Same goes for wasting US$ 70 million on the Shenmue franchise while Sega of America persistently tried to ignore RPGs. Sega made big bucks with their coin-op machines and their consoles in the 80s and early 90s and they just burned through it due to their bad decisions. No money, no Dreamcast 2.
Oh yeah, forgot about how much money Sega lost on Shenmue. Well, even if though they're back on their feet, their partnership with Sammy isn't going to allow them to reenter the console race considering how much of a risk it is to create a gaming console. I read reports that it wasn't until during the release of the 360 that Microsoft finally earned back the money it invested in the original XBox.

And it sucks because Sega finally got it right. Our Dreamcast library was actually much larger than our Gamecube and Playstation 2 library. But yeah, I think Sega's in a better place now being able to create multiplatform games (although ever since Sonic has left Sega systems, it began to suck until last year). Plus can you imagine having a 4th console now in this market? Before there were only 2 strong consoles, now we're in the time where companies know what to do.
My sister played through it recently (although I had to constantly level her up so she wouldn't die so easily) but yeah, it's an amazing RPG and I'm actually surprised it didn't make the list. On metacritic it has a 90 and I was even more surprised that Skies only had a 75 because although I didn't play it (I just watched my bro play it a long time ago) it was one of those RPGs that gave you a TON of stuff to do, both interesting and rewarding.

SEGA really needs to go back to the Sonic Adventure gameplay and level design. They were among the best, most groundbreaking 3D platformers of the era. Even good recent Sonic games, like Generations, are nowhere near as cutting edge or nonlinear--and they rely on boosting and switching to 2D with great frequency. But given that they've lost virtually all of their internal talent, I don't expect them to make Sonic so relevant again.

I'm glad shenmue made it on this list . It's a game of patience but rewarding and completely original for its time. I enjoyed it and still replay it till this day. L.o.L lack of love is also a great one and should've made it on this list but it's so rare so they probably could'nt play it. Great list.

It never made much sense to me that this console was not a huge hit.
It was five years ahead of it's time with featuresl ike online connection. It chad according to some "the best ration of good games to bad games of any console in history". Plus it outsold in it's opening week.
All of these elements were in place for SEGA to make a huge comeback into consoles after the failure of the Saturn.
But instead they cut production shortly after it's launch and pulled out of consoles.

It never made much sense to me that this console was not a huge hit.
It was five years ahead of it's time with featuresl ike online connection. It chad according to some "the best ration of good games to bad games of any console in history". Plus it outsold in it's opening week.
All of these elements were in place for SEGA to make a huge comeback into consoles after the failure of the Saturn.
But instead they cut production shortly after it's launch and pulled out of consoles.
Madness.
