup drivers can endure hits like these however the Arca cars are the old Sprint cup cars.....like schrader said during the broadcast good thing hollenback hit him more towards the rear of the car....it cood have been much worse if he got it right in the drivers door

  • Yes, but a car going 190 mph hitting a nearly stationary car will put a dent deep in the car regardless. Bringing the COT to ARCA will definitely help, but that is likely a couple years away at least (once used COT chassis become available by NASCAR teams, since the cost for ARCA teams is prohibitive).

  • srosswick - you're absolutely right that it's nothing new. and that it used to be even worse. But that doesn't mean it needs to continue. If Sheltra's car had rotated a little differently and he got in the driver's side.. they would've been loading him out of the car and directly into a casket. I think these drivers are proving they can't handle these speeds.

  • It was a driver's side hit. Fortunately it was about 2 feet back of the door area, so the hit would have been around the rear wheel. A direct T-bone straight in the door could have easily been fatal, I agree.

  • After that race, there are quite a few drivers that need to be banned from restrictor plate tracks, in ANY kind of car. It's one thing to be a rookie and learn how to race on these tracks...but it's a whole other thing to be a "veteran" and not slow down when the caution comes out and plow right into another car...that happened like three times.

  • Remember though, this kind of crash is always possible even in a Sprint Cup race.

  • This would be extremely rare in sprint cup. Sheltra was in the wall for almost 9 seconds, the caution light was on, there was no reason the car that hit him to be up high and going flat out. In Sprint cup competition that at best would be a suspension.

  • I cant believe that guys spotter wasn't screaming to him to go low when there was a car basicly parked high up on the wall. It was a stupid move, he was still flat out under yellow condition, and you know he saw the smoke.

  • The crash was horrible; but the reason the sound was so loud, they went to the audio of the incar camera. Glad they didnt go live to vid.

They said he was awake and alert; Hope your well soon Patrick!

  • Patrick is awake at the local hospital, I don't know his injuries, but he is alive, and conscious.

  • this was the worst arca race a have ever seen. even worse than in 2005 with two cars flipping on the last lap. there was a wreck about every ten laps, with atleast 7 cars in each of the first 3 wrecks. there was so much idiotic driving in this race, 2 or 3 people shouldnt be alowed to drive at daytona. i've heard for a long time that the ARCA cars had no brakes, but this was the first time I actually believed it.

  • first of all thank god sheltra is ok. thing about this race is that it is always a wreckfest. look up the 2005 wreck in this race. Billy Venturini was out for a few months due to a hit similar to this. I guess the kids have to start somewhere (although the guy who creamed Sheltra was no kid)....Be interesting to watch when they go to Talladega in April

  • Damn I hope he's okay. I have been a diehard racig fan for a very long time, but very few accidents make my stomach lurch into my throat like that one did! That was scary...nothing new for ARCA though. It's a total wreck fest every year because some guys just can't drive. Look at the accident at the mmiddle of the race, when one car was hit onto two wheels a good five seconds after the cars were stopped! I sure hope Patrick Sheltra is okay

  • Yeah, I remember watching Goody's Dash races at Charlotte in the 90's and there were always terrible crashes. The problem is that so many drivers that race in those series are really under experienced and they're expected to race in these super powerful stock cars.

  • Yup totally agree with ya. If they didn't have ARCA to get it out of there system they would just be doing it in the Truck series or Nationwide.

  • Exactly, they have to learn plate racing somewhere!

  • The lines getting blurry with guys who cant buy beer and smokes running cup.

  • That's not the point. Daytona/the cars isn't the issue. These guys should not be driving if they're going to use as much common sense as a normal walk-in at VLK.

  • who wins this race ? Thank god hes ok

  • Buescher #32

  • Nope, they didn't show replays because they feared for the worst.

  • The last fatality in an ARCA race at Daytona, BTW, was in 1990.

  • Any different play angles?

  • God..listen closly to those two cars hitting.. those aren't sound effects, holy crap.. that is scary

  • This was live, Speed did not show a replay because Sheltra had to be removed from the car and rushed to a local hospital.

  • that was one nasty hit. i cringed when i saw this crash during the race.

  • Nah.. he's a real man. he's ok lol

  • Wow. Hollenbeck is a maniac. This is nothing new for ARCA though. Almost every year in this race there are awful incidents that could've been avoided. I don't mean the original spin, but Hollenbeck continuing at fullspeed right into a cloud of smoke is inexcusable. I agree with others that these guys either should not be racing at Daytona or given considerably slower cars.

  • The old Dash series used to run at Daytona but tuned down to about 160-170 mph, that seems the most that beginners to plate racing should be going. That would take a smaller restrictor plate (something like 3/4").

  • Thats sure to get a hell of a lot of views on here. My god, that was a horrible impact. Btw (for history's sake) as of 7:19 pm, Feb 7, 2009, there has been no update on Patrick's condidtion
