I think a little piece of my soul may have died listening to this beautiful and flawless rendition of Vesti La Giubba. Perhaps that is why I still cannot stop my eyes from tearing up. Bravo, Sr. Domingo.
@MrBbminor Yes, he's spinto and he could sing Otello )). Domingo is a universal singer, because "spinto" is a universal tenor. He can sing a dramatic roles and a lyric. Not without reason in his repertoire more than 130 roles.
@MrBbminor A full dramatic? I think, this statement is not correct. And since the 90s his voice is the same old sixpence it used to be. Look at his repertoire at 90s and hear it. I don't remember that he sang like a dramatic only.
Pavarotti is a lyric tenor, Domingo is a spinto. And this role of Canio is not for lyric initially. Therewith their voices are too different, so compare their useless. For me Placido is the best, his voice is soft, solid, and hard, and flight. Pavarotti's voice too light, and too light for Canio.
after listening to both many times, i have to say i like domingos over pavarottis version. imo domingo puts much more emotion into this piece. both are great though
You know, I always have a fear of clowns. It's like, they have to be alchoholics or something, their lives seem so cheerful and happy, and they seem so innocent, but you know that they are just as flawed as every other human being. But clowns try to hide it, and that's what makes the entire opera so freaky and disturbing to me.
Everytime I hear Placido sing this I switch off from the "technical" aspects of the singing and just feel that real character, and emotion behind the eyes..That's pure theatre in my opinion. Brava!
@sirdavidrush1 I personally think Pavarotti has a better voice, but Plácido Domingo is also great, both versions of Vesti la Giubba almost (and I have to fight very hard for it not to happen to me) make me cry...
@sirdavidrush1 I like Pav a lot more. Not saying he's better, but there are songs he owns, and for me Pav does Nessun Dorma and Vesti la Giubba better than anybody, taking nothing away from Domingo, who does an amazing job at both of those as well.

I heard a joke once: Man goes to doctor. Says he's depressed. Says life is harsh and cruel. Says he feels all alone in a threatening world. Doctor says, "Treatment is simple. The great clown Pagliacci is in town tonight. Go see him. That should pick you up." Man bursts into tears. Says, "But doctor... I am Pagliacci." Good joke. Everybody laugh. Roll on snare drum. Curtains.
Just a quibble: the name should be Paglicco (singular: "Clown". "I Pagliacci" the title of the opera, means "the Clowns," plural. That's about all the Italian I know.
On the other hand, the joke would probably fall flat if you corrected it.
Yes, there's a great deal of realism. But then, the 'bad lady' is a stock character so common that portrayal can almost be stylized, and an artist has to elimate the appearance of insensibility from his performance.
i think this is better than the pavarotti's, no disrespect, I just like this performance a whole lot more, looks less like acting, more like the real thing.
i agree with you, vocally i think it may have to do with the fact that this role is for more of a dramatic tenor, which Domingo is, rather than a lyric tenor such as Pavarotti.
Domingo's acting will always surpass any other tenor. His singing is technically perfect. This is arguably his prime. It's not gonna get much better than this.
But Caruso's magic was the ability to be both completely invincible and completely vulnerable at the same time. And no art is gonna improve on that a whole lot, no matter how good it is.
Yeah, I have. I have about 9 different Corelli versions, a number of them on video, pretty much everything Corelli ever officially released and plenty he didn't (live bootlegs) including hours of interview. I'm one of the biggest Corelli fans on the planet, especially his (*and del Monaco's) lowered larynx technique.
And even CORELLI would tell you Caruso's unapproachable performances of I Pagliacci OWNED and DEFINED the role AND verismo opera singing as a whole.
I'm not disputing Caruso's approach as I am of the same opinion, I was referring more to the comment of Placido Domingo's acting surpassing that of any other tenor. Now it's not that I believe that Domingo's a bad actor, I'm just saying that is strictly your opinion. (Personally I believe Franco put a better performance, but again, that is opinion, not fact). Sorry for any confusion. Let's get back to enjoying the performance, shall we?
The greatness of the opera is that no role is "owned" by anyone, though there are those that may be defined by someone. Caruso will forever be identifed with "Pagliaccio," but up there with him is Placido's brilliant, powerful, heart-rending version. His acting, his voice, his passion are knee-buckling. This is dramatic tenor at its best. Bravo, Placido.
I am very impressed with this version, and love Domingo's voice. Still, whenever I think of this aria, my favorite version is the one he did in the 3 Tenors Concert in 1994. No props or make-up, yet he still managed to convey so much emotion - both vocally and with his facial expressions, ( Not the most difficult piece he sang that evening, but one DOES need a strong voice in the lower range to do it properly) Bravo Domingo!
It isa difficult aria to sing and any tenor like sing to show how beautiful can be his voice. But Mr. Domingo is so good that it seem an easy thing to do.
Brfavo, Placido. I am not his biggest fan in the lighter, more lyric roles, but in the weighty dramatic and heroic tenor arias, he is magnificent. That natural basso profundo adds such depth and emotion to it, and Placido has always been a strong, convincing actor, as good as any in this role. The pain in his voice would bring any audience to tears. A great, great Canio.
i dont know , and i dont care if Mr. Placido Domingo isnt the best , the thing is that this is awesome , i dont care if other tenors do a better performance. im just love this video.
You guys ever seen and heard the "Vesti...", by Del Monaco in that performance in Japan in 1952 ? THAT was an absolute real Pagliaccio. He was the emperor of dramatic tenors !!
As I continue to fall in love with this entire Opera song, I become picky of this peticular segment because no one rolls the r, especially the last one
IL COR
dissapointing even... but thats if you really get opinionated, I still enjoy listening to this as much as everyone who posted underneath & above me.
I love Pavarotti but Domingo owns this role. At the same time even-though Domingo does a marvelous Mario Cavaradossi in Tosca I feel that Pavarotti owns that role. In my book for the most part they are both equally amazing and they each had their own roles. Pagliacci hands down IS Domingo's!
2.06 - 2.25 I think, is what inspired Freddie Mercury to write the intro to 'Its a Hard Life' This is the first time I'd actually listened to compare the pieces and the are almost identical in sound! See what you think ^^
i love this song, eventhough i have no clue what it is about or means, would someone like to tell me please? i got hooked on to this song by watching "the untouchables" as a kid and that scene where the clown is singing ib the opera house, id watch it over, and over again eventhough clowns scare the living bejesus out of me (no lie)
He's been cheated by his wife and is heartbroken. The name "Vesti la guibba" means "put on the costume" and refers to the fact that he's an entertainer and needs to put on a show, although his heart is breaking. He needs to laugh and make fun of his sorrow - make the crowd happy while his life is falling apart.
Brava. Brava ragazzi. I think thats how you say it in italian but this is fantastic

malamutet 1 year ago
INCREDIBILE!
bodiloto 1 year ago

bodiloto 1 year ago

Domingo's acting will always surpass any other tenor. His singing is technically perfect. This is arguably his prime. It's not gonna get much better than this.
But Caruso's magic was the ability to be both completely invincible and completely vulnerable at the same time. And no art is gonna improve on that a whole lot, no matter how good it is.

Really, have you ever seen Franco Corelli's version?
Xpac555 2 years ago
Yeah, I have. I have about 9 different Corelli versions, a number of them on video, pretty much everything Corelli ever officially released and plenty he didn't (live bootlegs) including hours of interview. I'm one of the biggest Corelli fans on the planet, especially his (*and del Monaco's) lowered larynx technique.
And even CORELLI would tell you Caruso's unapproachable performances of I Pagliacci OWNED and DEFINED the role AND verismo opera singing as a whole.
Questions?
esroberto1 2 years ago
I'm not disputing Caruso's approach as I am of the same opinion, I was referring more to the comment of Placido Domingo's acting surpassing that of any other tenor. Now it's not that I believe that Domingo's a bad actor, I'm just saying that is strictly your opinion. (Personally I believe Franco put a better performance, but again, that is opinion, not fact). Sorry for any confusion. Let's get back to enjoying the performance, shall we?

brings me to tears every time. how magnificent to be able to conjure such emotions with a voice. my heart breaks for pagliaccio

This has got to be one of the most heartbreaking scenes in opera. It never fails to make me cry when I hear it.

I am very impressed with this version, and love Domingo's voice. Still, whenever I think of this aria, my favorite version is the one he did in the 3 Tenors Concert in 1994. No props or make-up, yet he still managed to convey so much emotion - both vocally and with his facial expressions, ( Not the most difficult piece he sang that evening, but one DOES need a strong voice in the lower range to do it properly) Bravo Domingo!

i am not an expert on this stuff i just love the music but is this a difficult song to sing or would most people find it easy.. just asking
SHUTUP0023451 2 years ago
It isa difficult aria to sing and any tenor like sing to show how beautiful can be his voice. But Mr. Domingo is so good that it seem an easy thing to do.

This guy's good. But I like Pavarotti better.

@rodikgork

rayschalch 1 year ago

i dont know , and i dont care if Mr.

Lanza = Thumbs up

He's been cheated by his wife and is heartbroken. The name "Vesti la guibba" means "put on the costume" and refers to the fact that he's an entertainer and needs to put on a show, although his heart is breaking. He needs to laugh and make fun of his sorrow - make the crowd happy while his life is falling apart.

thank you for that it really is a brilliant song

Agree that the playback quality is not great. His class shines through though. You believe he is heartbroken and is in agony. Damn fine stuff.
