The French person who sent me this series of photos got it from a French newspaper. The birds are swallows. At first, when the bird was still alive, the mate fed it! Then when it died the mate sat next to it and cried/peeped. Then it used its claws to try to lift it. So I believe the story of grief.

Ducks do this, example - When you see ducks fly in the V, if a duck at the front of the pack gets tired, he will fly to the end and let someone else take charge, if one gets shot down or hurt, 2 other ducks will stay with the duck until he has healed or the duck dies.
