Critical mass, as I'm not too familiar with it, I'm sure has a great purpose for displaying needed rights and infrastructure for cyclists but it seems to be that it's been mutated into a juvenile act of rebellion who's sole purpose is to just cause chaos and controversy. I supported CM till 1998 when the asshole elements took it over and started provocations. I ride my bike throughout San Francisco - in parts of San Francisco that most of these CM don't even know exists - and the asshole provocateurs of CM have simply caused persons to be pissed off at bicyclists in general and throw shit at me for simply riding my bike in San Francisco.

I was hit by one of these assholes, who hit me from behind and hurt me. What did i do? i picked up his bike and walked to a train trestle. i put the bike on one side of the pillar and walked to the other. i then bent the bike, double! I LEFT it like that!

In my country Denmark we have roads for bicyckles and in copenhagen i think there is about 150.000 people who driving to work and out to there city again when the day is over, i have never seen a car driver being agry on a a bicyckler.. Don't let your opinion of these douches colour your opinion of cyclists in general. Here in the Netherlands almost everyone owns both a car AND a bicycle (and we have a decent traffic safety record). Riding a bike doesn't mean you can't drive a car. Maybe because the US doesn't have a bike culture there is a lot of tension between cyclists and motorists, but it IS very much possible for the two to coexist. Just lay down some clear rules and everyone gets along.
@EnigmaDrath Problem is you have dipshit drivers and dipshit cyclists, both with an ownership mentality. Areas without heavy bicycle traffic tend to look down upon any cyclists trying to use the road, and it doesn't help that bicycle lanes are scarce in many US cities. Cyclists in turn will be obnoxious about making things difficult for drivers in these CM rallies including not obeying road signs.

Honestly, I watch these videos and think, "Yeah, no wonder people hate cyclists in the US." Here in the Netherlands cycling is as common as (if not more so than) driving, and everyone respects each other's rights on the road. Drivers respect cyclists and vice versa, and when one (unintentionally) bridges the other's rights the matter's usually settled peacefully. In the US, however, motorists and cyclists are at constant war over whose rights matter most. It's baffling to watch.

Actually, I'm quite well versed in the history of bikers, and it's not as you claim. 1st of all, the outlaw biker image in N.America was a media construct that became self fulfilling (see the Hollister riot 1947, as well as Hondas introduction to the American market with the Honda Cub)
To this day we fight that perception, the only thing that has brought us some legitimacy is our charity work and respected clubs such as the Goldwing owners club, clubs for police, firefighters, priests, etc.
So basically, the girl was working as a bike messenger when she went off the road. Whether it was caused by a motorist or a substance abuse problem is hard to say. She's basically saying that all other cyclists are middle or upper class, and as a working class person, she resents them. According to her, the only bikers on the road should be messengers. I'm a motorist and a cyclist too and also I live in Mexico City, a very mean and dangerous city for cyclists and also for motorists. I think that to obey the law and the traffic rules is not enough, we need to have our own criteria and common sense to live in harmony with each other.
The best thing we as cyclists can do is ride on the street (not the sidewalk), obey laws, be respectful and share the road. Above all we need to get out there and ride. These critical mass rallies do nothing but piss people off and do nothing for cycling.

Don't let your opinion of these douches colour your opinion of cyclists in general. Here in the Netherlands almost everyone owns both a car AND a bicycle (and we have a decent traffic safety record). Riding a bike doesn't mean you can't drive a car. Maybe because the US doesn't have a bike culture there is a lot of tension between cyclists and motorists, but it IS very much possible for the two to coexist. Just lay down some clear rules and everyone gets along.

Areas without heavy bicycle traffic tend to look down upon any cyclists trying to use the road, and it doesn't help that bicycle lanes are scarce in many US cities. Honestly, I watch these videos and think, "Yeah, no wonder people hate cyclists in the US." Here in the Netherlands cycling is as common as (if not more so than) driving, and everyone respects each other's rights on the road. Drivers respect cyclists and vice versa, and when one (unintentionally) bridges the other's rights the matter's usually settled peacefully. In the US, however, motorists and cyclists are at constant war over whose rights matter most. It's baffling to watch.

Actually, I'm quite well versed in the history of bikers, and it's not as you claim. 1st of all, the outlaw biker image in N.America was a media construct that became self fulfilling (see the Hollister riot 1947, as well as Hondas introduction to the American market with the Honda Cub)
To this day we fight that perception, the only thing that has brought us some legitimacy is our charity work and respected clubs such as the Goldwing owners club, clubs for police, firefighters, priests, etc.
