the wheel is a common symbol from many religions/cultures much more ancient than Christianity. to me, the wheel represents the Eight Pagan Virtues. in Buddhism, it represents the Eightfold Path (and that religion precedes Christianity by, oh...about 300-400 years). crosses are not the sole domain of Christ's followers, either. the cross in its many incarnations has always been a symbol of power. you put a cross in a circle, and it represents the Sun, usually. or a crossroads.

Besides, the cross symbol was used by the remote greeks (in their mythology it represented Orpheous crucified!), the minoans used it since3000, the mycenians, the egyptians (anky symbol), also the celts, all these cultures were B.C. Before Colombus arrived in AMERICA, the mayans and aztecs used it refering to the four sides of their world. The cross symbol is universal with no absolute meaning at all.
