make sure whatever pockets you put your memory cards in are not natural materials. lots of static can build up. get a second strap for your camera. the one on your hand is fine until it gets knocked out. best to have it also strapped to your shoulder or elbow. no longer than you need. too long and more chance of it hitting the floor.. favour low-exposure over everything. the faster the better. in low light of course make sacrifices. try to have best action over colour/brightness accuracy.

i have a 720p HD camera on my phone, this is my primary means of filming the police, but usually you have about an hour of recording time, but with $15 bucks on amazon, you can carry two extra batteries and 32gb spare memory in a single compartment of your average male's wallet

Please keep in mind that in some states (in IL for sure) it is a felony to record audio without consent of the recorded party (conveniently the police are exempt from this law and can film you without your consent). If you film the cops you can be arrested, charged and potentially go to prison for 15 years. It's absurd but that's the way things are in the states with full consent. I think it applies only to audio. Consult your local statute on the matter.

What is a good video camera to buy? It looked as if the guy telling the police it was not ok to yell at the press had an external 'shotgun' microphone. That doesn't connect to a handycam as far as I know...

Carry lots of batteries, and several spare memory cards (unless you're livestreaming, of course). Make sure you have a sturdy camera that you're comfortable running with, and that's light enough that you can hold it up for an hour or more. When you swap out your memory cards, don't put them in a camera case. Put them in a secure pocket, preferably a hidden one, or a case labeled "empties" -- this will reduce the risk that they will be "lost" if you're arrested.

This is awesome. I would add RECHARGE Batteries, and you. Making sure the camera people get food, water and rest are things I would recommend as well. It's hard to predict the exact situation, but if you are overly tired, your equipment is running out of power, and you're not getting enough food and water you can not properly film things when they happen. If you have enough people using their cameras and cell phone cameras to film what is going on, you have the ability to walk away and RECHARGE

I'm a chess-player, here are some ideas:

The art of concealment: If you team up, try to make sure they cannot make out that you belong to the same group.

The art of deception: Pretend that you're filming with the camera turned off, so they don't know how much battery power you have left. Or, conceal you have one.

The art of deflection: Pass your cameras and footage around to people you can trust, discreetly. They are watching, so try to feed them as many false information as possible.
