  • That last comment was me

  • Yes, 9!! I keep up on my engine maintenance and everything! I could have miscalculated it though. I'm not sure how much of a difference it makes but I have a bass system that weighs about 120-130 pounds.

  • why in America we don't have the diesel engines??? i'm so fucking tired of big motors,.,,in america ONLY big motors

  • I've got a 93 with 86k original miles... live in new england and she's rotting out but she still runs strong!

  • @NaTeiiSBeaST I just bought a '93 with 258k miles and it does have its flaws (front and back wipers) but it runs like no other :)

  • 20mpg? Psh!!! I WISH!!!!! lol mine is more like 9mpg :'(

  • @BassPlayersWild 9mpg ?? maybe its time for a tuneup... my 98 grand cherokee with the same engine gets about 16mpg city and 21 highway

  • The funny thing is the average highway MPG of the Jeep Cherokee 4.0L in 1992 was 21mpg. Does anyone else find it funny that this is the standard for any V6 today? AMC was way ahead of the curve when they designed this engine, and Chrysler was one step ahead when they bought them out.

  • @Magnuspire

Well thats true, but the reason Chrysler dropped this engine for thier V6's early on was because the Inline 6 put off a ton of carbon emissions and couldnt meet the new standards in the united states. That and it was pretty much maxed out as a factory engine for HP and torque in the WJ's.

Its the same thing for the Magnum engines, the 5.2 and 5.9, the new Hemi engine's dont get any better gas mileage, but they do put off a lot less carbon emissions

  • lmaooo @ 1:05 "BOWN! IN THE U-S-EHHH!" lmao

  • I don't know if it's just me, but I love that steering wheel. Its not like those new bulky wheels with airbag. It looks more like a truck.

  • Nice video. My Cherokee is a 1998, superb car to drive. Lot of fun

  • I'm glad that me and my dad still drive Cherokee, it goes anywhere where the wheel goes.

  • This is my favourite look for the Jeep Cherokee, kind of dated, but if it works. I'd particularly like a Right-Hand Drive model.

  • I have a 1996 Cherokee Sport 2 Door It is the best vehicle I have ever owned! I will never sell it. I give the Jeep Cherokee with the four liter engine 10 Stars!!!

  • lived in the mid-east and very hot! toy's are ok not the safest rig eather!! land rovers over priced and over-heat!! just the good ol Jeep-Cherokee that keep's on going and going...even with the air-con on all the time!!! very reliable and cheap to own.

I'm not an american but love my Jeep....

  • Now that's a great video.

  • that you have certain knowledge that your not gonna break down

  • I loved my 1996 Jeep Cherokee Classic, it had the best driving postion, and was a real pleasure to drive. I miss it a lot, and wish I kept it.

  • I love Cherokees good power from the straight six and I have never been stuck in mine and also they all need a lift kit

  • Cherokees arnt built to last at all. Your thinking about wranglers. Iv heard nothing but bad about Cherokees

  • @saymikehawkfast. What the hell are you talking about, The Jeep Cherokee Has Been Proven to Reach 400 thousand Milles. Jeep Cherokees Are Very Reliable Just like Every Other Jeep.

  • @WedidLandONtheMOON they have almost the worst rating where i live

  • @saymikehawkfast

Whaaaaaat? I bought a Cherokee with 150k and the only thing I've had to replace was a sway bar link an O2 sensor.

  • @tainterlakeisgreen ya iv been having mixed oppinions from people

  • "I like the fact that it doesn't handle like a paddle-steamer"

What the hell is a paddle-steamer?

  • Why drive anything BUT a cherokee. They are simply the best.

  • Having a Cherokee in Hokkaido RHD is one of the best suv 4x4 we have own. With high KMH and Japan's strict tag law's this thing strong and going clean... very good American truck one of the best thing's from the USA...buy far !,....well built like "camp" Jeeps...lol..luv it

  • i cried...this was so moving...."these thing are built....well its built like jeeps"

  • i have a 95 with a 4.5 in lift k&n intake straight headers and cherry bomb exhaust i get about 11 mpg but i do have 33 in mud tires also

  • i bet nobody has a jeep cherokee briarwood :D

  • Actually I get about 16 - 18 in my 89 4.0 sport

  • @AllamoFox . 15 for me with my 98. Mostly city drive.

  • Why did he say "20 MPG" when he's in England?

  • @SunsetSupermanRMB What's your point? We use miles and gallons in the UK, we're not like the rest of Europe. Only think I can see wrong is that I can't get 20 MPG in mine, it's more like 13 MPG :-)

  • it is so weird seeing the steering wheel on the other side and that interior is the same as mine way weird..lol..but it is an awesome vehicle!!! i love my jeep cherokee

  • When I visited England a few years ago, I saw some Jeep Cherokees driving around Plymouth. I didn't get a close up view of the jeep, but I know a Jeep Cherokee when I see one, having seen plenty at home in the USA. At first, I thought "now that's weird. I've never seen a Jeep in the UK before, let alone a Right-Hand Drive one." Perhaps the next time I'm able to visit England, I'll be able to take a closer look.

  • @Seattlecarnut My mailman has a Right Hand Drive Cherokee. They were offered in the U.S.A. for rural mail carriers.

  • nice, top gear hates american cars. good show, not being biased.

  • The actuals go back to the 40's Cherokees on the other hand like the 70's then in like 85 86 made this style cherokee. I have me a white one. and idk what you're talking about breaking down. Maintenance goes a long long way.

  • jeeps never break down?? yea he has never owned a jeep, my jeep has broken down on me many many times. everyone i know that has a jeep has trouble with it. but i love jeeps so i fix it n go on... its a jeep thing...haha

  • @xjpioneer4x4

sorry but maybe you guys dont know what your doing they are solid never seen a problem outside of people being dumb

  • The jeep cherokee was killed my chrysler in 2001. Its still being made in China as the Beijing Jeep 2500.

The Liberty (Cherokee in Europe) is no where near as capable or reliable.

Ive got a Cherokee in the 2000 flavor, on 35 inch tires and an 8 inch lift. 152k miles and I still get upwards of 17MPG with the 5.13 gear ratio!

  • I've always loved the Jeep Cherokee, I've never seen a Right-Hand Drive Jeep Cherokee. I love its looks. I'd prefer to have a Jeep Cherokee than either a Land Rover or a Toyota 4 Runner (Hilux Surf). I love its 4 litre engine. I'd put a diesel engine under the hood, though for better fuel economy.

  • @Seattlecarnut My dad got one, 4.0 Limited If you'd like to see Cherokee XJ in RHD, there are many XJs in Thai.

My dad and I took XJ out in the wild with just all stock, never winched if unnecessary. It never breakdown if you take care of it properly. Currently it clocked 300k Kilometres.

  • 250k miles and still runs like A CHAMP

  • Jeep has been around since at least the 70s.......LOL.

  • to je top gear??která serie??

  • I have a 91 w2 door with 125000 runs great beater and cheaper than my 95 yj was

  • "i love the fact that its not japanese" LOL

  • Comment removed

  • jap cars are generic

  • the fact that its rare, isnt japanese

and doesnt handle like a paddle steamer LMFAO

  • YEAH XJ!

  • i have 218, 000 miles on my '94 ZJ 5.2!

    O IIIIII O

  • Being an American, it was pretty funny watching this. I'm not dissing on anyone, it was just comical seeing a Brit actually liking something American.

  • @nasonguy I can see exactly what youre saying. Not trying to be disrespectful, its just something I think only an American would understand ya know? haha

  • It's all good man, I didn't take it as disrespect, and I didn't mean any with my comment. It just seems theres always this friendly (sometimes, not so friendly) rivalry between Americans and Brits, so I found it comical to see a British guy praising an American vehicle so much. They guys on Top Gear would never do that, haha.

  • @nasonguy

Im British, and buy American.... :)

  • Haha, nice. If it helps, my jeep was made in, sold, driven in for 100k miles, and purchased used from Canada, haha.

  • hey, a Jeep's a Jeep :)

  • @nasonguy lol, they should. we saved their asses in wwii

  • @nasonguy lol mate, i am a brit i love/adore american girls esp their teeth when they apply them gently around something. yankee chicks rock. you might of beat us in revolutionary wars, but we still pilfer your women lol. on another note i have a jeep very well made car not as good as landrover disco offroad, but better made and nicer to drive. wish we had your gas prices though.

  • @sexybritgent Haha, thief!

My jeep has outlived 3 of my 4 cars, I like it. I would have got a Disco, but they're so expensive, and I don't think it'll get 35mpg on the highway. My 4.0liter jeep will though, and it only cost me $2k.

I don't care about gas prices, I drive a motorcycle (dual sport) every day, I get 60mpg all day long.

  • @nasonguy

Your 4 liter will get 35mpg ? Or last you ? I know it wont get 35mpg thats for sure..

  • @nasonguy well everywhere around the world....people with level minds like anything that works, and just so happens the Cherokee for whatever reason works!

  • @92XJlaredo Hey that would be a good slogan: Jeep, it works.

  • @nasonguy It works

    cuz its a jeep

  • @nasonguy

Jeep was only built really good when AMC owned the name.. The cherokee's early wranglers, and the last of the line ZJ Grand Cherokee's were the only ones built really well... Once Chrysler bought them out and started making them in 99 the quality went down a lot.

  • @1ownjoo2 I agree whole heartedly.

I used to also own a couple Saturns, they were the same way, good thoroughbred vehicles with well thought out, hollistic designes. That is, until GM stuck their nose in stuff and started mucking things up. I love my '98 Jeep Cherokee, and my '97 Saturn SC2. Good American vehicles.

  • @nasonguy

Yea of course Chysler bought Jeep when AMC was getting ready to make the ZJ in 92. So tech the ZJ's are chrysler vehicles, but they were made from AMC materials and designs thats why they were so good. The 99 and up tho is all Chrysler and i hear nothing but expensive repairs on those vehicles.

Same with the Saturn thing, the last 10 or so years Saturn has been really crappy, known for problems its one reason IMO they got rid of it not just because of the econemy

  • I used to drive a '90 Jeep Cherokee Limited. It was a small problem child, but man was it great in the winter :)

  • these are the original suv jeep 4x4er's and the best! had one for 5years in saudi arabia put 200K miles on it in the saudi heat! with no problem, a/c every thing worked! fine rig, then hav 2001 in uk, and again no prob, with now 250K miles just tires brakes and fluids, best 4x4 by far!!

  • My 93 Cherokee country has 285,000K and runs like a top... I keep it in immaculate condition and the thing looks brand new... Very happy with this vehicle.. That guy in the video must be awful smart ;)

  • my grand dad still has an 1988. Still runs fine with way over 100k on it.. His is a base model though, no leather or fancy things. Plastic seats and no wood plastic on the dash board.

  • Sounds like, mine, except I have a Sport. Love the 4.0L Engine, Only thing that went wrong with it was the door hinge broke off, but $12.50 later it was welded back on.

  • well the spare isnt under so there is better ground clearence when going over rock or a steep drop off

  • Exactly right.

  • what's the song in the end?

  • Petshop Boys-Go West

  • F*ing damnit, why does his automatic have a tachometer and my manual doesn't?

  • don't you just hate that!... it seems like thats true on a lot of vehicle.

  • mostly the on old cars though

  • ya well, it still sucks ;-)

  • It's funny you say that but guess what? I got good news for you my friend. Well, I don't think it's much help anyways but cherokees with manual transmissions have a shift indicator light to let you know when to shift. It's located in the "info. Panel" next to the gauges. It's an arrow pointing up.

  • yeah, i saw the shift indicator, but mine is completely out of whack and blinks on and off even when I just shifted and all the way through the gear -.-

  • because your is an SE, aka the budget XJ. He has a limited, the high end XJ.

  • my auto doesn't have a tach, instead it has a big ass fuel guage!

  • I got my license a few months ago. My parents have pretty much given me their '96 4.0 Liter in line 6 Cherokee Sport. They don't like it. I love the thing, although I still like to drive my dad's 5 speed miata na when I can.

  • I'v got the 1996 country edition 4.0 litre in line 6 engine with over 400,000 km on it and it runs like a champ just gotta do more exhaust work this year cause the manifold has a hole where its leaking

  • Im going to be buying a 99 Cherokee Sport, the only problem i can fin with it is the fact that i have to push the brake pedle close to 3/4th of the way down to get any response from the brakes, would anyone know any problems that might be causing this? and its got new brakes and has been bleed twice

  • That's just the brakes, you will probably need new pads, I would get new rotors as well. It sounds like they are worn.

  • Thanks but the problem was sorted out, its now in my drive way lol ive got it as my background for my channel, its sunburst orange, i really love the thing, they should bring it back in all honesty

  • i have a jeep exactly like this one 1991 4.0 litre just comming up to 300,000 k. doors are a bit rusted and needs suspension in the back but a great vehicle and the 4wheel drive works awsome.i little bit to fix then its off the bush...woo hoo

  • well seeing as how everyones leaving thier signature so to speak by saying what they have... i got a 94 cherokee 4.0 with 182,000K and still runs strong. everything on it works exept AC (it's either the condenser or leaking somewhere else... I blame it on my dad>:I ) and the driver's side front fork broke(again... my father) and before i got my hands on it he used 10W-40 on it, not good. now i'm just using high milege 10W-30 with engine restore(highly recomemded) KandN oil filter

  • I got a 98 Cherokee almost identical to this one but with more updated interior. It's an awesome tool. It's fast, has really good on road driving manners, is exceptional offroad, the engine is super smooth and has bags of torque, transmission is equally as smooth. Very good spec, full leather and elec pack. It's an absolute joy to drive and the 4wd has got me out of the sh*t a few times this winter. The best 4x4xfar!

  • Jeep Cherokee is awesome alright. I got my mom's old one, just broke 350,000 miles on it. I swapped the engine because it had low compression, but it still ran fine.

  • Cant beat an XJ baby.

  • 91 cherokee limited around 230,000 km. Runs great and i love it, Only things ive had to replace in the time i owned it are the tires and the transfer case seals(tires where like 8 year old wal-mart brands). 31/10.5/15 kumho's on it now. And ya the gas millage kind of sucks...

  • i got a '96 that is about to hit 180xxx, runs like a champ, never let me down. BTW it whoped the sh*t out of a mazda, Yea 4.0 HO I6

  • heck yea I have a 91 Wrangler 4.0l with 190K- 'grunty' is very underrated

  • hellz yeah, did you know if you take the cylinder heads of the H.O. 4.0 and put them on the 258, you get 50+ Hp, or so I have heard.

  • I don't think it is 50 hp, more like 30 or so. God I love my Jeep

  • But still, it is hella cool. I will never sell mine, i would rather let it rust to the ground, if it could.

  • thats not a 97 its older

  • Yeah, the lack of airbag in the steering wheel.

  • the front end is different too

  • my dad had a 01 cherokee 4.0 with 27k miles on it and i know its no ferrari but has more power than we expected now it has 120k and nothing has gone wrong all that has been replaced is oil and tires it has never broken down and drives like new basicly

  • i just got a red 92 cherokee and i heart it very much it has 235 000 miles she is my girl

it had a shit load of wiring problems but my dad fixed them all

  • i bought a jeep for $300 with 225.000 miles on it and drove it for a year wrecked it and kept the motor trans and rear

  • I had a 2000 black Cherokee sport. It looked way different than that, and the inside was much, much nicer. I loved my Jeep so much. The horsepower and torque sucked you into the seat and the 4x4 was amazing. I went to work one day and snow was touching the bottom of the undercarriage and I did not have one problem!!!

  • i got a red 2000 cherokee sport, i love it!

  • i own two a 93 that i have like 200k on and my 01 *last year made* with almost 90k my 93 is worn out beet up and is every year from 84-96 miss matched parts and been wrecked 3 time but still runs drives and has new tires my 01 is stock from the factory and is great both 4 door white, 2x4 and have the same option on each. i love my jeeps even the same style of wheels.... i love my jeeps

  • mine are almost 400k.. runs ok , but need to replace some of its part though. All worn out.

  • jesus 400000 miles on o.m. parts? thats crazy, good for you man thats truely a spectacular vehicle

  • long distance job...figure. overhoul the engine once...and i think its high time to replace the engine with a new one.

  • id say lol

  • yeah the cherokee will last you a long time if you take care of it

  • I bought my 1991 Laredo not to long ago. It only has 75k miles on it and I love it :) hopefully it lasts me many years.

  • Well done old boy! Well done!

  • I FEEL LIKE CRYEN

  • my 95 cherokee got 280k miles still runs great

  • It doesnt break down till 150k miles then its all downhill

  • I can argue with that point. My Comanche has the same engine and transmission as this Cherokee, mine has 245,000 miles on it and still runs like a brand new truck. My Cherokee has 179,000 miles on her and still goes strong.

  • yeah my 1990 cherokee has 210,000 and still runs like brand new.

  • same here (well, 180k but thats close enough; its still over 150k).

  • mines running strong at 180,000 miles. 4.0 I6 2000 Cherokee.

  • I'm surprised to see such a review on Top Gear! But the announcer was right, the XJ Jeeps are the best!

  • I have the same 4.0 I-6 engine..But mine's in an 04' Grand Cherokee(actually 5 more hp). I hope I can expect the same longevity that the Cherokee's had.

  • Hell yeah! the XJ is one of the best! Jeep went all wrong when the dropped the build of such a solid machine! I still love them though!

  • My 1998 4.0 liter has 340k on her!! runs like it did when my father gave it to me with 156k!! NOBODY makes an engine like that anymore.

  • all good except for the dana 35 rear....

  • some have the chrysler 8.25 which is stronger than the 35. if you have the 8.25 with 29 splines its almost as strong as a dana 44

  • Nice to see a presenter on Top Gear not arrogantly bash an American-made car for once. And the fact that it is the Cherokee (My car of choice) this guy is giving positive marks to makes this clip only better.

  • jeeps are so freakin awsome i like how they played bruce when they showed the jeep american all the way hell ya

  • I had 250,000 on my cherokee until it was totlaed. The only thing I had to replace for the 50,000 I had it was an alternator.

  • Have a 1987 Pioneer Cherokee with the D44 in the rear with 128K on it 5 speed 4x4 and it has been beaten the CRAP out of and still put about $450 into it completely and it is ready for almost anything :) Ready for another 200k miles or more!

  • I just got a 2000 cherokee sport with 100,000 miles. My 1st car to learn with. Had it for about 6 months and had only a little bit of trouble with an anti freeze leak. Now im good and have no other trouble. Im told that these motors with giv me an easy 250,000 thousand miles. I figured drive it till it dies. then get myself an 06 wrangler cuz i hate the the 07's and up.

  • I have a 1998 cherokee, the best jeep I've had. just hit 157k, original engine/trans

  • I own a 1999 Jeep Cherokee Classic

    64,000 miles

    never been in the shop

    EVER!

If the energizer bunny was a car it would be the Jeep Cherokee.

  • any car can make it 100k....its after that makes the difference

  • My DAD'S has 172,000 miles on his Cherokee Sport just last week. It was only in the shop twice and that was for the accident and when very large bird broke the windshild.

  • Nice car, mine is 92 HO. I drove it with 180 km/h on german autobahn, not so funny...

  • I have a 97 sport 4.0 fucking badass truck, thing blows little civics away on the street with that engine, can offroad the hell out of it, fucking thing is all steel no stupid plastic bumpers with foam in them, and the thing lasts, i have 140000 miles on this bitch and its finally getting a little screwy with the tranny but thats an easy fixing for a mechanic

  • damn straight jeep cherokee!

  • 145 on my 98 xj sport i love it

  • I love my '99 Jeep Cherokee. Most reliable vehicle ever. Jeeps can take a ton of punishment on and of road and still stay strong.

  • "Better built than a Range Rover" I can't believe I heard those words coming from a British mouth lol. That says a lot.

  • Have you ever looked at some older Range Rovers? I mean the ones from the 80`s. Good lord, they`re terribly built.

  • Is there anyway I could get this video?

  • i own a 2001 sport , its fucking awsome

  • That is not a 97, but rather a 91. Cool video!

  • The jeep is the european model. i realize it is not the spec of the 97 cherokee however they had only begun importing the cherokees to europe a few years before this episode of topgear was recorded which was in 1997. and im sorry i dont know the name of the song. However i love jeeps.

  • Ilove Jeeps to

  • Hey pls can some body tell me whats the name of song on end of movie this one who start when he start the engine??? pls

  • "Go West" - Pet Shop Boys

  • ghbbb123 1000x thx i search her from ~10 years some where ^ ^ thx

  • you're welcome =) glad I could help

  • I love it!!. my dad use to have a 87 jeep cherokee pioneer. I personally love the steering wheel and the dash board. of the 1984-1996 models. I want one of the Cherokee Briarwoods mmm fake wood paneling lol

  • first of all that is not a 97 jeep cherokee, in 97 they made major reformations.. such as changing the interior and rear driveshaft as well as the exterior body, that looks to ba about a 91-93. it has the same interior as my 91, which i have 31" tires on a 3" lift, and i only managed to get it stuck once so far (on purpose) they are the most durable mid sized SUV you can buy.

  • hey how does a 1992 jeep laredo with 130k (mint) for 600 bucks sound, cause thats my first car, and my moms bf has connections with dealers so yea... its origonally in that condition worth $ 3,000 $ and im getting it for $2,400 cheaper. :)

  • damn right O!!!O

  • XJ Cherokee has been around since 1984 - 2001. The design is so good that it is currently being produced in China almost unaltered except for some cosmetics on the front. I just bought myself a 98 XJ - the possibilities are endless.

  • in 1997 the jeep was out way langer than 4.5 years

  • That is a good video, just love my 98XJ, 154k still going strong

  • great video. great suv
