@thesmashfloydian depends from where you come from. not always the case but most of the time americans call it sodder and evryone else calls it sol-der.
@shield400 In the US, solder is pronounced "sodd-er". In the UK it's pronounced "sow-der". In Australia it's commonly pronounced "sold-er". No one is wrong, we just have different ways of saying things.
@shield400 You can pronounce Solder anyway you want, the L in solder is silent, just like the H in herb, so you can either pronounce it Saw-Durr or sole-der, in the UK its pronounced Sole-der in the US and anywher else in the world its pronounced Saw-durr.
@shield400 "sodder" is the correct pronunciation, you really should look stuff like that up before you make a post. Subtle is spelled like "sub-tel", but you pronounce it "suddle". Get your facts straight
@TejbzYunior Both pronunciations are correct. It all depends on where in the world your from. Maybe you should follow your own advice about getting "facts straight".
@shield400 Hi Shield, the word 'solder' comes from Middle English 'soudur' from Old French 'soudure' or 'soldure', from even earlier 'soulder', from Latin 'solidare' ("to make solid"). Language is always in flux (pun intended.) But it has been pronounced without the "L" for quite some time now.
Not sure about there, but in America the "L" in "solder" is silent, same with "walk", "talk", and "Alabama"... If any American was to pronounce that "L", they would be looked at by other Americans as if they had a speech impediment. It's nonsensical, but the English Language is not an exact science.
Stop saying this guy is grumpy, he's concise. I wish everything informative was voiced by him.
I completely agree with you about the grumpy part. I would have loved to have all of my teachers as concise as that guy. No ums, ahhs, just the facts.
The National Electrical Code (NFPA70) prohibits use of solder on electrical connections; the reason is because under an overload, the solder will melt, and you'll have a live wire flying around & may cause a fire. Just remember that if you're thinking of soldering anything that may handle any type of load. Signaling is fine, though. If you're repairing a wire bigger than 18 gauge, I'd say dont. It's taht small because there probably isnt much of a load on it
@CalicoatMaker I'm sure all electronics in the world will now obey this law.
I'm pretty sure the electrical connection you're talking about are with Houses. Also, I think it's hilarious that the "solder will melt." Melt on what? The wire? Heat is generated by the application using the current, the amount of heat across a wire would be minuscule in something the size he is soldering.
you know what, everyone is calling this guy a jerk but after youtubing over 10+ video's I finally came across this video, and it was all I needed. It was clear, informative, and concise. That's all I asked for, and I think this is a great video.

ya this demo is shit,he doesnt xplain what is tinting, which i just learned from another demo.what he should have said was...when soldering, heat the surface u wish to solder then apply the solder to the heated joint or surface an let the solder flow onto the surface.
it took him almost exactly 53 seconds to twist the wire and solder it. excluding the time he was ordering you what type of solder to use. that video was a waste of popular mechanics money. they suck anyways.
How quaint, I happen to know that the correct way to say "Stupid" is "St-U-Pid" ( pronounce the "U" as "U" not the "uh" )but most people in america pronounce it "Stoo-pid. So therefore, is everyone who pronounces it like the latter handicapped? fucking no you ignorant prick. In other cultures that yours people pronounce things differently. and im not saying this because your america before people thumb me down, but because you're an idiot.
heh..i agree whole heartedly with you my friend..its true that pronunciations differ from place to place and therefore people to people...but the thing is there is no standard pronounciation technique for almost all the words in the English dictionary...as it is said " theres being right..and theres being polite" ...as we have pretty much freaking disposed of the politeness part and the freedom of speech right allows us to say pretty much anything..i suppose its okay .this comment was pointles

What is the tool called that holds the wire in place?
ElDelPheguo 2 years ago
ya this demo is shit,he doesnt xplain what is tinting, which i just learned from another demo.what he should have said was...when soldering, heat the surface u wish to solder then apply the solder to the heated joint or surface an let the solder flow onto the surface.
bonghits4breakfast 2 years ago
I thought it was helpful. It was straight to the point...and he did say what u said he should of said
TedBoxhead 2 years ago
it took him almost exactly 53 seconds to twist the wire and solder it. excluding the time he was ordering you what type of solder to use. that video was a waste of popular mechanics money. they suck anyways.

In other cultures that yours people pronounce things differently. and im not saying this because your america before people thumb me down, but because you're an idiot.
poponimpact 2 years ago
heh..i agree whole heartedly with you my friend..its true that pronunciations differ from place to place and therefore people to people...but the thing is there is no standard pronounciation technique for almost all the words in the English dictionary...as it is said " theres being right..and theres being polite" ...as we have pretty much freaking disposed of the politeness part and the freedom of speech right allows us to say pretty much anything..i suppose its okay .this comment was pointles
