The roommate has just been told that her friend has been murdered, and she immediately walks away from the detective. They do that a lot in both Christie series.
@JonFrumTheFirst The roommate already knew that her friend was dead. She was hanging up the pictures. I am sure that the idea she could have been murdered would have already occured to her, so why would she stand still like an idiot?
Poirot lived in the city and he enjoyed the style of 'art deco'. Even the building he lives in is the art deco archetecture. Miss Marple was more of a country lady, with her knitting, her vicarage, and her tea and scones.
@MajorBigglesworth1 -- as mentioned by "Minty210", the name of the song is "Hindustan" (1918). The lyrics are available here: w w w(dot)sheetmusicbackinprint(dot)com(slash)popular(slash)hindustan(dot)html
@calihartley2010 I think @summersunt has a point. They had different standards in the 40's. The singer was probably considered as classy and talented back then as Rihanna is today.
Gah! The "nightclub"... When it comes to racist stereotypes and ludicrous orientalism, hard to beat the early 20th century.
Sadly, we haven't really come very far.

@5429322 Somehow I think she looks better then you do.

have you noticed how in the Poirot series the houses and furnitures are very modern, while in Miss Marple's they are very classical and traditional.
I guess, it's a link between the personalities and tastes of Poirot and Marple

@Genevieve1023 People who consider Rihanna classy have a trashy standard. That tells you how standards have declined.

@calihartley2010 Yes, that was all three of our points.
