I read that in some Russian models including the TU154 engaging reverse before touch down results in a near perfect landing. This handling feature was discovered accidentally, but was universally adopted afterwards.

It's not actualy reversing prior to touchdown, but turns engine ti "idle". This helps only in activating reversing much more quickly!!
